The Penelopiad is about a woman named Penelope. She is looking back on her life after she has died.
Penelope has a difficult relationship with her parents. Her mother doesn’t pay attention to her and her father tried to kill her when she was a child.
Penelope’s husband is Odysseus. They have a son together whose name is Telemachus.
One day, Odysseus goes to war against another country, and leaves Penelope alone. She knows he will come back, but most people think he is missing.
Suitors try to marry Penelope to take Odysseus’ place on the throne. She does not want to marry any of them, so she tricks them. She says she will choose someone to marry once she is finished weaving a shroud, but at night, she and the Maids unravel the shroud so it is never completed.
When Odysseus comes back home, he is wearing a disguise. He does not know that Penelope has been working with the Maids. He thinks they have been encouraging the suitors, and he has them killed.
