We believe it is one of designer Eric Broadleyʼs greatest cars, so turn to page 16 to see what our resident racer made of the original prototype at Donington Park. Although the coupe is arguably more iconic, the open version of the T70 was more successful. Developed in 1965, the Group 7 machine could take a number of di erent V8 engines and was ideal for the inaugural Can-Am contest in ʼ66. P.1 of 3 84. 1999C Ferrari 048; 2997cc; 750 HP @ 16,500 RPM (574) (This engine is not included in Appendix I) As described in Eg. 83 Ferrari were handicapped badly in 1999 when Schumacher was unable to score in 7 races. The rear brake failure at the 8th race (British), when a bleed nipple came loose (1014) left his car in a head-on collision with a tyre barrier and the driver lucky to escape with a broken leg. Nevertheless the team, profiting from McLaren’s missed victories – Jordan-Mugen took 1 win and the new Stewart-Cosworth team took another while Schumacher was hors-de- combat – was able to win the 1999 Constructors’ title with the type 048 V10 engine powering the F399 car. 1989 – 1994 3.5L V12s This 1999 season was Ferrari’s 1st title since 1983, during the TC era (see Eg. 65). Ferrari’s later 1.5L TC-engined cars ( developments of the 120V6 of Eg. 65 and a later 90V6, all of the same B/S ratio of 1.67 (81/48.4), the latter designed by Jean-Jacque His, ex-Renault) had been unsuccessful against, firstly, the McLaren-Porsche combination, then the Williams- and McLaren-Hondas, as already described. In the 3rd NA era beginning at 3.5L in 1989, Ferrari had for 4 ½ years (1989 – late 1993) pinned their faith to a 65V12 5 v/c configuration (types 036 to 040), gradually raising the B/S ratio from 84/52.6 = 1.6 (1989), then 86/50.2 = 1.71 (1990) finally 88/47.9 = 1.84 (1991 – part 1994), adopting along the way PVRS, VIS and even variable-length exhausts (later banned by the FIA).

The "formula", designated in the name, refers to a set of rules with which all participants' cars must comply. The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (from French, originally meaning great prizes), held throughout the world on purpose-built circuits and public roads. The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors.

  • Rocket Man Com
The Gordon Murray Interview iven the nature of Low Flying‘s readership it might seem almost patronising to write an introduction to this piece. If you know anything about GFormula One design or about the fi rst (and arguably still the best) ‘hypercar’ ever made - the McLaren F1 - then Professor Ian Gordon Murray won’t need any introduction from me. Feel free to cut straight to the chase and read Gordon’s thoughts on my questions, but be warned - no punches are pulled. Do try to remember his full name though as it helps with the answer to my fi rst question. If however, you are reading this Lowfl ying in the dentist’ s waiting room whilst angsting about the root canal work you’re about to have done and this magazine just seemed to offer a better read than the ratty copies of Hello on offer, this intro is just for you. Gordon Murray was born in Durban in 1946. He emigrated to the UK in 1969 and worked for Brabham, becoming head designer in 1973 and going on to design some of the most beautiful Grand Prix cars ever made, the BT 44 and BT 52 being especially outstanding. Successful too, with 22 Grand Prix victories for drivers including Reutemann, Lauda, Watson and, of course, Nelson Piquet, who won two Drivers’ Championships in a Brabham. Like all great designers, Murray can think a very long way outside the box and the astonishing BT46B ‘fan car’ and his re-introduction of fuel stops to Grand Prix racing in 1983 bear witness to this.
