Dear Parents… Last week we celebrated Internet Safety Day where the children learnt about being safe online. The children are currently participating in our school competition to design a poster to inform others of strategies to be safe online. After half term we are having South West Grid for Learning visiting our school to work with our older pupils to educate them further about online safety. Following this there will be a parent session on Monday 25th February 2019 at 5.30 pm. We hope that you are able to join us for this session. In the meantime help your child to keep safe by sharing with them the online safety reporting button - CEOP. You will see this on lots of websites. There is also support for children through Childline if they are concerned about bullying. Support your child to speak out!

Many thanks for your support with reporting to the office if your child is off poorly and unfit for school. It is great to see we now have a few classes that have achieved 100% attendance. Keep this up. Attendance at school is very important to help children achieve and progress positively.

On Thursday we welcomed many Parents/Carers to our Open Afternoon focused around Reading. It was great to see children and parents alike enjoying sharing books and participating in a range of activities. Developing a love of reading and sharing with our loved ones is so important to develop their vocabulary and a lifelong enjoyment.

Half term is next week the 18th February we hope that you enjoy some family time together. We are currently planning lots of exciting activities for the next half term including World Book Day and participating in St Piran’s Day celebrations. We will keep you up to date with the plans for these and how parents can get involved.

This week you have received a letter with details regarding our parent annual questionnaires. Please take the time to complete this questionnaire from the link on school website as we value your views and thoughts to work together to make our school even better.

Kind regards Mrs Marie Taylor Head Teacher

If your child is repeatedly poorly or unwell the School Nurse and Parent Support Advisor may be able to help you. Contact the office and we can arrange an appointment for you. If your child has a cough or cold staff will ensure they look after them and we can build resilience in our children. Non prescribed medicine can be given before school and we are happy for parents to come in at lunch time to give additional medicine to children if needed.

Reporting of absences Reporting your child’s absence is really easy here, now only two ways:

1. Call 01637 880272 and press 1 to leave your message with a specific reason, please do not continue on the telephone to the school answer phone as these messages will not be picked up in time so you will get a call to ask why your child is absent.

2. The Office/Attendance Dojo account is a new way you can report your child as absent through a Dojo message, please ensure that a specific reason is given. Reasons for absence such as ‘ill’, ‘unwell’, ‘poorly’ are not adequate explanations. Please do not send messages to the class teacher in future regarding your child’s absence. This includes any external appointments your child may have, please ensure you bring in the original appointment letter to the school office so we have one for filing for Attendance audit purposes.

School Times The school day begins at 8.45am with registration at 8.50am. Please ensure your child arrives at school promptly. The register closes at 8.55 am. If you arrive after 8.55 am up until 9.10 am this will be recorded as late. If you arrive after 9.10 am this will be recorded as unauthorised session. Repeated number of unauthorised sessions will result in the Education Welfare Officers’ involvement.

Indoor Rowing

On Wednesday 6th of February 10 Year 6 boys and 10 Year 6 girls went to Treviglas ready to compete in an indoor rowing competition. There were several teams from all over Newquay. When we arrived, we all had a practice, the boys then went into individual rowing races and Oli Holloway came 3rd, Harrison Bough came 2nd and Evan Platt took 1st place. It was then the turn of the girls with Megan Walmsley taking 2nd and Neve Holyoak coming 3rd. Overall in the individual rowing as a team- we came 1st. The competition then came to the relay and we put two strong teams forward. Both teams gave it their very best and rowed their hearts out-it resulted in our A team taking 2nd. This was such a great event and we all had a fantastic time. By Megan Walmsley and Jess Mills.

This week’s staff Wall of Fame…

Miss Power-Brown Year 1 Class: Mawgan Porth

Experience:This is my first year at St Columb Major Academy. Throughout my degree I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of schools as a trainee teacher and a TA. For my 2nd year placement I went to work in a school in East London, which was a great experience! My specialism at university was English. Working at St Columb Major with so many supportive people has been great so far!

Qualifications: Bachelor of Education (hons) Primary Education (English)

Favourite subjects at school: I really enjoyed Drama, Music and Creative Writing at school. Taking part in school productions, performing with the school orchestra and playing music with my friends were my favourite things to do. I also loved learning about History!

Interests/Hobbies:During my spare time I love to be at the beach, no matter what season it is. I spend most of my time outdoors whether it is walking around the countryside, cycling, learning how to surf or swimming in the sea. I love going on holiday and spending time exploring different countries - particularly with lots of sunshine! I also enjoy singing and playing the piano and try my best to practice at home.

Did you know? I am half Irish, which is where my name ‘Power’ comes from.

Lost Property items this week…

FOSCA purchase…

We are very excited this week as the lego has arrived! Huge thanks to FOSCA!

If you can help in any way to help the Friends run fundraising and events please contact the school. Many thanks.

EYFS new wet weather gear…

Over the last few weeks the Early Years children have been enjoying trying out the new wet weather clothing we have purchased. They are having endless fun jumping in the puddles and exploring in the mud kitchen

PSHE in Year 2…

In Year 2 we have been doing lots of talk about being kind to each other and using kind words to make each other feel good and to make sure we include everyone in our games. We have also been talking about how we are different and the same - what makes us different? What is special about us and what can we do that others may not be able to? The children discussed and came up with some fantastic idea sharing around what is different about all of us including what we look like, what we can do, where we are from and how our families are all different too. We also talked about our talents, what we are good at - through which we discovered that Mrs Gidley can beat box as can Aubrey!

E-safety…

During E-Safety day last Tuesday Lusty Glaze learnt about the world of the internet, social media, gaming and how to keep ourselves safe when online. After studying a short video clip we discussed how different scenarios made us feel and what we should do if we feel uncomfortable about anything we see or experience online. Examples of positive and negative experiences led to us recognising that there is a common theme of communication and working together to ensure we have a safe approach to being online. We have created a jigsaw to demonstrate how we can work together to stay safe online. To finish our learning, as a school we learnt an internet song about a gran who doesn't know what to do on her brand new computer . . . . why not ask the children to sing it to you.

Parent Support Advisor…

Parent Support Advisor-Penny Cherry

What is a Parent Support Advisor?

A Parent Support Advisor (PSA), is able to help, support and advise parents and carers who have any worries or concerns about their children, school life or personal circumstances. A Parent Support Advisor offers the promise of a listening ear, appropriate support and signposting for those in need.

What could our PSA help me with?

· Children moving to another school

· Supporting parents in meetings at school

· Providing advice and supporting parents with children’s behavioural/additional needs

· Signposting and supporting parents engaging with external agencies

· Liaising with parents and children to resolve attendance issues

· Working on a one to one or small group of children to support them with learning, confidence,

self esteem.

· Any other issue you may have that requires additional support

Why might you need to use the PSA?

My child is having difficulties settling in at school… My child is anxious about school… My child’s behaviour is difficult to control… I am worried about my child starting school… I just need someone I can talk to… I’m really worried about my son/daughter’s self-esteem… I would like to know who else I could talk to about my situation…

How do I contact the PSA?

Phone the main office and ask for an appointment with our PSA or email [email protected]

Keeping everyone safe…

Looking after your child’s health …
