12th July 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Make every day a new adventure…… Our campus has been buzzing with excited activity all week as the whole Academy has been enjoying the sunshine during our ‘Adventure Learning’ week. As usual this newsletter is full of all the action packed learning our students have undertaken, which I am pleased to say has been outstanding and quite a lot of fun too!

Of course at Mounts Bay our week very rarely ends on a Friday at 3:15pm and last week was no exception. Miss Osborne and her team organised a spectacular Year 11 Ball at Lands End last Friday and it was wonderful to see just how grown up some of our most familiar faces have become. It was probably the last the last time we would see them all in the same place, at once, and the evening was a great way to wish them all the best for the future and say goodbye. There are loads of pictures in this week’s newsletter and many more on our website, so make sure you take a look.

And as we said farewell to one fantastic group of students, we said hello to another when we welcomed our new Year 7 students to the Academy for their transition day. This gave our new students the chance to experience some of our adventurous learning and the opportunity to meet their new tutors and get to know the campus. We enjoyed having them for the day and I was pleased to meet so many of their parents during our evening transition event. Click here to see the photos online: http://mountsbay.org/transition-day-2019 Our record label, ‘Qube Records’ has been busy too, with a series of gigs around finishing up with a Summer Concert at Penlee Open Air Theatre. There was a huge audience and everyone was amazed by the Good Luck Molly talent on show. Our fifth Academy album will be launched at our Music Awards evening next week. We have so much outstanding young talent here that it will be a whopping double album of twenty six original songs, which will be available on CD and via download.

I have had the privilege of hearing some of the tracks in advance which will be performed live next Wednesday 17th July at the launch, which promises to be great evening out. I look forward to seeing you there! Best wishes

An Ocean of Words

Year 7 students gathered at the Newlyn Fisherman Memorial this week to talk about the impact of the Atlantic Ocean on all of our lives. We discussed the design and impact of Tom Leaper’s statue in bronze. We then proceeded to use our discussion as a springboard to create a series of short poems (17 syllable Haiku) to celebrate aspects of our relationship locally and globally with the Atlantic.

Our Atlantic, Our Future Our Atlantic, Our Future

Our ocean is vast, Plastic Pollution But it is under great threat. Harming our beaches and sea, Changes must be made. We need to stop it.

Year 7 Newlyn Gallery Visit

Year 7 students visited Newlyn Gallery this week. After an introductory talk about the history of the gallery, Year 7 were introduced to the collection of films, paintings and photographs on show. The exhibition borrows its title from Max Ernst’s painting ‘Europe after the Rain II’. Taking its lead from this work, the exhibition presents visions of dystopian terrains and possible landscapes to come. Although many of the artworks do create a sense of foreboding, they also present visions of renewal and growth within an emerging and imagined world.

Year 7 drew from the exhibition, created digital artwork responses using their iPads and gathered source material for their creative projects later in the week.

Art Walk

Students in Year 7 were very creative this week. Inspiration for a piece of art work was provided when students had the opportunity to walk to Roger's Tower at Castle-an-Dinas via Trevaylor Woods. They made sketches and began watercolours outdoors which they completed on their return to the Academy. BE CURIOUS

Physical Creativity

Year 7 took part in physical creativity sessions to find out how they can use creativity and team building to meet their outcomes and develop new ideas. Students used their listening skills to help them reach conclusions. One activity involved teams competing against each other to sort and construct a riddle and a poem from their deconstructed constituent parts. Report by: Miss Walters

Sculpture

Mr Cross led a scrap wood sculpture day for Year 7 students. They threw themselves into the challenge and created some weird and wonderful pieces of work using their new skills. It was a really productive, fun and creative day and all of the students were amazing!

Skimboard and Surfboard Design

This week Year 7 have been working collaboratively to produce some innovative skimboard and skateboard designs. They have linked together all of their experiences from the week to accumulate into a finished outcome, that will be exhibited at the REAL Project Exhibition. Students have explored a range of exciting imagery within the project and have been working with acrylic paint on a large scale. They have produced a range of brilliant outcomes! Well done Year 7!

Links to Slavery

On Thursday 11th July 50 Year 7 students walked to Trengwainton Gardens. Trengwainton has strong links to Worthy Park in Jamaica and the sugar slave trade. Students received a brief history of the triangular slave trade and how this funded the building of certain areas in Heamoor.

Students had a look around the various gardens and the many displays before following the path through the stream garden, across the bridge to the terrace next to the big house.

Firstly students were warned to avoid the Ha-ha and we discussed the reason for having these in many country estates. The view from there is amazing and the slate toposcope was a great focus of discussion for location and the surrounding area; looking down to the Atlantic and linking into this week’s poetry project.

Dragons Den

For their final two days the Year 7s opted to take part in a creative option. One group took part in Dragons Den learning about businesses, branding and becoming entrepreneurs. Once in teams each group came up with their own product or service and developed their own brands. The ideas coming from each team were fantastic and they are to be commended on their excellent teamwork skills and creativity. During the final lesson they pitched their ideas and plans for their business. Examples of their businesses include an eco supermarket, personalised chocolate, multi-use games controller and an eco surf brand. Well done Year 7!

Year 8 Explore Heritage Year 8 students had a chance to explore their own heritage during this week. They watched an interesting film produced by the Cornish Heritage Trust retelling the story of St Piran and this was followed by a fantastic retelling of the ‘Mermaid of Zennor’ made by Liam and Grace last year. The students used this information to inspire them to make their own video/project based around Cornish Heritage. Mr Rodgers will be selecting the best of the bunch to take to the Cornish Festival being held in Wisconsin USA in September next year.

Traditional Games Mr Williams organised some traditional games for Year 8 students this week and he picked two classics: cricket and rounders. Students were split into groups to enjoy some kwik-cricket and rounders on the bottom field whilst soaking up the brilliant Cornish sunshine.

Penlee In 1981 the Penlee lifeboat disaster affected the local community in and beyond. This week Year 8 students watched the BBC documentary that told the story of the brave men who were lost in the tragedy. Students showed great respect during the showing of the documentary and it inspired them to do their own research about the incident and the RNLI in general, adding some really great work to their exhibition project.

Exhibition Friday period 4 gave Year 8 students the opportunity to show off their learning for the week. They produced some excellent end products including posters, keynotes and iMovies. Report by: Miss Tripp Coats of Arms

As part of their week based on heritage and tradition, students had a history lesson about Coats of Arms. Students had the chance to learn about the development of the intricately designed symbols from the medieval knights of the templar to how premier league clubs use coats of arms as their logos. They had a chance to look at the developments of coats of arms from the time of the Bayeux Tapestry to modern day logos. Students were then asked to design their own coat of arms shield that they thought represented them, using colours and symbols. BE INSPIRED

Year 8 Explore Heritage With the theme of Heritage at the heart of the Year 8 learning this week, students had a chance to expand their knowledge beyond the borders of Penzance and in their Heritage around the world session. This session questioned the differences between heritage, tradition and culture. Students visited the UNESCO World Heritage Sites website and were given the opportunity to investigate the 1000+ sites that have this status around the world. In small groups students were asked to pick 2 or 3 of the heritage sites and create an in-depth research project on their chosen heritage site, as well as researching and recording facts on the county in which their chosen site can be found.

Students picked a variety of sites from the world famous Great Barrier Reef and the pyramids of Giza to smaller less known sites such as the Mogoa Caves. There were a variety of presentation methods used including keynotes, hand drawn posters and iMovies.

“Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.” - UNESCO

Trengwainton Gardens

Year 8 visited Trengwainton Gardens this week to explore our local heritage. Gardens and horticulture are a big part of being British and an even bigger part of being Cornish. We looked at some popular flowers such as the hydrangea, which are abundant locally, but can cost up to £10 per flower in Covent Garden! We also looked at the history of the house and how it was built to impress visitors (which also explains the Ha-ha at the end of the garden). They discussed the house existing due to profits from slavery and how it has become part of the National Trust. We all agreed that this was a good course of action! Finally we saw some amazing Californian Redwoods with students being amazed by how soft and fuzzy the bark is (as well as the unbelievable height!). On Wednesday and Thursday we were also joined by Mr Thomas, who was completing his Year 10 work experience by supporting as a member of teaching staff. Students certainly came away with a deeper understanding of how important Trengwainton is to our local identity.

Isles of Scilly Trip

This week, 80 students in Year 8 travelled to the Isles of Scilly over three days. We were blessed with incredible weather and smooth crossings, which allowed the students to enjoy the fantastic coast line on the journey out. Mrs Astley provided excellent commentary on the history of the Cornish coast, which our students and members of the public enjoyed.

Whilst on the Isles of Scilly, students walked around the Garrison, stopping for lunch overlooking St Agnes. They then enjoyed some spare time to explore Hugh Town and get a feel for Island life. Before the return journey, the students took part in some sports on the beach.

Year 9 - Leadership Day

As part of the Year 9 Adventure Learning Week students took part in a range of Leadership Activities. These included analysing famous people from the real world and fiction and identifying and discussing their leadership qualities and attributes; much discussion was had over whether Bob the Builder or Donkey from Shrek is the better leader!

Following this students had the opportunity to gain practical experience of leading either through a range of team building games or for Tuesday's group, leading the new Year 7 students through their transition PE activities.

To round the day off the Year 9 students were able to take full advantage of the great weather this week and enjoy the slip and slide! A great week Year 9. Well done!

Beach Safety

All Year 9 students visited Porthmeor beach this week to learn about beach safety. Considering our geographic location, this is a really important day where students learn together how to stay safe.

Students began the day with a talk from Mr Blackabey about basic first aid and safety on the beach. We then went to Porthmeor and were given a talk by the lifeguards on beach safety and the first aid kit they use, as well as the equipment they use such as the jet ski. Mr Blackabey then set up the competition surf lifesaving game called ‘flags’. Students then had the opportunity to go in the water in the afternoon. It has been a great week with lots and learning and fun.

Team Building

Team Building took place on Beach this week. Year 9 students were teamed up and pitted against eachother in a range of challenges designed to test leadership, communication, cooperation and creativity. The students clearly rose to the challenge and on Wednesday we saw a record for the school, the first time that all groups successfully completed the ‘Elevated Perch’ challenge, whereby they build a structure to hold 8 students above the height of Mr Harvey's football injury scar. Well done Year 9. Report by: Mr Floyd BE ADVENTUROUS

This week the Year 9 students have enjoyed the beautiful weather and fantastic scenery whilst geocaching around Cape Cornwall. Armed with maps they (mostly!) led the way in a circular tour starting at , walking past Levant Mine, finding the little black geocache boxes (with the help of Mr 's Geocache app and GPS system) along the way, with a stop at Little Wonder Cafe at Cape Cornwall for ice cream! The rest breaks along the way led to the lovely big questions being asked, like "why is the sky blue?" and "why do planes leave that white trail behind?". Well done to Year 9 for their company this week - you have been amazing!

They started their training on the Monday of Adventure Learning week, with sessions on the countryside code, navigation, first aid and working towards their project. They camped on the school field which was their camp craft training. They did not make too much noise! Wednesday and Thursday were the expedition days. Groups walked, navigated camped and cooked by themselves with only remote supervision. On the whole they all did really well with only a few navigational errors. Congratulations to everyone involved and a huge thanks to the DofE staff. Scholars’ Programme Graduation

On Tuesday 9th July nine Year 10 students visited St John's College, Oxford University for the graduation from the Scholars’ Programme. The programme involved the students working with a Phd tutor over six weeks on a supa-curricular project. To successfully complete the course they needed to complete a 2000 word assignment which was graded at ‘A’ Level standard.

Over the course of 2019 twenty Year 10 students have completed the Scholars’ Programme in two cohorts. The students in the first cohort have received their marks for their assignments. Katie and Marlene received first class passes, which equates to their work being outstanding for an ‘A’ Level student. Tia, Kelci, Jacca, Asha, Beth and Harry were all awarded a 2:1 which is equivalent to good at ‘A’ Level and Jack received a 2:2 which means his work was outstanding at GCSE level which is impressive considering that all the students completed their assignments in the middle of Year 10.

We were joined at the graduation by four students from Five Islands School that we were able to include as part of our programme. We feel that a powerful part of the programme is giving our students the opportunity to work with ambitious students from other schools.

Congratulations to all the students on their achievements and we look forward to seeing what our second group of students achieve when their assignments are marked in the coming days.

South Korean Visitors

A group of 12 South Korean students have been camping out in the Academy this week. Having flown thousands of miles from Incheon in South Korea (a city of 4 million people), the students overnighted at Heathrow airport on Saturday before the long train journey to Penzance on Sunday. After a brief tour of Tesco, I cooked spaghetti bolognese for them in Mr Bromfield’s room - the spaghetti proving more popular than the sauce!

From Monday the Koreans got stuck into Adventure Learning week, each with a partner in Year 9. This gave them a unique opportunity to experience our wonderful Cornish countryside, including Marazion beach and Penwith Moors. Nothing like this happens in Korea. The students are driven to study relentlessly and the idea of taking a week off to gain leadership skills was one that they could not quite understand.

They have had a brilliant time: beach barbecue at Marazion, fish and chips from Frasers and Dominoes pizza on their final night!

We’re excited about the possibility of a return visit to Korea at the end of the year. This will be announced in September, so if you are interested in experiencing an entirely different culture be ready to get involved.

The inaugural meeting of the Mounts Bay Interact Group will take place onWednesday 15th July 3:20 - 4pm in the Main Hall.

Any Year 7 students are welcome, particularly those who were at the launch event with students from Humphry Davy and Marazion Schools. This is the groups chance to choose our charities, elect our officers and generally get our group up and running and ready to make a difference to Penzance, Cornwall, Europe and beyond! This is a group for those people who want to do things for other people rather than themselves and want to do their bit to make our world a better place. We will be fundraising, running events both in and out of school and raising awareness of our chosen charities throughout the Academy and beyond.

There will also be a chance to hear about an exciting International opportunity for students entering Year 8 in September - this opportunity is only available to Interact Group members. Come to the meeting to hear more - all a bit hush hush at the moment, but very very exciting.

Summer Festivals June and July are always the busiest months for us at Qube Records as we hurtle towards our new batch of releases and our summer awards show. This year has been no different, and we’ve been busy in the studio but also been able to play some great gigs out in the sunshine.

After lots of MBA music on Mazey Day, Quay Fair Day saw us perform an hour long showcase of brand new music on the Penzance prom. It was a beautiful day and we were blessed with a great audience! It marked the first ever live solo performance by Qube Records mainstay Morgan Kyle, which was a huge moment. This show also featured the debut of new material from Senara, Emily and Eve.

Next up Morgan, Ruby and Senara performed a short showcase at the amazing Pensans Literary Festival. It was another beautiful day and it was great to be part of such a cool event. We finished our little run of pre-album launch warm up gigs at the MBA Summer Concert at Penlee Open Air Theatre. It was a gorgeous evening and a brilliant way to sign off before next week’s big album launch show. We had an amazing time at all three gigs and we will hopefully be back at all three venues again next year!

Thank you to all the students who came and sang, and to everyone we met on our travels. Qube Records
