CHAPTER 1 Cathedrals, Churches, Caves Notes on Architecture, History, and Worship he layers of history, the ways the past persists, are easier to see Tin the Old World, where the irony of ancient towers juxtaposed against tattoo parlors and multinational fast-food outlets is inescapable. The smooth and rough children of western Europe at the millennium, in their black designer dresses or their spiked hair and pierced eyebrows, do not spend nights arguing infant baptism, the uses of the sword, or the perils and advantages of a state church, as my ancestors did during the Anabaptist Reformation of 1525. If today’s citizens were to meet to study the New Testament and reach conclusions about its meaning contrary to those of the state church, the worst they would suffer is ridicule. When my wife Marlyce and I crossed ancient European borders no one asked about our passports, let alone our religion; as long as our cash and credit cards held out, we were free as any bird. So we went our quiet way across Holland and France and Switzerland and Ger- many, sometimes simple travelers enjoying the food and the sights, sometimes pilgrims in pursuit of the strange, small traces of our past. We call ourselves Mennonites now, but our people have claimed and been given many names in the last five centuries, as they wandered over Europe and then to many parts of the world in search of places where they might work out their particular, pecu- liar version of the gospel. 5 6 Scattering Point We were in Europe for three weeks, hardly time to discover anything. -

6TH MAY 2020 Forgotten Victims from the Age of Atrocity Professor Alec Ryrie This last lecture of this series on religious atrocities in the age of the Reformation and the religious wars, is about victims who were denied the limelight, who did not receive the full on-stage treatment in their own time. One of the features of atrocities that we have seen again and again is that not all victims are equal. Some – only a few, really – of those who died untimely deaths in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries died in just such a way that their deaths were useful to their contemporaries and successors; they could be made into myths, they helped to populate the world with heroes and villains, to warn successive generations against lowering their guard, or to train them in self-sacrificial virtue, or to remind them of why some truths could never be compromised. Meanwhile, most of the dead were passed over in silence because no-one, or not enough people, had a point they wanted to use them to make. A single death is a tragedy, Stalin supposedly said, and a million deaths are a statistic: but neither is an atrocity, not until someone makes it one, by deciding who needs to be celebrated, who needs to be blamed, and what lessons the survivors and successors of the dead should draw. And as we have also seen throughout this series, the making of atrocities never stands still. Some atrocities fade into memory, like the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Atrocities that were once terrifying become the stuff of jokes, like the Spanish Inquisition. -

Other inspiring books are available at: www.PrimitiveChristianity.org Introduction I well remember the first time I faced the stark realization that I was a Mennonite and different. My fourth-grade friend, Gregory, and I were riding home from public school on the bus. We were talking about our future, how we would always be friends and do things together when we grew up. Then he enthusiastically began to describe activities that from my upbringing I knew to be worldly. Desperate to save our lifelong friendship, I turned to Gregory and said, “You will have to leave your church and become a Mennonite when you grow up.” Thus, the inevitability of our way of life impressed itself on my eight-year-old mind. A year later I made my decision to follow Christ. Of course, Gregory never joined my church, and I do not even know his whereabouts today. The theme of separation from the world ran strong in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania where I grew up. But I wrongly assumed that, except for our plainness, we believed the same things that other Christians believed. Then one evening at the Chambersburg Mennonite Church, where I was a member, a visiting speaker jolted me with a graphic picture of my martyr heritage. -

Stories to Sustain a Peace Church Aldred Neufeldt with Tim Schmucker and Harold Thiessen Texts: Romans 12:19-21; Matthew 5:38-48 Today we celebrate Peace Sunday. It’s also Remembrance Day. It first was called Armistice Day when, exactly 100 years ago – on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – a treaty ended the Great War– a war to end all wars, as some called it. Throughout the war both opposing forces told their citizens that God was on their side. By its end at least 10 million combatants died – two times as many were injured. And then there were the millions of civilian deaths – 40 million died in all, are the statistics I’ve seen. These deaths are remembered today in Canada – beginning at our memorials in France. Who here has visited Beaumont-Hamel and Vimy Ridge? You walk on Canadian soil when you’re there – land bequeathed by France – so Canada’s first Remembrance Day celebration today took place there. It’s profoundly moving to walk amongst the graves, thousands of them, row on row, the figure of a weeping woman looking over the field of dead below. Guides speak poignantly to what happened – and, if you listen to the subtext, you can’t help but conclude that war is a stupid way to solve problems. To me, a visit there underscored how important our Anabaptist peace witness is. At the end of that ugly time there was little appetite for war – mostly grief and remembering – and a call to end all wars. -

Was hun geheim een ‘terugkeer’ naar de letterlijke uitleg van de Bijbel? Nee, ze waren meer dan alleen maar de Bijbelgetrouwe Christenen. Was het een terugkeer naar de apostolische leer? Nee, ook niet, want ze deden meer dan alleen maar tradities navolgen. Fundamentalisme en tradities hebben van de Christenheid nooit een eenheid kunnen maken of heeft het laten kunnen functioneren. -

Abstract Early sixteenth century radical Anabaptism emanated in Switzerland during Huldrych Zwingli’s protest against the Roman Catholic Church. Much like Martin Luther, Zwingli founded his reform effort on the Bible being the final arbiter of the faith, sola scriptura, and the sufficiency of the shed blood of Christ plus nothing for eternal salvation, sola fide. Based on these principles both adopted the doctrine of the Priesthood of the Believer which recognized every believer’s Spirit empowered ability to read and interpret the Bible for themselves. These initial theological tenets resulted in the literal reading of the Bible and a very pragmatic Christian praxis including a Pauline pneumatology that recognized the efficacy of the manifestation of the charismata. Radical adherents of Zwingli rejected infant baptism as being totally unbiblical and insisted upon the rebaptism of adults, but only on a personal confession of faith, thus the term Anabaptist. -

I really appreciated the whole presentation – an effective job was done of taking concepts and making them clear and understandable. How we do theology is so crucial and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. I find Bible Study fascinating and life-changing. The balance brought to the subject is refreshing! The communication was very effective. God bless you in your work. I know that there was at least one person here who was not of an Ana- baptist background. Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 5, No. 3, September 2009 The Stage and the Stake: 16th Century Anabaptist Martyrdom as Resistance to Violent Spectacle W. Benjamin Myers Using Dwight Conquergood’s description of execution as performance and Elaine Scarry’s explanation of the ideology of pain in the torture process, this essay explores how the Anabaptist Reformation martyrs resisted violent and ideologically charged state sanctioned performances of pain and death. By publicly performing heresy, claiming the stake as their own stage, and scripting and ritualizing public undisciplined bodies, these martyrs performed resistance to the social order that those who oversaw violent spectacle intended to preserve. This essay also examines the process of collecting and retelling martyr stories to guide performance studies scholars to challenge hegemonic sacrifices in contemporary culture. In 1571 Anneken Heyndricks was convicted by authorities in Amsterdam of renouncing the Catholic Church, being baptized as an adult, carrying heresy in her heart, belonging to a group of Anabaptists and marrying an Anabaptist. As she was arrested she thanked Jesus that she was worthy to suffer for his name. She was tortured and asked to recant, a request she refused. The bailiff then declared, “…you must die in your sins, so far are you strayed from God” (Braght 872). Her persecutors proceeded to torture her to extort the names of fellow believers “for they thirsted for more innocent blood. But they obtained nothing from Anneken, so faithfully did God keep her lips” (872). After extensive torture her mouth was filled with gunpowder, her hands bound together and her feet and torso tied to a ladder. -

Engraving by Jan Luiken for Martyrs’ Mirror. ~ ~ ~ Introduction The total number of Anabaptist martyrs is unknown. Record-keeping in the various regions of 16th-century Europe was inconsistent. In some areas, records were kept but later lost or destroyed. In other areas, no records were kept in the first place. There are also places where we have only numbers or names of martyrs with no further details. The most comprehensive martyr information available today comes from Belgium and the Netherlands. This doesn’t necessarily mean more people were martyred in those places than elsewhere. It simply means their records are in a better state of preservation. For centuries, Martyrs’ Mirror was the primary source of information about Anabaptist martyrs. Over the last hundred years, however, historians and scholars have spent a lot of time digging through original documents in the archives of Europe. In the process they’ve uncovered a lot of information that never made it into Martyrs’ Mirror. They also discovered that the listings in Martyrs’ Mirror are not always accurate. The primary source for the MMS Anabaptist Martyrs Guide is the Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online (GAMEO) (www.gameo.org). Anyone who reads Martyrs’ Mirror today should do so in conjunction with a modern resource, like GAMEO, to assure that the most accurate information is being accessed.
