09 January 2018 Page 15 of 53 Area RefNo Digital Description 174 Photo of PZ 87 Rosebud. Two men before the skeleton of the 50 foot long coastal lugger, PZ 87 Rosebud. Under construction, it rests against its wooden frame alongside the Norra’rd Slip. One of the larger vessels of its type, was built at Newlyn in 1919 by Joseph Peake & Son. Raymond Peake, in discussion on 2.7.2013 said that 'PZ 87 Rosebud that his father built in Newlyn in 1919, should never be referred to as a lugger. She was built as a mackerel drifter with low sides to facilitate pulling in the nets over the sides. When the mackerel fishing declined she was used as a long-liner, but still carried nets for when the opportunity arose. Atomic 2-stroke diesel engines were fitted in 1935 and Raymond painted a dollar sign on the funnel for good luck.' The owners 1919-1945 were William 'Swell' Richards (skipper) and his brother Cecil Hugh Bourne Richards ( engineer). 192 Rosebud Issue of Cross Keys, October 1987 211 2 photos of families and the Crew and PZ 87 Rosebud at the House of Commons, 1937 356 Newlyn Clearances. Register of Houses. Background to journey of Rosebud to West minster 595 Colour photo of PZ87 Rosebud at Westminster. Charles Hoyland, decided to go up to London to photograph the boat. At the time he was experimenting with colour photography. Over 70 years later his son, Richard Hoyland, watched the recent Restoration Village programme which featured Trinity Chapel here in Newlyn. He recalled the photograph his father had taken and contacted the Newlyn website. The photograph is now safely ‘back home’ much to the pleasure of ourselves and Richard Hoyland. In a letter he made the observation that there must be thousands of photos mouldering away in boxes and drawers that could give such pleasure to others if their significance were only recognised. Taken in Dufaycolor on 120 size film, using a folding bellows type camera, typical for that period, the image shows that Mr Hoyland was a photographer of considerable merit. It is reproduced here and will shortly become available to all, now and in the future, from the photographic archive of Penlee House Gallery and Museum. Margaret Perry, August 23 2006. Ripple was built at St Ives and registered as SS19 on October 16, 1896. During World War I, this 34ft sailing pilchard driver helped to feed the nation when the enemy blockade was in place and the steam drifters and trawlers had been requisitioned by the Navy. So important was this task that many of the old luggers were mechanised and in October 1915, a 16HP Kelvin engine was fitted in Ripple marking the end of its days as a sailing lugger. 1893 Photo of the 44ft long SS 19 Ripple leaving Newlyn under power on a fishing trip between the wars. By 1927, the declining economy created pressures on fishermen to catch even more fish. Bigger boats were required and increasing the size of old boats was a cheap alternative to building new boats. In 1927 SS19 Ripple was taken to Joseph Peakes yard at Tolcarne where it was cut in half and an extra ten feet inserted. Bigger engines were fitted and Ripple fished out of Newlyn until a fire put an end to her fishing career in 1933. 1894 Photo. SS 19 Ripple fished out of Newlyn until a fire put an end to her fishing career in 1933. After that, Ripple was converted to a gentleman's yacht by Pearn’s boatyard at Looe. In World War II, it was called up for the Dunkirk Evacuation but engine failure prevented participation and a place in history. So for 50 years Ripple sat quietly in the being the summer houseboat retreat of the Tomlin family. 1895 Photo of the freshly tarred lugger SS 19 Ripple back at sea in 2009, the dark brown lug sails pulling hard above the black hull. In 1986 John Lambourn began the restoration (or resurrection) of SS19 Ripple which was completed off the Strand at Newlyn where many of the old boat builders had worked in the past. 1896 Text/Photos SS 19 Ripple 2245 Photo of lugger in Mounts Bay taken during WW2 from North Pier by George Curnow 2348 Collection of papers to do with Mount's Bay Lugger Association. 2610 Collection of papers relating to the West Cornwall Lugger Industry Trust. Operated by the American-owned Atlantic Transport Line, she was the sister ship of Minneapolis, Minnetonka, and Minnewaska. On 18 April 1910, the liner grounded on rocks on Bryher in the Isles of Scilly while en route from New York to Tilbury, near London; she remained stranded until 13 May when two tugs managed to pull her off the rocks. The cattle on board were saved by swimming them onto the island of Samson, Isles of Scilly where there was temporary pasture; no lives were lost. The ship was being used to ferry munitions to Britain from the U.S. during the early years of World War I. During a multi-state crime spree, German sympathizer Eric Muenter planted a timed bomb on the Minnehaha after bombing the U.S. Capitol and before shooting financier JP Morgan, Jn. Days after his jail-cell suicide, Muenter's bomb exploded, setting off a fire, though the explosion did not reach the munitions and caused minimal damage to the ship itself. On 7 September 1917, Minnehaha sank within four minutes with 43 fatalities, after being torpedoed by German U-boat U-48, off the Fastnet. He requests that Mr Blewett does not divulge the contents of the folder unnecessarily, as ‘if it were to get into the hands of someone who does not know the background it could be misleading.’ 5529 Brown A4 card dossier/folder with large front sticker showing a Tudor era ship, labelled ‘Exercise Raleigh’s Ark’. ‘Mr W H Blewett, Harbour Master, Newlyn’ handwritten in top left corner. Folder contains numerous bound typewritten documents – marked as ‘RESTRICTED’ – relating to the Royal Corp of Transport’s [RCT] ‘Exercise Raleigh’s Ark’, an apparently annual logistical training exercise for RCT officers, operating from an unknown year up until at least 1979. The exercise is a 1979 era NATO scenario wherein several Cornish ports, such as Newlyn, Falmouth, Par, etc, are substituted for towns in an imaginary country called ‘Armada’, which is assumed to be somewhere on the north Mediterranean shore. The purpose of the exercise is to train RCT officers in the reconnaissance and assessment of minor port complexes, and in planning the deployment and operating methods of a PSG (Port Squadron Group) supporting a UK force overseas. Sketch maps of the rail layout of several Cornish railway stations are supplied along with dimensions. 5535 Collection of material for Newlyn Harbour dated 1906. Filed by date. 09 January 2018 Page 51 of 53 Area RefNo Digital Description 6338 Photo of Frenchman Eric Taberly being towed into Newlyn Harbour by Clarance Ash after his trimaran Pen Duick lV was damaged by hurricane Brenda on 11/6/1968. Pen Duick IV had started off as a favourite in the single-handed Observer1968 Transatalantic race. Several vessels were knocked out of the race by a hurricane including Pen Duick IV which had to put into Newlyn very badly damaged and was unable to continue the race. Eric left Newlyn in Pen Duick lV on 12/6/1998. He was lost 80 miles north of Lands End later that day when he was knocked overboard off the South Wales coast. He was not single-handed at the time but on his way to Belfast on a stage of his voyage to take part in the Fife Regatta. Eric Taberlay, a Breton, was probably one of the leading yachtsmen of his time. He was born in 1931 in Nantes and was drowned off Pembrokeshire June 14, 1998. He was a former French naval officer and was considered the father of French yachting who won several races, Transatlantic and Round the world, setting record times in boats all called 'Pen Duick'. 6343 Notices abou the Newlyn Small Boats Pontoon Project c2006 6349 Collection of information to do with Newlyn Harbour dated 1969.
