10 MARKETS

In Paris there are many good, cheap, and local markets and these are some of our favourites for food, antiques, bric-à-brac and more!

MARCHÉ D’ALIGRE

The market is located in a very lively neighbourhood and it is one of Paris’ cheapest locations for grocery shopping. There are lots of different stands which sell fruits and vegetables and in addition to that there are a lot of stalls which put out their products by the pavement and sell them for reduced prices. You can find a couple of stands of organic products too, which are a little more pricey. Among them, meat, fish, cheese and dairy products, also the Boulangerie Moisan (Le Pain au naturel) is located just by the market, which makes amazing bread and pastries. Nearby shop Sabah carries a lot of Indian and Thai products, as well as spices and nuts for very affordable prices. There is a covered market just by the d’Aligre called Beauvau where you can buy quality food for higher prices, such as products imported directly from Italy (we strongly recommend buffalo mozzarella and Parma ham).

PRICE EXAMPLES Place d’Aligre, 75012 Paris Bananas for 1,39€/kg Plums for 1,10€/kg Tuesday-Saturday Potatoes for 1€/per bag 9am-1pm // Sweet Potatoes for 2,39€/kg 4pm-7:30 pm Clementines for 1,95€/kg White raisin for 1,95€/kg Sunday Carrots for 1€/per bag 9am-1:30pm Zucchini 1,10€/kg Granny Smith apples 1,59€/kg Monday Tomatoes 1,95€/kg Closed You can also find great deals on really ripe fruit - up to half off!

11 MARCHÉ MOUFFETARD

Located in one of Paris’ oldest street surrounded by old buildings, this market is perfect for people who enjoy good quality food. It’s more expensive than Marché d’Aligre, but worth it a visit. Going to this market is not only a matter of amazing quality (even if the prices are a little high), but the atmosphere is great, it’s almost like being dragged into a slice of Parisian life, with street musicians and all. There are also a lot of nice cafés around where to enjoy an espresso. Most fruit and vegetables sold here are organic or fair-trade, and you can find seasonal products in every stand. Located around rue Mouffetard there are a lot of speciality shops, such as boucheries specialized in fine meat and fromageries specialized in cheese. There are also a few popular places that sell fresh fish and mussels for acceptable prices.

In the 4ème arrondissement you can find a plethora of designer boutiques, but also some more affordable thrift shops. In some of them, you pay according to the weight of what you buy, which can sometimes lead to extremely cheap finds. This is an obviously small selection as the 4ème is full to the brim with thrift shops.

Most of them were founded after French intellectuals decided to separate from the Notre Dame School (yes, that one), and all classes were taught in Latin, which is where the neighborhood got its name. Some of them date back from the 12th Century.
