  • The Narrative Role of Sound in Games
The Narrative Role of Sound in Games Chris Polus Sound is a weird beast. You mostly can’t see it. It is not really tangible. Yet, it is everywhere. It is much easier to close your eyes if you don’t want to see some- thing than to close your ears if you don’t want to hear something. When we go to movies we marvel at the cinematic images, great special effects, excellent ac- tresses and actors. Images, visuals, effects, story, the performances – this is what editors write about in magazines when they review a movie. Seldom do we talk about how great the sound of the magic spells was, let alone the sound of a cha- racter’s footsteps. Sound, for the most part, is just there. Invisible. Unnoticed. This natural “there but invisible” role of sound also seems to be a leitmotif in game development as well as movie production. Sound in many cases is merely an afterthought. Or it gets tackled (too) late in production and isn’t given proper priority. And yet, try watching a movie with the sound turned off. It seems dis- tant. Uninteresting. Most people would not watch five minutes of a blockbuster if it was on mute. Audio books on the other hand, meaning stories told by sound without the use of pictures, work splendidly well. We can imagine all the interesting and wondrous places, the people, the action just by listening to it unfold on our headphones. Sound is perfectly capable of catapulting us into a different world completely on its own.

Yesterday’s marvel is tomorrow’s museum piece. The same applies to games, although it is not just the core game technology that continues to develop at breakneck speed. The human machine interfaces we use to interact with games are becoming more sophisticated and at the same time, easier to use. The Wii Balance Board™ and the MotionPlus™, Microsoft’s Project Natal and Sony’s PlayStation® Eye are all reinventing how we interact with games, and in turn this is playing part in a greater shift.

  • Game Narrative Review
Game Narrative Review ==================== Your name: Kate Olguin Your school: Worcester Polytechnic Institute Your email: [email protected] Month/Year you submitted this review: December 2018 ==================== Game Title: What Remains of Edith Finch Platform: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, XBox One Genre: Mystery Adventure/Walking Simulator Release Date: April 25, 2017 Developer: Giant Sparrow Publisher: Annapurna Interactive Game Writer/Creative Director/Narrative Designer: Ian Dallas Overview What Remains of Edith Finch is a hauntingly beautiful game that explores of life, death, and acceptance, and how one family deals with (or in some cases, doesn’t deal with) all 3. The Finch family is a creative and talented family of people who live in a gigantic, twisted mansion in the Pacific Northwest. Despite their skills and generally happy livelihoods, the Finches shoulder a terrible burden. Legend tells that the family is afflicted by a terrible curse--a curse that takes the lives of family members well before their time. Over the years, the family curse has claimed the lives of Finches young and old alike, until late 2016, when only one Finch remains. The player controls Edith, the last surviving Finch, as she travels back to her childhood home, the mansion where Finches lived and died for almost a century. Edith, whose (now deceased) mother had taken her away from the house as a child, has returned to find out the truth behind the tragedies that befell her family for as long as they can remember, the stories her mother would never let her hear. When Edith finds clues about the deaths of her deceased relatives, the player plays through the last moments of these relatives’ lives.

  • GAMING GLOBAL a Report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with Assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner
GAMING GLOBAL A report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner I Executive Summary The Gaming Global report explores the games environment in: five EU countries, • Finland • France • Germany • Poland • UK three non-EU countries, • Brazil • Russia • Republic of Korea and one non-European region. • East Asia It takes a culturally-focused approach, offers examples of innovative work, and makes the case for British Council’s engagement with the games sector, both as an entertainment and leisure sector, and as a culturally-productive contributor to the arts. What does the international landscape for gaming look like? In economic terms, the international video games market was worth approximately $75.5 billion in 2013, and will grow to almost $103 billion by 2017. In the UK video games are the most valuable purchased entertainment market, outstripping cinema, recorded music and DVDs. UK developers make a significant contribution in many formats and spaces, as do developers across the EU. Beyond the EU, there are established industries in a number of countries (notably Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand) who access international markets, with new entrants such as China and Brazil moving in that direction. Video games are almost always categorised as part of the creative economy, situating them within the scope of investment and promotion by a number of governments. Many countries draw on UK models of policy, although different countries take games either more or less seriously in terms of their cultural significance. The games industry tends to receive innovation funding, with money available through focused programmes.
