THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PALEONTOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS May 15, 1970 Paper 47 SIGNIFICANCE OF SUTURES IN PHYLOGENY OF AMMONOIDEA JURGEN KULLMANN AND JOST WIEDMANN Universinit Tubingen, Germany ABSTRACT Because of their complex structure ammonoid sutures offer best possibilities for the recognition of homologies. Sutures comprise a set of individual elements, which may be changed during the course of ontogeny and phylogeny as a result of heterotopy, hetero- morphy, and heterochrony. By means of a morphogenetic symbol terminology, sutural formulas may be established which show the composition of adult sutures as well as their ontogenetic development. WEDEKIND ' S terminology system is preferred because it is the oldest and morphogenetically the most consequent, whereas RUZHENTSEV ' S system seems to be inadequate because of its usage of different symbols for homologous elements. WEDEKIND ' S system includes only five symbols: E (for external lobe), L (for lateral lobe), I (for internal lobe), A (for adventitious lobe), U (for umbilical lobe). Investigations on ontogenetic development show that all taxonomic groups of the entire superorder Ammonoidea can be compared one with another by means of their sutural development, expressed by their sutural formulas. Most of the higher and many of the lower taxa can be solely characterized and arranged in phylogenetic relationship by use of their sutural formulas. MOJSISOVICS(1873) and 1902), M. NEUMAYR(1879) und F. WÄHNER(1882-1898) durchgeführt wurde. Die beschriebenen Taxa werden in den Sammlungen der Geologischen Bundesanstalt und des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien sowie der Bayerischen Staatssammlung in Mün- chen aufbewahrt. Außerdem wird das neue Ammonitengenus Togaticeras und Fergusonites neumayri sp.nov. beschrieben. Weiters werden phyllogenetische Probleme der obertriadischen und liassischen Phylloceratiden und deren mögliche Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen zu jurassischen Taxa diskutiert. Abstract This article deals with the reassessment of the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic Phylloceratid cephalopods which was carried out on the original specimens of F. HAUER(1846). E. MOJSISOVICS(1873 and 1902), M. NEUMAYR(1879) and F. WÄHNER(1882-1898). The subject specimens are deposited in the collections of GBA and NHM in Vienna (Austria) as well as in BSM in Munich (Germany). -

Carnets Geol. 21 (13) E-ISSN 1634-0744 DOI 10.2110/carnets.2021.2113 Kimmeridgian and early Tithonian cephalopods from the Kisújbánya Limestone Formation, Zengővárkony (Mecsek Mountains, southern Hungary), their faunal composition, palaeobiogeographic affinities, and taphonomic character László BUJTOR 1, 2 Richárd ALBRECHT 1, 3 Csaba FARKAS 1, 4 Bertalan MAKÓ 1, 5 Dávid MARÓTI 1, 6 Ákos MIKLÓSY 1, 7 Abstract: A new collection at Zengővárkony (Mecsek Mountains, Hungary) provided a rich and diverse but poorly preserved cephalopod-dominated fossil assemblage representing the Kimmeridgian and the lower Tithonian. The material came from mixed scree, soil, and amongst roots affected by weathering processes having been exposed to the elements for a long time. The nautiloid Pseudaganides stram- bergensis is the first record from the Mecsek Mountains. Due to the weathering, the ammonite fauna consists of mainly fragmentary and dissolved individuals that comprises 528 specimens belonging to 34 species and 30 genera out of which 20 species and 15 genera are reported for the first time from the Mecsek Mountains. The fauna includes specimens of known taxa. No new taxa are introduced. Based on the comparison with other faunas, this assemblage most closely resembles the fauna of the Venetian Alps (Italy). Additional faunal elements include aptychi ( Laevaptychus latus , Lamellaptychus murocostatus) , belemnites ( Hibolithes semisulcatus ), and an indetermined brachiopod. The first record of Spiraserpula spirolinites , an encrusting fossil polychaete preserved on the internal mould of a Tara- melliceras shell fragment indicates favourable bottom conditions for the epifauna. The presence of Aspidoceras caletanum , Gravesia aff. gigas , and Pseudowaagenia inerme indicates faunal connections with the Submediterranean Province of the Tethys, which is in line with the tectonic and palaeogeogra- phical position of the Mecsek Zone during the Late Jurassic. -

Users can use simFossilRecord to simulate diversification in incompletely sampled fossil records, under various models of morphological differentiation (i.e. the various patterns by which morphotaxa originate from one another), and with time-dependent, longevity-dependent and/or diversity-dependent rates of diversification, extinction and sampling. Additional functions allow users to translate simulated ancestor-descendant data from simFossilRecord into standard time-scaled phylogenies or unscaled cladograms that reflect the relationships among taxon units. -

Cuza” University of Iaşi, Faculty of Geography and Geology, Department of Geology, 20A Carol I Blv., 700505 Iaşi, Romania Abstract In 1900, Uhlig proposed five new species of ammonites and one brachiopod species, Early Jurassic in age, from the Praşca Klippe (Rarău Syncline, Eastern Carpathians). “Rhacophyllites” bucovinicus is the only phylloceratid described, which displays a very wide umbilicus and a unique small keel near the aperture. Following Uhlig’s holotype, new specimens were found, only recently, and a topotype series was formed. After the Uhlig’s holotype, new specimens were found only recently forming a topotype series. Previously quoted records in different areas (e.g. Bocskorbergs – Bakony Mountains, Hungary; Montagna del Casale – Sicily, Italy; Hierlatz – Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria; Male Karpaty – Western Carpathians, Slovakia ) are discussed, as well as the modern assignment of the species. They are assigned to Juraphyllites (cf.) mimatensis (D’ORBIGNY , 1845) and re- garded as Tethyan immigrants. Due to their very similar early ontogenetic stages it seems impossible to distinguish tiny juveniles of Juraphyllites mimatensis (D’ORBIGNY , 1845) from those of contemporaneous Meneghiniceras exi- mium (V. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS PALEONTOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS June 15, 1973 Paper 62 THE INFLUENCE OF THEORETICAL IDEAS ON AMMONITE CLASSIFICATION FROM HYATT TO TRUEMAN D. T. DONOVAN University College, London, England ABSTRACT The origins of the theory of recapitulation as applied to the evolution of fossil groups are examined. The theory is shown to have originated independently at least three times, with L. Agassiz and Hyatt, Müller and Haeckel, and S. S. Buckman, respectively. Hyatt further introduced the idea of cycles of evolution whereby many independent lineages underwent similar changes. Buckman, like Hyatt before him, applied recapitulation and cyclic evolution to prob- lems of the systematics of Jurassic ammonites. He recognized, however, that recapitulation was imperfect and that some stages of phylogeny were often omitted from ontogeny, especially when a more direct development was thereby produced. Buckman's application of recapitulation was accompanied by extreme taxonomic splitting. Trueman applied the theory of recapitulation to the Lower Jurassic family Liparo- ceratidae and reconstructed nine lineages each evolving front capricorn to sphaerocone form. This interpretation was later challenged by Spath. Trueman and Williams later attempted to use the theory to elucidate the family Echioceratidae but were unable to trace any lineages. Pavlov and Spath opposed the universal application by certain paleontologists of recapitulation theory and drew attention to sequences of fossils which did not support it. Their views were supported by biological critics of the theory. The theory was abandoned by English ammonite workers by the end of the 1920's. Dissertation zur Erlangung des Naturwissenschaftlichen Doktorgrades Der Bayerischen Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg vorgelegt von Mahmoud Reza Majidifard aus Teheran Würzburg, 2003-10-22 I To my wife and my daughter II Abstract The Middle and Upper Jurassic sedimentary successions of Alborz in northern Iran and Koppeh Dagh in northeastern Iran comprise four formations; Dalichai, Lar (Alborz) and Chaman Bid, Mozduran (Koppeh Dagh). In this thesis, the biostratigraphy, lithostratigraphy, microfacies, depositional environments and palaeobiogeography of these rocks are discussed with special emphasis on the abundant ammonite fauna. They constitute a more or less continuous sequence, being confined by two tectonic events, one at the base, in the uppermost part of the Shemshak Formation (Bajocian), the so-called Mid-Cimmerian Event, the other one at the top (early Cretaceous), the so-called Late-Cimmerian Event. The lowermost unit constitutes the uppermost member of a siliciclastic and partly continental depositional sequence known as Shemshak Formation. It contains a fairly abundant ammonite fauna ranging in age from Aalenian to early Bajocian. The following unit (Dalichai Formation) begins everywhere with a significant marine transgression of late Bajocian age. The following four sections were measured: The Dalichai section (97 m) with three members; the Golbini-Jorbat composite section (449 m) with three members of the Dalichai Formation (414 m) and two members of the Lar Formation (414 m); the Chaman Bid section (1556 m) with seven members, and the Tooy-Takhtehbashgheh composite section (567 m) with three members of the Dalichai Formation (567 m) and four members of the Mozduran Formation (1092 m). -
