Résumé : Dans notre étude, la biosurveillance de la lagune de Tunis a été réalisée durant une année en employant une approche combinant les analyses chimiques et biologiques et en utilisant la palourde Ruditapes decussatus comme espèce bioindicatrice. Cette approche a permis de mettre en évidence la forte contamination de la lagune de Tunis par les métaux traces et les hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques (HAPs). La variation saisonnière des niveaux de bioaccumulation de ces contaminant par la palourde s’avère être fortement associée aux changements des paramètres physico-chimiques du milieu et aux processus physiologiques de l’animal. L’étude de la réponse biologique basée sur l’utilisation d’une batterie de biomarqueurs d’exposition et d’effet situés à différents niveaux de l’organisation biologique : moléculaire (l’expression de cinq gènes d’intérêt), biochimique (les activités benzo(a)pyrène hydroxylase, glutathion S-transférase, acétylcholinestérase, catalase et taux de malondialdéhyde) et tissulaire (altérations histopathologiques), a permis de mettre en évidence une modulation des processus de défense contre les perturbations induites par la pollution et l’identification des altérations histopathologiques (structurales) au niveau des branchies et de la glande digestive impliquant un impact sévère des contaminants sur l’état de santé de la palourde. L’étude des interactions spatio-temporelles entre les facteurs abiotiques et biotiques a permis d’identifier la température et la reproduction comme paramètres principaux affectant la réponse biochimique de défense et d’effet. L’analyse en composante principale (ACP), regroupant tous les paramètres analysés pendant le printemps, nous a permis d’identifié le site Z2 comme le site le plus affecté par la pollution. Dans un second temps, le benzo(a)pyrène (BaP), déjà identifié dans la lagune de Tunis, a été employé dans des conditions contrôlées au laboratoire afin de caractériser les réponses moléculaires et biochimiques chez les bivalves (Ruditapes philippinarum et Crassostrea gigas) face à des expositions subaiguës et aiguës à ce contaminant. Cette étude nous a permis d’identifier une modulation des biomarqueurs biochimiques de métabolisation, de stress oxydant et de neurotoxicité et de l’expression des gènes impliqués dans les processus de métabolisation, de respiration mitochondriale, de défense antioxydante, de reproduction et de défense immunitaire. L’analyse de l’altération de l’ADN a révélé un pouvoir génotoxique précoce et élevé du BaP chez les deux bivalves. Title : Study of the marine pollution by hydrocarbons and characterization of their biochemical and molecular effects on clam Ruditapes sp. Abstract : Firstly, biomonitoring of Tunis lagoon was conducted during one year using an approach combining chemicals and biological analyses and the bioindicator species Ruditapes decussatus. This approach highlighted the high contamination of the Tunis lagoon by trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Seasonal variation of contaminant bioaccumulation levels in clam was found to be strongly associated with physicochemical changes in surrounding environment and physiological processes in organism. Biological responses investigated through a battery of exposure and effect biomarkers located at different levels of biological organisation: molecular (expression of five genes), biochemical (benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylase, glutathione S-transferase, acetylcholinesterase and catalase activities and malondialdehyde concentration) and tissular (histopathological damages), demonstrated a defense process modulation by pollution and showed histopathological alterations in gills and digestive gland involving severe impact of contaminants on health state of clam. The study of spatiotemporal interactions between abiotic and biotic factors identified temperature and reproduction as main parameters affecting defense and effect biochemical response. The principal component analysis (PCA), using all analyzed parameters during the spring, allowed to identify site Z2 as the most affected by pollution. Secondly, benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), already identified in Tunis lagoon, was used in controlled conditions at the laboratory in order to characterize the molecular and biochemical responses in bivalves (Ruditapes philippinarum and Crassostrea gigas) facing a subacute and acute exposures to this contaminant. This study showed a modulation of biochemical biomarkers of metabolism, oxidative stress and neurotoxicity and expression of genes involved in process of metabolisation, mitochondrial respiration, antioxidant defense, reproduction and immune defense. The analysis of DNA damages revealed a high and early genotoxicity effect of BaP in both bivalves.     Potential Species of Conservation Concern for the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs Plan Revision Potential Species of Conservation Concern for the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs Plan Revision Including Botanical and Animal Species April 24, 2014 DRAFT 1 Potential Species of Conservation Concern for the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs Plan Revision Potential Plant Species of Conservation Concern The Species of Conservation Concern is a list of rare plant species, other than federally listed species, that occur within the plan area for which the Regional Forester has determined there is a substantial concern regarding the species’ capability to persist in the plan area over the long- term. Within the directives, two separate categories were identified for development of the list. Based on selected criteria, certain species must be included on the list of potential species of conservation concern (SCC). Other species could also be included with consideration of additional criteria. Based on initial review with the Regional Forester the potential list is restricted to species with occurrence records on either of the two forest units within the last 50 years. In order to be consistent with other forests within the region all the botanical taxonomy is consistent with the NatureServe web site, April 2014. Process for Species Inclusion All species with a global rank of G1, G2, T1, T2 or variations such as G1G2 (G/T 1-2must be included on the potential list. This list of appropriate plant species was derived from three separate data sources. The GIS Biotics database, maintained by the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, was queried for all the rare plant species with the appropriate global rank within the 18-county area surrounding the Nantahala and Pisgah NFs.

Central to many of these fields of study is the dependence on a robust taxonomic framework for accurate communication relating to species diversity and associated attributes. Despite a huge body of taxonomic work since Linnaeus, there has never been a single, comprehensive taxonomic summary of all the species of crayfish of the world. There has also been an abundance of recent taxonomic work in terms of new species descriptions and taxonomic insights gained from a variety of phylogenetic studies. Here we gather diverse taxonomic and phylogenetic information into a single resource. We develop an updated clas- sification system that includes all the crayfishes worldwide and taxonomic changes to better reflect the current phylogenetic knowledge of the group. We also include all the fossil crayfish taxa for a complete classification of extant and extinct crayfishes.

    Southern Forest Resource Assessment Draft Report www.srs.fs.fed.us/sustain AQUA-5: Aquatic Animals and their Habitats Jim Herrig and Peggy Shute Southern Region, USDA Forest Service and Tennessee Valley Authority respectively What are the history, status, and likely future of aquatic habitats and species in the South? 1 Key Findings • Sediments, introduced into aquatic systems above natural, background levels, have adverse impacts on animal species in all seven taxonomic groups considered in this Assessment • The aquatic communities of southeastern United States are globally significant. Many are very narrow endemics and subject to extinction from relatively minor habitat losses. • Habitat barriers created by dams on major rivers have produced isolated populations of many southern aquatic animals. Some species occupy so little of their former range that they are vulnerable to extinction as described for the narrowly endemic species. Some others, mainly larger river animals, have become extinct because of habitat alterations. Current programs have improved conditions in some of the tailwaters. • In some areas aquatic habitats have improved and reintroduction or augmentation supported by captive breeding programs may improve the recovery potential for some species. • Some groundwater systems are being dewatered, threatening unique aquatic communities. Careful aquifer management will be necessary for these aquatic communities. • Certain aquatic species (for example, the flatwoods salamander) require ephemeral ponds to complete their life cycles. Restoration and protection of ephemeral ponds is essential to the conservation of these animals. • Gaps in our scientific knowledge about southern aquatic species are monumental. Research of many types is urgently needed. • In the South, much of the habitat for rare aquatic species is not controlled by Federal or State governments.
