Chapter Five Publishing the Private, or The Economics of Experience Sometimes it has occurred to me that a man should not live more than he can record, as a farmer should not have a larger crop than he can gather in. – Boswell: The Hypochondriack Though the earth and all inferior creatures be common to all men, yet every man has a property in his own person; this nobody has any right to but himself – Locke: Second Treatise on Civil Government I In a finely tempered and persuasive record of her encounters with Strindberg in Switzerland in 1884, Hélène Welinder recalls a conversation in which his young compatriot’s sympathetic concern prompted the tired and harassed writer to describe the condition of almost permanent literary production in which he lived with unusual clarity. ‘I cannot rest, even if I would like to,’ he is reported as saying: I have to write for my daily bread, to maintain my wife and children, and in other respects, too, I cannot leave it alone. If I am travelling by train or whatever I’m doing, my mind works without ceasing, it grinds and grinds like a mill, and I cannot stop it. I get no peace before I have put it down on paper, but then I begin all over again, and so the misery goes on.1 Whether or not the image of the remorseless and insatiable mill reached this quotation as a direct transcription of Strindberg’s words is, of course, open to question. Nevertheless, even if it belongs entirely to Welinder’s reconstruction, it is apposite, for it not only features frequently in Strindberg’s later work as an image for the treadmill of conscience and the tenacity with which the past clings to the present;2 it also encompasses the suggestion that to write out what experience provides affords at best only temporary relief. -

Including films from Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland, this course will provide an introduction to some of the masterpieces of Scandinavian film from the Golden Age of silent film through the 2000s and to the culture of Scandinavia. PREMESSA AGLI ATTI DELLO OTTAVO REGIONAL SEAPOWER SYMPOSIUM DI VENEZIA del Capo di Stato Maggiore della Marina Il Capo di Stato Maggiore della Marina Il Regional Seapower Symposium (RSS) di Venezia è l’evento che da ormai quattordici anni rappresenta uno dei principali strumenti utilizzati dalla Marina Militare per contribuire allo sviluppo della partnership internazionale e contribuire alla sicurezza marittima globale. Se è vero che il numero ed il livello dei partecipanti costituiscono un’indicazione attendibile dell’importanza di un evento, l’ottava edizione del RSS - che ha visto rappresentanti di 44 Marine che operano nel Mediterraneo Allargato e 20 Organizzazioni Internazionali e realtà militari e civili incontrarsi nella cornice lagunare – può senza dubbio essere definita un successo. Partendo dalla convinzione che il Dialogo e la Cooperazione conferiscano alla Maritime Security un valore aggiunto, rappresentandone un vero e proprio fattore abilitante, i lavori delle sessioni hanno analizzato, da differenti prospettive, il contributo di questo fondamentale binomio a concetti di grande attualità nello scenario marittimo internazionale: la Maritime Situational Awareness, le Maritime Security Operations e la Maritime Capacity Building. L’efficace combinazione di tali concetti consente di conseguire la Maritime Security in senso lato, fattore – quest’ultimo - che sta influenzando e condizionando l’organizzazione operativa delle Marine di tutto il mondo. Le discussioni, gli interventi e gli eventi collaterali di questo Simposio hanno evidenziato l’importanza di una partnership forte ed attiva - sul versante internazionale come su quello nazionale - per un’efficace risposta e contrasto alle sfide che l’attuale ambiente marittimo in continua evoluzione ci pone: la pirateria, il terrorismo e tutte le altre attività illecite che trovano in mare il proprio spazio di manovra rappresentano gli esempi più attuali. -

Scandinavica Vol 52 No 2 2013 Stockholm’s Archipelago and Strindberg’s: Historical Reality and Modern Myth-Making Massimo Ciaravolo University of Florence Abstract The Stockholm Archipelago is ubiquitous in the prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction of August Strindberg. This article examines the interaction in Strindberg’s oeuvre between the city of Stockholm as civilized space and the wild space surrounding it, tracing the development of a literary myth of Eden in his work. Strindberg’s representations of the shifting relations between city and nature, it is argued, played (and still play) an important role in the cultural construction of mythologies of the loss of the wild space. The environments described in Strindberg’s texts are subject to changes, shifts and repetitions with variations, such that the archipelago in itself can be read as a mirror of the polyphony of points of view, the variability and the ambiguities we find in his oeuvre at large. The archipelago is ubiquitous in his oeuvre; it occurs in prose as well as in poetry and in drama, and it characterizes both fiction, autobiography and non-fiction (essays, letters and diaries). It can sometimes provide the setting to whole works, but in a series of other works it can be included as one of the settings, or even be mentioned peripherally. -

Centre and Periphery Spatial Strategies of Storytelling in Herodotus’ Histories Irene Elizabeth May Stone SID# 306192233 A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the degree of BaChelor of Arts, Honours in AnCient History 19,553 words 1 Synopsis This thesis explores aspects of Herodotus’ methods of narrative structure. Specifically, I identify what I suggest are ‘spatial’ strategies of storytelling. I argue that Herodotus at first locates and then deploys the ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’ existing in his many and diverse stories. I propose that this enables him to move with ease between these two narratival points and contend that this approach, used as a conduit for imparting various motifs and messages, illustrates his ability to engage in the abstract and demonstrates his organization of the opus into one cohesive whole. Herodotus’ employment of spatial strategies of storytelling ensures the Histories becomes a single interconnected entity rather than a work of disconnected or isolated tales exhibiting qualities both real and intangible. The thesis is divided into three chapters: Chapter One, ‘the Significance of the Nameless’, begins by investigating the use of the undisclosed individual abiding figuratively in the margins of Herodotus’ tales and argues that his use of them as literary tools moves them into closer focus as they emphasize key points and motifs for a listening audience. Chapter Two, ‘the Value of the Outsider’, examines geography in Herodotus’ Histories where the fantastic and peculiar, symbolized by the non‐Greek, reside literally on the edges of his world, and counterbalance the normalcy that dwell at its Greek centre. I also demonstrate the subtle relationship between the two, where both peripheries and inner central points become blurred by Herodotus’ own innate flexibility and his reversal of stereotypical roles. -

Även idéhistoriskt sett är Strindberg en guldgruva då han på väg mot sekelskiftet utvecklade ett starkt intresse för naturvetenskap, mystik och religion. Det är kring dessa ämnen jag valt att fokusera min uppsats. Strindberg har kännetecknats som trendmedveten och ivrigt strävande efter att framstå som upphovsman till nya svängningar inom litteraturen och har gått igenom flertalet faser av olika sorters inspiration, men syftet med denna uppsats är inte att analysera Strindberg som författare utan som idéförvaltare. Speciellt händelserik blev den kris Strindberg upplevde på 1890-talet då intrycken från religiösa verk blev betydande och samröret med ockulta sällskap blev frekvent. -
