VA - Salsa Gorda Romantica (2017) Salsa romántica arose at a time when classic, big-band salsa, of the kind popularized by Fania Records in the late 1970s and early 1980s, was taking a severe beating on the Latin record charts, owing to the merengue boom and the rise of Latin pop. To give the music broader commercial appeal, especially in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, emphasis was taken away from the hard-hitting orchestrations of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and focused mainly on the romantic, softer aspects of salsa, creating a mixture of earlier salsa brava and the ballad style. Salsa romántica was championed in recordings by, among others, Eddie Santiago, La India, La Palabra, Giro Lopez, Frankie Ruiz, Luis Enrique, Willie Gonzalez, Lalo Rodríguez, Tito Nieves, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Tito Rojas, and Jerry Rivera. Rodven Records, PolyGram, and RMM were some of the dominant labels during this era. 1. Si Te Dijeron - Gilberto Santa Rosa 5:20 2. Como Se Lo Explico Al Corazón - Víctor Manuelle 4:42 3. • Venezuela: Un Equilibrio Inestable
REVISTA DE CIENCIA POLÍTICA / VOLUMEN 39 / N° 2 / 2019 / 391-408 VENEZUELA: AN UNSTABLE EQUILIBRIUM Venezuela: un equilibrio inestable DIMITRIS PANTOULAS IESA Business School, Venezuela JENNIFER MCCOY Georgia State University, USA ABSTRACT Venezuela’s descent into the abyss deepened in 2018. Half of the country’s GDP has been lost in the last five years; poverty and income inequality have deepened, erasing the previous gains from the earlier years of the Bolivarian Revolution. Sig- nificant economic reforms failed to contain the hyperinflation, and emigration ac- celerated to reach three million people between 2014 and 2018, ten percent of the population. Politically, the government of Nicolás Maduro completed its authorita- rian turn following the failed Santo Domingo dialogue in February, and called for an early election in May 2018. Maduro’s victory amidst a partial opposition boycott and international condemnation set the stage for a major constitutional clash in January 2019, when the world was divided between acknowledging Maduro’s se- cond term or an opposition-declared interim president, Juan Guaido.

Cuba Rebecca Bodenheimer LAST MODIFIED: 26 MAY 2016 DOI: 10.1093/OBO/97801997578240184 Introduction This article treats folkloric and popular musics in Cuba; literature on classical music will be included in the article entitled “Classical Music in Cuba.” Music has long been a primary signifier of Cuban identity, both on and off the island. Among small nations, Cuba is almost unparalleled in its global musical reach, an influence that dates back to the international dissemination of the contradanza and habanera in the 19th century. The 1930s constituted a crucial decade of Cuban musical influence, as the world was introduced to the genre son (mislabeled internationally as “rumba”/”rhumba”) with the hit song “El Manicero.” In the 1990s Cuban music underwent yet another international renaissance, due to both the emergence of a neotraditional style of son related to the success of the Buena Vista Social Club project, and the crystallization of a new style of Cuban dance music called timba. Moreover, Afro Cuban folkloric music has enjoyed increased visibility and attention, and has become a focal point of the tourism industry that the Castro regime began to expand as a response to the devastating economic crisis precipitated by the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Research on Cuban music has a long and distinguished history that began in earnest in the late 1920s and 1930s with the publications of Cuba’s most celebrated scholar, Fernando Ortiz. Many of Ortiz’s students, such as musicologist Argeliers León and folklorist Miguel Barnet, went on to form the backbone of Cuban folklore research after the Revolution in 1959.

  • Introducing Leonardo Acosta, Music and Literary Critic
Vol. 5, No. 3, Spring 2008, 95-121 www.ncsu.edu/project/acontracorriente Introducing Leonardo Acosta, Music and Literary Critic Raúl A. Fernández University of California—Irvine Daniel Whitesell Irvine Valley College The recent awards bestowed on Leonardo Acosta, in particular Cuba’s Premio Nacional de Literatura (2006), come as no surprise to the authors of this article who have long been aware of the breadth and depth of Acosta’s essays on music and literature. To many, however, Acosta’s writing career has remained largely invisible. In part this is because Acosta’s major essays began to appear in the early 1980s when he was nearly fifty years old, a time by which most professional writers have established their careers; in part, because he had labored rather independently of any official Cuban institutions. As Acosta noted in his acceptance speech for the Premio Nacional de Literatura he had not been identified as “associated with any literary ‘group,’ or ‘revista,’ or ‘generation,’ or ‘cohort’. Neither had [he] participated in any aesthetic or ideological polemic affecting arts and letters…” His ‘invisibility” may also be in part because his writing has consisted primarily of ensayos, a genre Fernández 96 that attracts less attention from literary critics than poetry or prose narrative. Another contributing factor has been the diversity of the intellectual field Acosta defined for himself—he began as a professional musician, became a journalist, poet and short story writer for a decade, and then became a writer on music and literature. This career trajectory makes it difficult for any other single author to evaluate Acosta’s work as a whole.

Grupo Niche is undoubtedly the Colombian salsa band with greater national and international recognition.
