Hagan, Ph.D, Department of Political Science Morgantown, West Virginia 2011 Keywords: Operational Code Analysis, Leadership Trait Analysis, Political Psychology, Yugoslavia, Franjo Tudjman, Slobodan Milosevic Copyright 2011, Arian Spahiu ABSTRACT Franjo Tudjman’s and Slobodan Milosevic’s Operational Code and Leadership Trait Analysis Arian Spahiu Franjo Tudjman of Croatia and Slobodan Milosevic of Serbia played a prominent role in the Yugoslav politics and European politics during the 1990s, but the literature on them has advanced confusing interpretations of the two leaders whose political actions affected international politics. This dissertation is the first attempt at developing replicable measures of their psychological characteristics to inform our understanding of the role these two leaders played in Yugoslav and European politics. This dissertation examines the role of Tudjman’s and Milosevic’s psychological characteristics through at- a-distance analysis of their speeches, for Tudjman to the Croatian Parliament in the 1990s, and for Milosevic to different audiences. Specifically, this dissertation measures Tudjman’s and Milosevic’s operational code and five leadership traits associated with their operational code: conceptual complexity, distrust, need for power, belief in one’s ability to control events, and in-group bias. Through this analysis this dissertation clarifies the controversies in the descriptive histories written on Tudjman and Milosevic, and advance a more precise understanding of their approach to politics and foreign policy.     Athens Journal of History - Volume 1, Issue 3 – Pages 195-204 Traffic Connectivity in Croatia in the Past: The Dubrovnik Region Case By Marija Benić Penava This paper analyses the development of traffic routes in the far south of Croatia during the 19th and 20th century. Poor traffic connectivity was the consequence of traffic policy which was subordinated to the interests of Vienna in the Austro- Hungarian Monarchy, and after World War I, to Belgrade. Since the Dubrovnik region was oriented towards the sea, and since traditionally it had strong entrepreneurship and sea traffic that enabled great economic prosperity of Dubrovnik in the past centuries. Ships flying the flag of Sveti Vlaho (Saint Blaise, the patron saint of the city) were present in the Mediterranean and the world’s oceans, yet the service industry which Dubrovnik provided was completed by tourism only in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The perception of Dubrovnik as a world tourist destination was established in the first half of the 20th century and that could only be maintained by quality traffic routes. Therefore it was extremely important for the prosperity of the far south of Croatia to have and retain the best connectivity by railway as well as sea, land and air traffic. Introduction The transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century was a period of great economic change in Europe. The discovery of the Watt’s steam engine (1764) enabled mechanical transport, which neither the working animals nor the natural power, on which transportation was dependent previously, could not contest. The steam engine passed the milestone in the field of transport connection.

U nekim slučajevima, kao u Bosni i Hercegovini, uništenje arhivskoga gradiva bilo je dio ratne strategije. Uni­ štite povijest "drugoga " i na putu ste da vašeg proglašenog "neprijatelja " lišite verti­ kalnog kontinuiteta. Ova strategija je kako pogrešna, tako i štetna. Uništenje napulj- skog Arhiva u vrijeme Drugoga svjetskog rata, uništilo je povijest Napulja isto tako malo, kao što razaranje Orijentalnog instituta u Sarajevu može ukinuti povijest Bo­ sne i Hercegovine. Ali to je unatoč tomu velika nesreća. A kako povijest nije sasvim nezavisna, to nisu nikada niti izvori. Razaranje jedne arhivske zbirke šteti svima - ne samo određenoj grupi ili grupaciji.

The exhibition gives a historical view of book preparation and design in Croatia from the Middle Ages to the present day. It includes manuscript and printed books on different topics and themes, from mediaeval evangelistaries and missals to contemporary illustrated editions, print portfolios and artists’ books. Featured are the items that represent the best samples of artistic book design in Croatia with regard to their graphic design and harmonious relationship between the visual and graphic layout and content. The author of the exhibition is art historian Milan Pelc, who selected 60 items for presentation on panels. In addition to the introductory essay, the publication contains the catalogue of items with short descriptions. 4 Milan Pelc CENTURIES OF BOOK ART IN CROATIA Introduction Book art, a constituent part of written culture and Croatian cultural heritage as a whole, is ex- ceptionally rich and diverse. The essay does not pertain to entire Croatian literary heritage, but only to the part created on the historical Croatian territory and created by the Croats. It tries to investigate whether the war in former Yugoslavia supports or rebukes this theory. The investigation of Mansfield and Snyder best explains the conflict in Yugoslavia. It was a conflict between democratizing states, which does not rebuke democratic peace theory, but it does challenge it because events in former Yugoslavia show that democratic elections – and they are conditio sine qua non of democracy – do not prevent wars. Key words: democratic peace, Yugoslavia, war, elections, democratization. “When will this democracy pass, so that we can live like human beings once again?” (graffiti in Sarajevo during the War) Introduction According to Levy (1989:88), the proposition that democracies seldom, if ever, go to war against one another is “the closest thing we have to an empirical law in the stu- dy of international relations”. Similarly, according to Muravchik (1991:8), “the more democratic the world, the more peaceful it is likely to be. Various researchers have shown that war between democracies has almost never occurred in the modern world”. If above statements are correct, the democratic peace theory has practical significance. If democracies never go to war with one another, then the best prescription for interna- tional peace may be to encourage the spread of democracy.

    From Acceptance to Animosity: Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek Teodora Shek Brnardić [email protected] Last modified: March 2018 Introduction The emergence of a Croatian historiography of the Society of Jesus took place in the often virulently anti-Jesuit and anti-clerical atmosphere that was prevalent in Croatia in the second half of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. This period represented a historical crisis for the Jesuit order in Croatia, one that provoked controversies that were largely absent in the pre-suppression period, unlike in many other countries where such disputes had existed ever since the sixteenth century. In 1932, Miroslav Vanino, S.J. (1879–1965) launched a scholarly journal entitled Vrela i prinosi: Zbornik za povijest isusovačkog reda u hrvatskim krajevima (Sources and contributions: Collected papers on the history of the Jesuit order in the Croatian lands),1 which marked a turning point in the creation of a Croatian Jesuit historiography. In doing so, Vanino intended to revise the prevailing view of the pre-suppression Jesuits, who were often accused of behaving in an “anti-national” way. This latter view had become widespread among the educated Croatian elite, particularly during the Austro-Hungarian fin-de-siècle. Vanino’s journal accordingly sought to correct this politically biased interpretation of the Jesuits’ role in Croatian history with articles written by both Jesuit and non-Jesuit contributors.2 The journal would provide the foundation for a source-based, critical history of the Society of Jesus in the Croatian lands and of its relations with the Croats.

Could you tell me when and where you were born and then we'll talk a little bit about your family, your parents. HANSEN: I was born in 1946 in Chicago. My family is originally from Chicago, both parents born there. My father was raised on the West Side, in the Austin neighborhood, and my mother on the South Side. On my father's side, his family on his father's side came from Norway, immigrants who came to the United States in the mid-1800s, I guess. I have heard the story of his grandmother coming as a 13-year-old and going into service with a Chicago family. His own father was a high school principal in Chicago. His father and all his uncles graduated from Northwestern University and went into a variety of professioneducation, law, pharmacy. Q: With an immigrant family, this is sort of remarkable that they would be within a relatively short time going to Northwestern, being a high school principal and in other professions. It tries to investigate whether the war in former Yugoslavia supports or rebukes this theory. The investigation of Mansfield and Snyder best explains the conflict in Yugoslavia. It was a conflict between democratizing states, which does not rebuke democratic peace theory, but it does challenge it because events in former Yugoslavia show that democratic elections – and they are conditio sine qua non of democracy – do not prevent wars. Key words: democratic peace, Yugoslavia, war, elections, democratization. “When will this democracy pass, so that we can live like human beings once again?” (graffiti in Sarajevo during the War) Introduction According to Levy (1989:88), the proposition that democracies seldom, if ever, go to war against one another is “the closest thing we have to an empirical law in the stu- dy of international relations”. Similarly, according to Muravchik (1991:8), “the more democratic the world, the more peaceful it is likely to be. Various researchers have shown that war between democracies has almost never occurred in the modern world”. If above statements are correct, the democratic peace theory has practical significance. If democracies never go to war with one another, then the best prescription for interna- tional peace may be to encourage the spread of democracy.
