Born One of Six Siblings in Raleigh, North Carolina, Mel Tomlinson Became Interested in Dance After Studying High School Gymnastics Born one of six siblings in Raleigh, North Carolina, Mel Tomlinson became interested in dance after studying high school gymnastics. When he was 17, he began formal dance study at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Tomlinson received his BFA degree in only two years, while he also toured as a principal dancer in Agnes De Mille's Heritage Dance Theatre and switched from a modern dance concentration to ballet. In 1974, he moved to New York to join Dance Theatre of Harlem, where his powerful build, crystalline articulation of line, and supple flexibility propelled him to soloist, most notably as the snake in Arthur Mitchell's "Manifestations" (1975). In 1976, Tomlinson took a leave of absence to perform with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, where he took over the male role in Ailey's "Pas de Duke" with Judith Jamison and premiered the revival of Lar Lubovitch's "The Time Before the Time After" ("After the Time Before") with Sara Yarborough. Discouraged by the heavy touring responsibilities of the Ailey Company, Tomlinson returned to Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1978 to perform principal roles in "Swan Lake" and "Scheherazade.” In 1981, he joined the New York City Ballet as its only African‐American member. He was quickly promoted to the rank of soloist, and his performance in George Balanchine's "Agon" was called "dynamic and electric" by the NEW YORK TIMES. Tomlinson left that company in 1987 to join the faculty at the North Carolina School of Arts. In 1991, he joined the Boston Ballet as a dancer and master teacher in the CITYDANCE program, bringing classical dance to public school children in the Boston area. .

TD writer Ellen Gerdes and historian/choreographer/performer Brenda Dixon Gottschild attended the opening night show. Their conversation, below, is a response that delves into questions of the contemporary relevance of Dance Theatre of Harlem, Balanchine, pink tights, and more... ----------------------- EG: Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) was co-founded by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook in 1969, a year before Joan Myers Brown founded PHILADANCO. Both companies were created in response to the dearth of opportunities for black dancers on the American proscenium stage, especially ballet. Artistic director Virginia Johnson describes the current DTH company as integrated and stresses that the ballet world still needs to wrestle with the lack of access to dancers of color. What do you think is the contemporary importance of a predominantly non-white ballet company? BDG: What this indicates to me is how little the dance world has changed. Back in 1970, when Joan Myers Brown started PHILADANCO , she had actually wanted to begin a black ballet company, but she knew that the American dance establishment would not be able to deal with two black ballet companies. Arthur Mitchell beat her to the punch by a year. Just to note, PHILADANCO is a ballet-based modern dance company, and that was Joan’s training and her backburner intention for the company.

Racial discrimination and institutional racism are key topics of this thesis, which will assess whether Eurocentric perceptions have contributed to black dancers’ slow progression in ballet. The historical construction of an ‘ideal’ white ballet body is analysed in relation to negative stereotypes of the black body that emerged from evolutionary theory and pseudo-science during the nineteenth century.

All Rights Reserved Abstract Body Impossible: Dynamics of Race, Sexuality, and Virtuosity in the Dance of Desmond Richardson by Ariel Osterweis Scott Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Shannon Jackson, Chair This dissertation theorizes the dance career of Desmond Richardson through the related paradigms of race, gender, and sexuality in order to generate a socio-culturally nuanced understanding of the concept of virtuosity in performance. I have selected four distinct performance contexts of the 1990s through which to analyze Richardson’s contribution to ballet and contemporary dance. Keeping questions of identity in the foreground, I interrogate both the racialized and gendered politics of concert dance companies and the role of versatility in Richardson’s career. Central to this dissertation are both the discourse of virtuosity and the mechanics of the production of virtuosity as a mode or quality. Richardson’s virtuosity is especially distinct in its harnessing of multiple dance styles and techniques. Despite his overall signature style, one that privileges hybridity over singularity, Richardson knowingly emphasizes certain techniques in certain settings in order to respond to the call of the work in question.
