Politisch exponierte Lage Schaffhausen liegt keine 50 km nördlich von Zürich, hat aber in der Reformationsgeschichte eine eigene Entwicklung durchlaufen. Stadt und Landschaft Schaffhausen wurden 1501 als zwölfter Ort in die Eidgenossenschaft aufgenommen, also nur zwei Jahrzehnte vor der Reformation. Durch seine geographische Lage war Schaff- hausen politisch stark exponiert. Es liegt nördlich des Rheins; mit Zürich war es mit einer schmalen Rheingrenze verbunden, auf mehr als drei Seiten von habsburgischen Landen umgeben, in de- nen die Reformation nicht Fuß fasste, mit deren Bevölkerung je- doch ein reger Handelsverkehr und viele persönliche Beziehungen bestanden. Die Landschaftsgebiete wurden durch Kauf erworben und hatten oft keine natürlichen Grenzen. Die bischöfliche Herr- schaft Neunkirch-Hallau kam erst 1525 zu Schaffhausen. De vorm waarin ze zijn overgeleverd varieert van een geautoriseerde gedrukte versie tot een rommelig kladje vol doorhalingen. Tot die laatste categorie horen elf brieven van de jurist Bonifacius Amerbach, hoogleraar aan de universiteit van Bazel. Van Erasmus ontving hij in deze periode eenzelfde aantal eigenhandig geschreven brieven en nog twee waarvan alleen kopieën bekend zijn. Al deze brieven dragen het karakter van privé-correspondentie. Dat laatste geldt bij uitstek voor hun brieven over Erasmius Froben, de jongste zoon van de overleden drukker Johann Froben en petekind van Erasmus. De ongeveer vijftienjarige jongen had enige tijd bij zijn peetvader in Freiburg doorgebracht en was vervolgens door zijn beduidend oudere halfbroer Hieronymus weer meegenomen naar Bazel. Blijkbaar liepen de meningen uiteen hoe de verdere opleiding van Erasmius eruit moest zien. Erasmus ziet hem het liefst in Leuven studeren, maar de familie heeft daar andere gedachten over. Helemaal zeker van zijn zaak is ook Erasmus zelf niet. Terug in Bazel laat de jongen niets van zich horen en blijkens brief 2229 had hij een briefje dat de grote geleerde aan hem had geschreven in Freiburg laten liggen. -

Letter-Writing in the Early Swiss Reformation: Zwingli's Neglected Correspondence (Nigel Harris, Zürich, 7th May 2019) Is a letter a private document? Well, yes; or so I and probably all of us were brought up to believe. Certainly to this day, if a letter arrives at home addressed to my wife or to one of our children, I will on principle never open it – even if I know who it’s from and what it’s likely to contain. It just seems wrong. It seems, literally, none of my business. And so my instinct always tells me just not to do it. With some other kinds of communication, of course, the public/private divide is less clear cut. When I send an e-mail, for example, I can address a great many people at once. Some of them I probably will not know personally. And sometimes, of course, I might end up sending an e-mail by mistake to someone I am very keen actually shouldn’t read it. Mistaking the ‘reply’ button for the ‘reply to all’ button can, as we all know, get you into a lot of trouble. We’ve probably all been there. And with still more modern forms of ‘social’ media, such as Facebook and Twitter, this public/private divide can be still more problematic – so much so, indeed, that I at least shy away from them entirely. The idea of details about my private thoughts or my social and family life being shared, in principle, with absolutely anybody fills me with horror. What on earth has it got to do with anyone else? And, anyway, what gives me the right to imagine that other people are interested in what I’m doing or thinking? Isn’t that just arrogant? Well, I suppose that kind of attitude is a generational thing, and I’m showing my age in adopting it. -

Eerst volgt de lijst die ontleent is aan Van Braght zijn boeken, daarna de naamlijst die samengesteld is door C. Kraybill. Kraybill schrijft: Het totale aantal Doopsgezinde martelaren is onbekend. Het bijhouden van gegevens in de verschillende regio's van het Europa van de 16e eeuw was inconsistent. In sommige gebieden werden verslagen bijgehouden maar gingen later verloren of vernietigd. In andere gebieden werden er in de eerste plaats geen records bijgehouden. Er zijn ook plaatsen waar we alleen nummers of namen van martelaren hebben zonder verdere details. De meest uitgebreide martelaarsinformatie die vandaag beschikbaar is, komt uit Vlaanderen en Nederland. Dit betekent niet dat meer mensen op die plaatsen werden gemarteld dan elders. -

Other inspiring books are available at: www.PrimitiveChristianity.org Introduction I well remember the first time I faced the stark realization that I was a Mennonite and different. My fourth-grade friend, Gregory, and I were riding home from public school on the bus. We were talking about our future, how we would always be friends and do things together when we grew up. Then he enthusiastically began to describe activities that from my upbringing I knew to be worldly. Desperate to save our lifelong friendship, I turned to Gregory and said, “You will have to leave your church and become a Mennonite when you grow up.” Thus, the inevitability of our way of life impressed itself on my eight-year-old mind. A year later I made my decision to follow Christ. Of course, Gregory never joined my church, and I do not even know his whereabouts today. The theme of separation from the world ran strong in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania where I grew up. But I wrongly assumed that, except for our plainness, we believed the same things that other Christians believed. Then one evening at the Chambersburg Mennonite Church, where I was a member, a visiting speaker jolted me with a graphic picture of my martyr heritage. -

^ Unica Oblatio Christi: Eucharistie Sacrifice and the first Zurich Disputation KEITH D. LEWIS S ummary: The First Zurich Disputation (January 29th, 1523) between Ulrich Zwingli and Johann Faber was the earliest Reformation-era public debate of the doctrine of the eucharistie sacrifice. While Zwingli was at an early and relatively fluid stage in his rejection of eucharistie sacrifice, Faber's defense employed not only traditional scholastic sources but other authoritative supports previously unused in the defense of doctrine. Never- theless, the polemical atmosphere of the exchange between the two both during and after the disputation precluded true clarity andpotential common ground on this issue. For ten long years, our opponents have written many books asserting that the mass is a sacrifice, and yet not one of them has defined what sacrifice is or is not [Philip Melanchthon, Apologia Confessionis XXIV, XII, 15 (1531)]. The fact that Swiss reformer Ulrich Zwingli rejected any notion of eucharistie sacrifice and insisted on a strictly anamnetic eucharist early-on in his emer- gence as a reformer, is well-known. Yet for all that has been written concerning Zwingli' s eucharistie theology,^ surprisingly little attention has been paid to the actual circumstances of his initial rejection of the doctrine of eucharistie sacrifice in the theological context of the First Zurich Disputation of January 29th, 1523, during which the vicar-general of the diocese of Constance Johann Faber ( 1478-1541) emerged as an impromptu and reluctant debating opponent to ZwingH, with whom Faber had been on friendly terms. This is especially surprising, when one considers that the Zurich meeting appears to have been the first public debate in the sixteenth century between a controversial theologian and a major reformation personality concerning the doctrine of eucharistie sacrifice. -

The Myth of the Swiss Lutherans: Martin Bucer and the Eucharistic Controversy in Bern In 1842, Carl Hundeshagen published Die Conflicte des Zwinglianismus, Lu- thertums und Calvinismus in der Bernischen Landeskirche von 1532-1558.' The book describes the doctrinal strife within Bern and the effects of that strife on the relationship of the Bernese church with those of Geneva and Zu- rich. The conflicts centered on two issues: the Lord's Supper, and the inde- pendence of the church from state control. As the title implies, Hundeshagen identified the three positions in the controversy as Zwinglian (as represented by Zurich and one of the factions in Bern), Calvinist (Geneva and Vaud), and Lutheran (the dominant faction in Bern during the later 1530s and 1540s). It is difficult to overestimate the impact of Hundeshagen's book.
