The Royal British Legion poppy appeal 2012

This year Remembrance Day falls on Sunday 11th November. The annual poppy appeal house-to-house collection takes place during the period running up to that day, during which time authorised collectors who are well known to most of you will be calling. Last year the Appeal raised more than £1200 in Cassington and Worton. May I, on behalf of the Royal British Legion, thank all of you who so generously supported the appeal last year and may we continue to rely on your generosity again this year. Today it is very much in the public mind that our forces continue to suffer casualties, resulting in the Legion being increasingly called upon to give support to them and bereaved families. Costs to do this are continually escalating. The Royal British Legion does not advocate war or glorify it, but attempts to relieve the suffering caused by it. Sunday 11th November The usual nondenominational remembrance service will be held at Cassington War Memorial commencing at 10.45a.m. Everyone is invited to this short service, which follows immediately after the service at St Peter’s Church. Please do not leave cars near the Memorial at this time.

4 Cassington War Memorial

The village has recently contributed very generously to the cleaning and repair of the War Memorial and therefore people may be interested to know something of its history. This information comes from Derek Waters, from his own knowledge and from the British Legion records he has. These records were made by Richard Collett when he was poppy appeal organiser for Cassington. Mr Collett also ensured that the memorial is included in the National Inventory of War Memorials held by the Imperial War Museum. The War Memorial stands on Cassington village green, a permanent testament to the futility of war. Commissioned by former vicar of Cassington, the Rev. C.G. Paget, who lost three sons on the First World War, it displays the names of nineteen village members who made the supreme sacrifice in the two World Wars. The work of erecting the memorial was carried out by W.H. Axtell and Son, Monumental Masons, of 22–3 Regent Street, and completed before February 1919. The memorial cross was designed by F.D. Howard of Oxford. The beautifully sculpted figures of Christ (facing west) and the Virgin Mary (facing east) mounted on the cross are the work of Alex Miller of Chipping Campden. The parish council is responsible for the War Memorial, paying the annual insurance necessary for its protection. Recently it has been discovered that there is a War Memorials Trust – it will be possible to apply for assistance with any future costs which may be incurred for repairs, though hopefully this will not be necessary for some time to come. 8 Bike is best

CASSINGTON WI A trial last month by BikeSafe (West Oxon) demonstrated that cycling is the most efficient way to travel into Oxford. U On 4th October J MBLE an electric bike was used in a challenge to raise awareness of the need for a four- mile community path along the SALE B4044 road from Saturday Eynsham to Botley. The road is a key commuter route from 3rd November Witney and Eynsham, but there is currently no provision for pedestrians and non-motorised traffic along much of the in the Village Hall road. Cyclists find the narrow, winding road intimidating, especially as many buses and lorries use the route. Doors open 2pm The time-trial journey began at 7.50 am in the village Admission 20p square in Eynsham and took a route along the busy B4044 road through Farmoor, into Dean Court and up the Botley Produce, cakes and teas Road, finishing at the Costa coffee shop in Queen Street, central Oxford. Other participants included cyclists, runners and rollerbladers, as well as car drivers, motorcyclists and bus passengers. The rider of the electric bike arrived first, taking 22 minutes, 30 minutes ahead of the bus and car passengers who took 52 minutes. The first runner arrived only 2 minutes after the bus and car passengers, having completed the seven-mile route in 54 minutes. Organiser Ian Leggett, of Farmoor, said: “A community path will increase choice of travel, and this challenge has proved that cycling is more efficient than other modes of travel – every one of the cyclists arrived in Oxford at least 10 minutes before the car drivers and bus passengers. What we hope our event shows is that relatively small amounts of money dedicated to infrastructure for cycling and walking will make a huge difference.” As the traffic has built up over the years, many of the residents along the road have become isolated, including those from a nursing home near Farmoor, who have no pedestrian access to shops situated 300 metres away. In addition, Oxfordshire County Council’s Hill End Environment Education Centre is only accessible by car so children coming to learn at the certified Eco Centre are prevented from reaching it in an environmentally friendly way. The community path would also help to reduce congestion, reduce CO2 emissions, increase individuals’ fitness across the community, and allow children to cycle safely to their schools in Eynsham and Botley. A feasibility study by Sustrans, the cycling and sustainable transport charity confirmed the practicability of the proposal but the community path has recently been dropped from Oxfordshire County Council’s transport proposal. Part of the purpose of the BikeSafe campaign is to challenge that decision. 9 I will leave parking alone; I seem to Eynsham Winter Art Weekend Roy’s have caused enough trouble over this. 24th and 25th November 11am–5pm ramblings...
