How Asexuality Is Represented in Popular Culture
WHEN THE INVISIBLE BECOME VISIBLE: HOW ASEXUALITY IS REPRESENTED IN POPULAR CULTURE A Thesis submitted to the faculty of s ' San Francisco State University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for H the Degree rfk? Master of Arts In Human Sexuality Studies by Darren Jacob Tokheim San Francisco, California May 2018 Copyright by Darren Jacob Tokheim 2018 WHEN THE INVISIBLE BECOME VISIBLE: HOW ASEXUALITY IS REPRESENTED IN POPULAR CULTURE Darren Jacob Tokheim San Francisco, California 2018 Asexuality is largely misunderstood in mainstream society. Part of this misunderstanding is due to how asexuality has been portrayed in popular culture. This thesis is a content analysis of representations of asexual characters in popular culture, including television, film, comics, and podcasts, and how this representation has changed over time. Specifically, this work finds that early depictions of asexual characters, from the mid- 2000’s, were subjected to common negative stereotypes surrounding asexuality, and that more recent depictions, from the mid-2010’s, have treated asexuality as a valid sexual orientation worthy of attention. However, as asexuality has become more accepted, the representations of asexuality remain few and far between. I certify that the Abstract is a correct representation of the content of this thesis. 6 |2 s | | % Y Chair, Thesis Committee Date CERTIFICATION OF APPROVAL I certify that I have read When the Invisible Become Visible: How Asexuality is Represented in Popular Culture by Darren Jacob Tokheim, and that in my opinion this work meets the criteria for approving a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Master of Arts in Human Sexuality Studies at San Francisco State University. -

Bojack Horseman, Or the Exhaustion of Postmodernism and the Envisioning of a Creative Way Out
Creativity studies ISSN 2345-0479 / eISSN 2345-0487 2019 Volume 12 Issue 2: 291–300 https://doi.org/10.3846/cs.2019.10845 BOJACK HORSEMAN, OR THE EXHAUSTION OF POSTMODERNISM AND THE ENVISIONING OF A CREATIVE WAY OUT Raúl SÁNCHEZ SAURA* Eton College, Modern Languages and Cultures Department, Windsor, Berkshire SL4 6DW, England, United Kingdom Received 2 January 2019; accepted 22 October 2019 Abstract. Postmodernism, as a hegemon, has determined the cultural coordinates of audiovisual products in the last decades. Since 2008, some shows have creatively questioned its main principles, such as superficiality, cynicism-bordering irony and the lack of alternative to all this (Francis Fuku- yama’s end of history). BoJack Horseman (executive producers Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, Blair Fetter, Jane Wiseman, Will Arnett, Aaron Paul and Andy Weill, 2014–2019), the Netflix series, follows the struggles in the life of the eponymous character, star of the 1990s sitcom Horsin’ Around, and his exhaustion from the vacuity of life in Hollywood, United States. Surrounded by his peculiar entourage, viewers witness all sorts of unimportant nonsense and risible statements to ultimately engage in the story and meet old characters under a new light. After many seasons, our understanding of them changes and we are forced to revaluate our consideration of them, engaging sympathetically and leaving behind an individualist detachment some authors, like David Foster Wallace, criticised in the past. This only comes to happen because of the creative use of animation, the script and characters. Keywords: BoJack Horseman, creativity, cynicism, Fukuyamaism, hegemony, irony, postmodernism. Introduction. Back in the 1990s: cynicism and immovability in animated series As a Netflix show on air since 2014, BoJack Horseman belongs to the post-2008 context of exhaustion from some of the main tenants of the postmodern hegemony. -

Chater explores the ways in which editing, narrative, camera movement, and other elements display the relationship between the two shows that is an essential part of the title character. Louise Fair 7/19 the Greatest Age Group of Responses Was Aged 18
Louise Fair 7/19 The greatest age group of responses was aged 18-25, with a fair percentage from the 26-35 group, and a few responses from the 36-50 bracket. This combats the asexual stereotype that the community is only comprised of teenage girls who are ‘too young to know’ or trying to be trendy. Whilst 8.6% of the sample were unsure about their asexuality, a greater percentage questioned their aromanticism. This may suggest that aromanticism is even less represented, and thus it is more confusing to distinguish between romantic and other attraction. Although over half the respondents felt personally included within the LGBT+ community, more were unsure in real application, partially due to discrimination within the LGBT+ community. How do you know without trying ___? You're just too young to know. You're a late bloomer/You'll find someone in the future. That's not a real orientation/You're closeted gay. So you don't believe in love? You're just following a trend/attempting to be LGBT. Suggesting a medical or traumatic explanation. A suggestion that they are broken, or inhuman/it is unfortunate. The majority of people that come out as A-spec are often met with the harmful suggestion that this is something negative, or simply explained through a medical or trauma related reason. This lends itself to the idea that A-spec people are broken or 59.8% of respondents admitted that they felt alone or broken in some way due to confused, and can be ‘cured’ through hormonal therapy or finding ‘The Right One’. -
Personal Issues and Struggles in Life: a Thematic Analysis of Bojack Horseman
Personal Issues and Struggles in Life: A Thematic analysis of Bojack Horseman University of Oulu Faculty of Humanities English Language Bachelors Thesis Annu Riekki 2021 1 Abstract Bojack Horseman is a Netflix original TV-series that was first published in 2014 and aired its final season in 2020. The series addresses different societal themes, of which five will be analyzed in this thesis. The themes that were chosen are nihilism, depression, addiction, self-image, and being seen. The themes will be analyzed applying thematic analysis. Mainly this thesis will be presenting the themes through different characters’ actions, thoughts, and dialogue. The main point is to show how the characters’ actions bring out the reoccurring themes in the show. The analysis of this thesis is based on the aspects of the themes that the characters establish. The titular main character, Bojack Horseman, is in the most important role in the analysis. Bojack brings out with his actions for example different symptoms of depression and their effects on his life. In addition, Bojack often suffers from existential crisis and feels that his life or existence does not have any profound meaning. Bojack also suffers from drug and alcohol addiction which causes more and more difficulties in his life. Bojack’s behavior during the series often also affects other char- acters’ lives. A flashback in the series shows how Bojack teaches the child actor Sarah Lynn that she has to do everything she can to maintain the attention of her audience. This causes Sarah Lynn to develop a drug addiction and issues with her self-image. -
