Hopefully these will help you as you plan your Lenten and Sacred Triduum Celebrations. In respecting and following the Roman ritual, we catechize and form our faithful into a deeper understanding of the great mystery of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ and their full and active role in that mystery. GENERAL: Fasting: Catholics 18-59 in good health are required to fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is described as one main meal and then at two other times of the day a smaller collation or snack. Throughout Lent Catholics are encouraged to eat more simply. Abstinence: All Catholics 14 and older are required to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays during Lent. Flowers: During Lent, flowers are not to be used to decorate the altar with the exception of the Fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday), St. Joseph (March 19) and the Annunciation (March 25). Music: Musical instruments – the organ having pride of place – are only to be played to support the singing, except for Laetare Sunday when there can be more festive playing. Gloria: The Gloria is omitted except for Lenten Solemnities – St. Joseph and the Annunciation. Covering Crosses and Statues: If it is the custom of your parish to cover statues and crosses in purple or violet during Lent then this begins just before the Saturday Vigil of the Fifth Sunday of Lent.

In addition, a smaller meal, called a collation, was allowed in the evening. In practice, this obligation, which was a matter of custom rather than of written law, was not observed strictly. The 1917 Code of Canon Law allowed the full meal on a fasting day to be taken at any hour and to be supplemented by two collations, with the quantity and the quality of the food to be determined by local custom. Abstinence from meat was to be observed on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays and Saturdays in Lent. A rule of thumb is that the two collations should not add up to the equivalent of another full meal. Rather, portions were to be "sufficient to sustain strength, but not sufficient to satisfy hunger". In 1966, Saint Pope Paul VI reduced the obligatory fasting days to Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, abstinence days to Fridays, and allowed episcopal conferences to replace abstinence and fasting with other forms of penitence such as charity and piety, as declared and established in his apostolic constitution Paenitemini. This was done so that those in countries where the standard of living is lower can replace fasting with prayer, but "...where economic well-being is greater, so much more will the witness of asceticism have to be given..." As the United States is a country where economic well-being is greater, our witness to asceticism will, of course, have to be greater.

DISCUSSION: In 1741, a year after his election to the See of Peter, Pope Benedict XIV wrote eloquently on the importance of Lent: The observance of Lent is the very badge of the Christian warfare. By it we prove ourselves not to be enemies of the Cross of Christ. By it we avert the scourges of divine justice. By it we gain strength against the princes of darkness, for it shields us with heavenly help. Should mankind grow remiss in their observance of Lent, it would be a detriment to God’s glory, a disgrace to the Catholic religion, and a danger to Christian souls. Neither can it be doubted that such negligence would become the source of misery to the world, of public calamity, and of private woe.[1] At the beginning of His public life, Jesus was tempted for 40 days in the desert (Mt. 4:1–11; Mk. 1:12–13; Lk. 4:1–13). “By the solemn 40 days of Lent,” the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, “the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert.”[2] The Church has also officially set aside this time as a season of penance: The seasons and days of penance in the course of the liturgical year (Lent, and each Friday in memory of the death of the Lord) are intense moments of the Church’s penitential practice.

WESTERN ORTHODOX RULES FOR FASTING: Introduction In any discussion of fasting within the universal Church, one must be aware that until very recent times uniformity of practice has never prevailed in East or West Perhaps more than any other aspect of church observance – with the possible exception of local calendars of saints – fasting observances have varied considerably from place to place, diocese to diocese, rite to rite, country to country. What has always been maintained, however, is the importance of the principle of fasting at certain times and seasons. Only in Protestantism, modern Roman Catholicism, and even in some modernist Orthodox jurisdictions, have the discipline and wisdom of fasting been abandoned or lost The discipline of fasting and abstinence set forth here reflects that of the Western-Rite Orthodox monastic community of Christ the Saviour, as received originally into the Russian Orthodox Church, and later into the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. Fasting and abstinence should always be reverently and prayerfully observed and should never become the occasion for any kind of pharisaical judgments or of self-righteous comparisons with those who may be less observant. Indeed, as our Lord has told us, our fasting and abstinence should be observed in such a way that no one will think to compliment it or comment on it. Our observance must be permeated with charity and humility, done out 1 of love for God and sorrow for our sins, and should never be a source of contention or pride.
