Eerst volgt de lijst die ontleent is aan Van Braght zijn boeken, daarna de naamlijst die samengesteld is door C. Kraybill. Kraybill schrijft: Het totale aantal Doopsgezinde martelaren is onbekend. Het bijhouden van gegevens in de verschillende regio's van het Europa van de 16e eeuw was inconsistent. In sommige gebieden werden verslagen bijgehouden maar gingen later verloren of vernietigd. In andere gebieden werden er in de eerste plaats geen records bijgehouden. Er zijn ook plaatsen waar we alleen nummers of namen van martelaren hebben zonder verdere details. De meest uitgebreide martelaarsinformatie die vandaag beschikbaar is, komt uit Vlaanderen en Nederland. Dit betekent niet dat meer mensen op die plaatsen werden gemarteld dan elders. Het betekent eenvoudig dat hun verslagen in een betere staat van bewaring gebleven zijn. Eeuwenlang was Martelaarspiegel de primaire bron van informatie over DOOPSGEZINDE martelaren. In de afgelopen honderd jaar hebben historici en geleerden echter veel tijd besteed aan het doorzoeken van originele documenten in de archieven van Europa. Tijdens het proces hebben ze veel informatie ontdekt die nooit in Martelaarspiegel is terechtgekomen. Ze ontdekten ook dat de vermeldingen in Martelaarspiegel niet altijd juist zijn. De primaire bron voor de MMS Anabaptist Martyrs Guide is de Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online (GAMEO) http://www.gameo.org. Wie Martelaarspiegel vandaag leest dienen dit te doen in combinatie met een moderne bron, zoals GAMEO, om te verzekeren dat de meest accurate informatie wordt gebruikt. The Bronx, New York City. Oktober 2016 De zgn. Münsterse Wederdopers hebben de Bijbel misbruikt om gruwelijke daden van geweld te rechtvaardigen. In de lijst van Wederdopers is het woord "revolutionair" erbij gezet in verkleinde letter, om aan te tonen dat deze in praktisch alle opzichten verschilden van de Mennonitische gelovigen, die uiterst vreedzaam waren, geen wapens wilden dragen, maar daarom ook door de Europese Overheden zeer zwaar vervolgd werden. Een andere voorname reden van hun vervolging werd veroorzaakt omdat zij de kinderdoop verwierpen. De Reformatie in Zwitserland en de Nederlanden had in de begintijd de meeste aanhangers onder de zgn. Wederdopers. De meeste mensen die overgingen naar de Hervormingsgezinden konden deze overtuiging niet verwerken, die zoveel vervolging met zich meebracht. De kerken die overgingen tot de Hervorming konden deze impasse niet verdragen en stelden zich aan de kant van de Overheid. De Doopsgezinden in Zuid-Nederland werden uitgeroeid en in Nederland bleven ze bestaan, vooral onder bescherming van Prins Willem van Oranje. In Engeland kreeg de overtuiging van de Geloofsdoop veel groter omvang en werd bekend als de Baptisten, die wereldwijd thans zo'n 80 tot 100 miljoen belijders omvat. De bekende John Bunyan, Spurgeon en Philpot behoorden tot deze gelovigen. Voor een compleet beeld van alle bekende namen van martelaren is het nodig de Martyrologium van Antwerpen te raadplegen en de Martyrologium van Gent en Brugge door dr. Verheyden; met de literatuur van Joh. Decavele als aanvulling op de site: www.theologienet.nl Van de onbekende oprecht martelaren geldt, dat hun namen staan in het Boek de Levens van het Lam en dat ze al eeuwen de Kroon van overwinning dragen om Christus te aanbidden. 4 Middelburg, augustus 2019. Zo hebben zowel B. Lydius als A. Mellinus geen kleine blunder begaan door te trachten de kinderdoop bij de Waldenzen te verdraaien, waarvan zij blijkbaar nooit in een dergelijk licht hebben gedacht; en hen de doop in het geloof te ontzeggen, hetgeen zij zo vele keren hadden beleden. Rooms-katholieke schrijvers proberen de apostolische oorsprong van de Waldenzen te omzeilen. Ze laten het schijnen, alsof de Rooms-katholieke Kerk de enige apostolische kerk is, en dat alle andere kerken nieuwkomers zijn. Om die reden beweren zij, dat de Waldenzen hun oorsprong vinden in Peter Waldo uit de twaalfde eeuw. Dr. Peter Allix zegt: “Sommige protestanten zijn in de val getrapt, die voor hen was uitgezet. … Het is absoluut onjuist, dat deze kerken door Peter Waldo zijn gesticht. … het is pure geschiedvervalsing.” “Ancient Church of Piedmont”, blz. 192, Oxford, 1821 “Het is niet waar, dat Waldo deze naam aan de bewoners van de valleien gaf. The smooth and rough children of western Europe at the millennium, in their black designer dresses or their spiked hair and pierced eyebrows, do not spend nights arguing infant baptism, the uses of the sword, or the perils and advantages of a state church, as my ancestors did during the Anabaptist Reformation of 1525. So we went our quiet way across Holland and France and Switzerland and Ger- many, sometimes simple travelers enjoying the food and the sights, sometimes pilgrims in pursuit of the strange, small traces of our past.     6TH MAY 2020 Forgotten Victims from the Age of Atrocity Professor Alec Ryrie This last lecture of this series on religious atrocities in the age of the Reformation and the religious wars, is about victims who were denied the limelight, who did not receive the full on-stage treatment in their own time. One of the features of atrocities that we have seen again and again is that not all victims are equal. Some – only a few, really – of those who died untimely deaths in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries died in just such a way that their deaths were useful to their contemporaries and successors; they could be made into myths, they helped to populate the world with heroes and villains, to warn successive generations against lowering their guard, or to train them in self-sacrificial virtue, or to remind them of why some truths could never be compromised. Meanwhile, most of the dead were passed over in silence because no-one, or not enough people, had a point they wanted to use them to make. A single death is a tragedy, Stalin supposedly said, and a million deaths are a statistic: but neither is an atrocity, not until someone makes it one, by deciding who needs to be celebrated, who needs to be blamed, and what lessons the survivors and successors of the dead should draw. And as we have also seen throughout this series, the making of atrocities never stands still. Some atrocities fade into memory, like the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Atrocities that were once terrifying become the stuff of jokes, like the Spanish Inquisition.

Other inspiring books are available at: www.PrimitiveChristianity.org Introduction I well remember the first time I faced the stark realization that I was a Mennonite and different. My fourth-grade friend, Gregory, and I were riding home from public school on the bus. We were talking about our future, how we would always be friends and do things together when we grew up. Then he enthusiastically began to describe activities that from my upbringing I knew to be worldly. Desperate to save our lifelong friendship, I turned to Gregory and said, “You will have to leave your church and become a Mennonite when you grow up.” Thus, the inevitability of our way of life impressed itself on my eight-year-old mind. A year later I made my decision to follow Christ. Of course, Gregory never joined my church, and I do not even know his whereabouts today. The theme of separation from the world ran strong in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania where I grew up. But I wrongly assumed that, except for our plainness, we believed the same things that other Christians believed. Then one evening at the Chambersburg Mennonite Church, where I was a member, a visiting speaker jolted me with a graphic picture of my martyr heritage.

    Stories to Sustain a Peace Church Aldred Neufeldt with Tim Schmucker and Harold Thiessen Texts: Romans 12:19-21; Matthew 5:38-48 Today we celebrate Peace Sunday. It’s also Remembrance Day. It first was called Armistice Day when, exactly 100 years ago – on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – a treaty ended the Great War– a war to end all wars, as some called it. Throughout the war both opposing forces told their citizens that God was on their side. By its end at least 10 million combatants died – two times as many were injured. And then there were the millions of civilian deaths – 40 million died in all, are the statistics I’ve seen. These deaths are remembered today in Canada – beginning at our memorials in France. Who here has visited Beaumont-Hamel and Vimy Ridge? You walk on Canadian soil when you’re there – land bequeathed by France – so Canada’s first Remembrance Day celebration today took place there. It’s profoundly moving to walk amongst the graves, thousands of them, row on row, the figure of a weeping woman looking over the field of dead below. Guides speak poignantly to what happened – and, if you listen to the subtext, you can’t help but conclude that war is a stupid way to solve problems. To me, a visit there underscored how important our Anabaptist peace witness is. At the end of that ugly time there was little appetite for war – mostly grief and remembering – and a call to end all wars.

Was hun geheim een ‘terugkeer’ naar de letterlijke uitleg van de Bijbel? Nee, ze waren meer dan alleen maar de Bijbelgetrouwe Christenen. Was het een terugkeer naar de apostolische leer? Nee, ook niet, want ze deden meer dan alleen maar tradities navolgen. Fundamentalisme en tradities hebben van de Christenheid nooit een eenheid kunnen maken of heeft het laten kunnen functioneren.

Abstract Early sixteenth century radical Anabaptism emanated in Switzerland during Huldrych Zwingli’s protest against the Roman Catholic Church. Much like Martin Luther, Zwingli founded his reform effort on the Bible being the final arbiter of the faith, sola scriptura, and the sufficiency of the shed blood of Christ plus nothing for eternal salvation, sola fide. Based on these principles both adopted the doctrine of the Priesthood of the Believer which recognized every believer’s Spirit empowered ability to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. These initial theological tenets resulted in the literal reading of the Bible and a very pragmatic Christian praxis including a Pauline pneumatology that recognized the efficacy of the manifestation of the charismata. Radical adherents of Zwingli rejected infant baptism as being totally unbiblical and insisted upon the rebaptism of adults, but only on a personal confession of faith, thus the term Anabaptist.

    Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 5, No. 3, September 2009 The Stage and the Stake: 16th Century Anabaptist Martyrdom as Resistance to Violent Spectacle W. Benjamin Myers Using Dwight Conquergood’s description of execution as performance and Elaine Scarry’s explanation of the ideology of pain in the torture process, this essay explores how the Anabaptist Reformation martyrs resisted violent and ideologically charged state sanctioned performances of pain and death. By publicly performing heresy, claiming the stake as their own stage, and scripting and ritualizing public undisciplined bodies, these martyrs performed resistance to the social order that those who oversaw violent spectacle intended to preserve. This essay also examines the process of collecting and retelling martyr stories to guide performance studies scholars to challenge hegemonic sacrifices in contemporary culture. In 1571 Anneken Heyndricks was convicted by authorities in Amsterdam of renouncing the Catholic Church, being baptized as an adult, carrying heresy in her heart, belonging to a group of Anabaptists and marrying an Anabaptist. As she was arrested she thanked Jesus that she was worthy to suffer for his name. She was tortured and asked to recant, a request she refused. The bailiff then declared, “…you must die in your sins, so far are you strayed from God” (Braght 872). Her persecutors proceeded to torture her to extort the names of fellow believers “for they thirsted for more innocent blood. But they obtained nothing from Anneken, so faithfully did God keep her lips” (872). After extensive torture her mouth was filled with gunpowder, her hands bound together and her feet and torso tied to a ladder.

In some areas, records were kept but later lost or destroyed. In other areas, no records were kept in the first place. There are also places where we have only numbers or names of martyrs with no further details. The most comprehensive martyr information available today comes from Belgium and the Netherlands. This doesn’t necessarily mean more people were martyred in those places than elsewhere. It simply means their records are in a better state of preservation. For centuries, Martyrs’ Mirror was the primary source of information about Anabaptist martyrs. Over the last hundred ​ ​ years, however, historians and scholars have spent a lot of time digging through original documents in the archives of Europe. In the process they’ve uncovered a lot of information that never made it into Martyrs’ Mirror. They also ​ ​ discovered that the listings in Martyrs’ Mirror are not always accurate. ​ ​ The primary source for the MMS Anabaptist Martyrs Guide is the Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online (GAMEO) (www.gameo.org). Anyone who reads Martyrs’ Mirror today should do so in conjunction with a modern ​ ​ ​ ​ resource, like GAMEO, to assure that the most accurate information is being accessed.
