3rd March 2017 STANDING OUT THE MAGAZINE FOR MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY Cover: Year 7 Visit Newlyn Gallery 12th July 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Make every day a new adventure…… Our campus has been buzzing with excited activity all week as the whole Academy has been enjoying the sunshine during our ‘Adventure Learning’ week. As usual this newsletter is full of all the action packed learning our students have undertaken, which I am pleased to say has been outstanding and quite a lot of fun too! Of course at Mounts Bay our week very rarely ends on a Friday at 3:15pm and last week was no exception. Miss Osborne and her team organised a spectacular Year 11 Ball at Lands End last Friday and it was wonderful to see just how grown up some of our most familiar faces have become. It was probably the last the last time we would see them all in the same place, at once, and the evening was a great way to wish them all the best for the future and say goodbye. There are loads of pictures in this week’s newsletter and many more on our website, so make sure you take a look. Click here to see the photos online: http://mountsbay.org/year-11-ball-2019 And as we said farewell to one fantastic group of students, we said hello to another when we welcomed our new Year 7 students to the Academy for their transition day. This gave our new students the chance to experience some of our adventurous learning and the opportunity to meet their new tutors and get to know the campus. We enjoyed having them for the day and I was pleased to meet so many of their parents during our evening transition event. Click here to see the photos online: http://mountsbay.org/transition-day-2019 Our record label, ‘Qube Records’ has been busy too, with a series of gigs around Penzance finishing up with a Summer Concert at Penlee Open Air Theatre. There was a huge audience and everyone was amazed by the Good Luck Molly talent on show. Our fifth Academy album will be launched at our Music Awards evening next week. We have so much outstanding young talent here that it will be a whopping double album of twenty six original songs, which will be available on CD and via download. I have had the privilege of hearing some of the tracks in advance which will be performed live next Wednesday 17th July at the launch, which promises to be great evening out. I look forward to seeing you there! Best wishes Les Hall - Academy Principal BE CURIOUS An Ocean of Words Year 7 students gathered at the Newlyn Fisherman Memorial this week to talk about the impact of the Atlantic Ocean on all of our lives. We discussed the design and impact of Tom Leaper’s statue in bronze. We then proceeded to use our discussion as a springboard to create a series of short poems (17 syllable Haiku) to celebrate aspects of our relationship locally and globally with the Atlantic. Our Atlantic, Our Future Our Atlantic, Our Future Our ocean is vast, Plastic Pollution But it is under great threat. Harming our beaches and sea, Changes must be made. We need to stop it. In the speechless waves. Libby - 7 Purple Isla - 7 Purple Report by: Mr Whiteman BE CURIOUS Year 7 Newlyn Gallery Visit Year 7 students visited Newlyn Gallery this week. After an introductory talk about the history of the gallery, Year 7 were introduced to the collection of films, paintings and photographs on show. The exhibition borrows its title from Max Ernst’s painting ‘Europe after the Rain II’. Taking its lead from this work, the exhibition presents visions of dystopian terrains and possible landscapes to come. Although many of the artworks do create a sense of foreboding, they also present visions of renewal and growth within an emerging and imagined world. Year 7 drew from the exhibition, created digital artwork responses using their iPads and gathered source material for their creative projects later in the week. Report by: Mrs Dale BE CURIOUS Botanical Drawing Year 7 kick started their Adventure Learning Week by exploring alternative approaches to botanical drawing. Report by: Miss Green BE CURIOUS Boat Building Newlyn Green Art Walk Students in Year 7 were very creative this week. Inspiration for a piece of art work was provided when students had the opportunity to walk to Roger's Tower at Castle-an-Dinas via Trevaylor Woods. They made sketches and began watercolours outdoors which they completed on their return to the Academy. BE CURIOUS Physical Creativity Year 7 took part in physical creativity sessions to find out how they can use creativity and team building to meet their outcomes and develop new ideas. Students used their listening skills to help them reach conclusions. One activity involved teams competing against each other to sort and construct a riddle and a poem from their deconstructed constituent parts. Report by: Miss Walters Sculpture Mr Cross led a scrap wood sculpture day for Year 7 students. They threw themselves into the challenge and created some weird and wonderful pieces of work using their new skills. It was a really productive, fun and creative day and all of the students were amazing! Report by: Miss Hewitt BE CURIOUS Skimboard and Surfboard Design This week Year 7 have been working collaboratively to produce some innovative skimboard and skateboard designs. They have linked together all of their experiences from the week to accumulate into a finished outcome, that will be exhibited at the REAL Project Exhibition. Students have explored a range of exciting imagery within the project and have been working with acrylic paint on a large scale. They have produced a range of brilliant outcomes! Well done Year 7! Report by: Miss Green BE CURIOUS Links to Slavery On Thursday 11th July 50 Year 7 students walked to Trengwainton Gardens. Trengwainton has strong links to Worthy Park in Jamaica and the sugar slave trade. Students received a brief history of the triangular slave trade and how this funded the building of certain areas in Heamoor. Students had a look around the various gardens and the many displays before following the path through the stream garden, across the bridge to the terrace next to the big house. Firstly students were warned to avoid the Ha-ha and we discussed the reason for having these in many country estates. The view from there is amazing and the slate toposcope was a great focus of discussion for location and the surrounding area; looking down to the Atlantic and linking into this week’s poetry project. Report by: Miss Dowrick BE CURIOUS Dragons Den For their final two days the Year 7s opted to take part in a creative option. One group took part in Dragons Den learning about businesses, branding and becoming entrepreneurs. Once in teams each group came up with their own product or service and developed their own brands. The ideas coming from each team were fantastic and they are to be commended on their excellent teamwork skills and creativity. During the final lesson they pitched their ideas and plans for their business. Examples of their businesses include an eco supermarket, personalised chocolate, multi-use games controller and an eco surf brand. Well done Year 7! Report by: Miss Walters BE INSPIRED Year 8 Explore Heritage Year 8 students had a chance to explore their own heritage during this week. They watched an interesting film produced by the Cornish Heritage Trust retelling the story of St Piran and this was followed by a fantastic retelling of the ‘Mermaid of Zennor’ made by Liam and Grace last year. The students used this information to inspire them to make their own video/project based around Cornish Heritage. Mr Rodgers will be selecting the best of the bunch to take to the Cornish Festival being held in Wisconsin USA in September next year. Traditional Games Mr Williams organised some traditional games for Year 8 students this week and he picked two classics: cricket and rounders. Students were split into groups to enjoy some kwik-cricket and rounders on the bottom field whilst soaking up the brilliant Cornish sunshine. Penlee In 1981 the Penlee lifeboat disaster affected the local community in Mousehole and beyond. This week Year 8 students watched the BBC documentary that told the story of the brave men who were lost in the tragedy. Students showed great respect during the showing of the documentary and it inspired them to do their own research about the incident and the RNLI in general, adding some really great work to their exhibition project. Exhibition Friday period 4 gave Year 8 students the opportunity to show off their learning for the week. They produced some excellent end products including posters, keynotes and iMovies. Report by: Miss Tripp Coats of Arms As part of their week based on heritage and tradition, students had a history lesson about Coats of Arms. Students had the chance to learn about the development of the intricately designed symbols from the medieval knights of the templar to how premier league clubs use coats of arms as their logos. They had a chance to look at the developments of coats of arms from the time of the Bayeux Tapestry to modern day logos.
