SALTFORD HALL BOOKING OFFICE 01225 874081 E-mail: [email protected] www.saltfordhall.co.uk AN UPDATE FROM THE SCA The financial year of the charity has just ended and by the time you read this we will have held the AGM. It therefore seems an opportune time to give a summary of our financial position to those of you not able to make the AGM. The headlines are that during the year ending 31 January 2015 we had a total income of £116,000 and total expenses of £109,500 so we had a surplus of nearly £7,000, compared with a loss of just over £4,000 the previous year. So we had a pretty good year last year and this was despite spending a further net £13,500 on further maintenance/ improvements. After allowing for £1,700 of this being donations in advance to the paths and £1,000 in grants towards set up costs of the Festival, this leaves a true net figure of around £4,300. However, this would once again have been a substantial loss without over £17,600 from fundraising, books (on wall and in hall), your generous donations and grants. The main items of note were :- • SCAN advertising income was up 30% and despite increased print costs made a healthy surplus. We’ve also had great feedback from readers that they love the full colour glossy magazine. Our thanks to all our advertisers and to the army of volunteers who deliver the SCAN to every house in Saltford. • Fundraising last year raised over £10,000 and this coming year we hope the 80 plus events during the Festival will once again be enthusiastically supported. A huge thank you to the merry band of volunteers who help to put all these events on and to all of you for supporting so well during the year. • Reg and Jill Williams, in a new initiative, donated all the money from books on their wall (24 High Street) and in the Hall and last year they were able to donate £1900 to the SCA. • In terms of expenses, gas and electric were up 30%. We’ve set up a building efficiency sub 3 committee to specifically look at reducing our heat and light, which is now nearly £10,000pa. After spending £55,000 previously on maintenance and improvements at the Hall, we spent a further £32,000 before grants last year, bringing the total to over £87,000 in just the last 3 years. The main item was the new lift, which after receiving a significant grant from SITA Trust cost us a net £7000. Other items were :- • Repaired flat roof over storage rooms • High gutters all cleaned out • New PCs in the Office • Lagging of all pipework • New stage slider for lights • 2 new bowls mats • New stage microphones Already in this new financial year we have also spent £2250 on a new set of black stage cloths and £2000 in the last couple of weeks on having all the wooden floors revarnished. As well as SITA Trust for the lift, we received grants from Saltford Parish Council and from the BANES Ward Councillor’s Initiative During the coming year we will be running fewer fundraising events, but we are organizing another 9 day Festival in June. We will be using the money raised and what we have in the bank already, to pro- gress further improvements this coming year. Now the lift is installed we intend to dramatically improve the look of the foyer to make the Hall far more welcoming and we are delighted that we have had some interest in helping us with the redesign. We also intend to invest significantly in improving our building efficiency, potentially through cladding the outside of the building.

4 DONATION APPEAL UPDATE

Over the last couple of editions of SCAN we have enclosed a donation envelope and encouraged you to support financially the continued work of the SCA and the reopening of the permissive paths. I’m delighted to say that since launching that appeal we have already raised (including Gift Aid) £1370 for the work of the SCA and just over £2000 towards keeping the paths open for another year. A huge thank you to those who have already donated and supported one or both of these appeals. The permissive footpaths to the south and west of Saltford were closed at the end of 2013 following the withdrawal of subsidy for public access by DEFRA. Saltford Commu- nity Association has worked with the local farmer, Mr Adam Stratton, and have signed a legal agreement allowing over 4.5km of the permissive paths (shown in green) to re- open to walkers and riders shortly before Christmas. This was only possible as a result of Eveleighs Estate Agents coming forward with a generous £3000 donation to fund the first year of the arrangement. In order for this agreement to remain in place next and each subsequent year, the SCA needs specific donations to raise £3000 and we are delighted that we are already 2/3rds of the way there this year. It needs just another 35 people to donate an average of £25, plus Gift Aid, to reach our target with months to spare. This is a small price to pay for continu- ing to enjoy over 4.5km of footpaths. Without regular, annual donations from residents to cover the costs, the SCA will not be able to keep these paths open and it is highly likely that once closed they will remain closed for ever as the land will be planted with crops. If you wish to donate and don’t still have your donation envelope, then please either pick one up from the foyer of the Hall or go to our website where a specific section can be found at http://www.saltfordhall.co.uk/Permissive_paths.html This page provides a link to a downloadable Gift Aid form and details of how to make a donation including via Paypal. It also allows you to specifically indicate how you wish your donation to be used. We will provide a further update in the next SCAN.

5 Saltford Panto – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

The launch of the new Saltford Panto club has been a roaring success this month with record numbers in the audiences but also a great sense of camaraderie and fun.

We have been very welcomed by the Saltford Community Association and feel part of the family already! Thanks go particularly to Chris Essex and his team of helpers for their support.

We are hoping to establish ourselves now, make links with the other clubs that meet at Saltford Hall and join in with what is going on there.

We are all very much looking forward to our next production Peter Pan next year and hope that those of you who came, will spread the word and invite your friends and families along too for this.

Look out for the auditions in September we will be posting the advert in the Scan.

S.M.B.C.

INVITATION MIXED FOURS TOURNAMENT 7thMARCH, 2015

Saltford ran their fourteenth Invitation Mixed Fours Tournament on Saturday last. Twelve teams arrived to ROLL UP & PLAY BOWLS and the day turned out to be a happy, relaxed event (confirmed by a thank you e-mail) which also, fortunately, resulted in a good profit.

For those who may be interested, all teams play five games. The winners are those with the maximum points (two for a win and one for a draw), with shot difference and then ends won taken into consideration, if necessary. Hutton , from near Weston super Mare, won four of their games and drew the other – quite a good day! – to win Parker pens and not the usual shield. They thought it was a good idea. The runners-up were Crudwell, from near Malmesbury, who had won four of their games and also received pens, which they thought would be useful and not end up in the loft! We are very fortunate to have one of the best venues in the area, and many players say how they enjoy coming to Saltford .

Our members gave an eclectic array of raffle prizes, 36 in all, creating much discussion as to which was the most desirable. Lady members made delicious cakes to sell and some spent time and energy running the refreshments bar, which was open all day. As always, some worked over a hot stove in the kitchen, preparing and serving the delicious lunches, in particular Doreen who made the, now renowned, desserts. Sincere thanks have been extended to all, including those who put out, and tidied away, tables, chairs and, of course, mats, together with the one who spent hours organising the washing-up machine, and the one overseeing the scoring.

We enjoy sharing our day with friends in an effort to raise funds to pass on to S.C.A.

We raised a total of £704.52 – What an absolutely fantastic result!

Love Saltford! Our “I love Saltford” mugs are available at just £5 and have already proved popular since they were launched at the end of February. Available from “Saltford Flowers By Design” at Saltford Post Office, 493 Bath Road, these dishwasher-proof mugs show you care about Saltford and make an ideal gift or addition to your own collection of mugs.

History of Saltford As part of its purpose to champion all that’s great about Saltford for a better and more sustainable future, SEG decided in early 2015 to research and record the history of Saltford on our website. Only by valuing our history and origins can we gain a better understanding of the importance that we as a community should take care of the land and people that support us all.

This is a significant project. We shall be recording Saltford’s history from pre-Roman times to the 20th Century and make it available for all to see on our website. We are already uncovering fascinating facts about life in Saltford in past centuries. This is an iterative process, slowly growing and develop- ing in content as we research and discover information.

If you have any historical information or you are able to lend us old photographs, sketches, old maps, historic documents etc. concerning Saltford (the older the better) please SEG by email to: info@salt- fordenvironmentgroup.org.uk or tel: 07814 720763. We shall announce progress with the project on our website and in future editions of SCAN.

Saltford-friendly Wombles We hope that already you are noticing a reduction in litter as a result of litter picks that have been held around Saltford. If you hate litter and want to get involved in helping make Saltford a cleaner, litter-free village, do get in touch with Julie Sampson and ask to join Saltford Wombles. Julie can advise you of organised litter picks or lend you the equipment if you wish to do your own litter pick.

If you have spotted a litter problem area in Saltford or if you are interested in getting involved with Saltford Wombles, please contact Julie by email to: julie.sampson@barking- mad.uk.com or tel: 01225 874603. Phil Harding, Chairman Saltford Environment Group www.saltfordenvironmentgroup.org.uk

16 SALTFORD VILLAGE CHOIR We have just had our AGM which showed us as a happy and profitable band of people. In fact one comment was that it was the happiest AGM they had ever attended. We were able to increase our donation to the SCA from £2200 to £2500 which pleased the SCA treasurer very much. We are now rehearsing the songs we shall be presenting at our June concert ,which will open the Saltford Festival. If any one wishes to join us (especially any male voices) please come along on a Tues- day evening at 7.30 in the Wansdyke Room.

Can you help us with advertising coordination?

We have had great feedback following the introduction of colour, the increase in number of pages and the quality of the production of SCAN over the last couple of years. We are indebted to our editor Peter Coombs for composing each edition and we are particularly grateful to our advertisers, many of whom have advertised in SCAN for years and heartily welcome those that have only just started. Our thanks also go to Saltford Parish Council for their £500 grant towards the production costs.

As a community organisation our primary purpose of producing and distributing 3000 copies of each edition of the SCAN is to keep the residents of Saltford and surrounding areas fully informed of what is going on in their local community. Its popularity means that despite an increase in costs we are fully covered by our in- come. This is only possible as we contact current and prospective advertisers every edition.

If you could spare a few hours to undertake this task please e-mail scan@saltford- hall.co.uk or leave a message at the Office (01225 874081) and our over-worked treasurer will get straight back to you!

Message from Jacob Rees-Mogg MP On Monday 30th March Parliament will be officially dissolved in line with the Fixed Term Parliaments Act 2011. The Act stipulates that parliamentary general elections take place every five years on the first Thursday in May. It also provides for early general elec- tions if either the House of Commons votes for one or if there is a failure of the House to agree a vote of confidence in a new government within fourteen days of a vote of no confidence. Dissolution of the House of Commons means that until the general election has taken place, twenty-five working days thereafter, Members of Parliament cease to exist. The Commons will be shut with strictly no access to MPs offices during the election period; if former Members wish to return to the Parliamentary estate during this time they have to be escorted by the Serjeant at Arms. All the usual support system given to Members stops including e-mails and postage. This obviously means that it is difficult to continue with any but the most urgent casework. The House of Commons’ responsibility is to hold the government to account and seek redress of grievance. However, while the Queen’s government carries on there is no House of Commons. This reverses as soon as an MP is returned and does not wait for the formal opening of Parliament. This means that normal service can resume after about five weeks. www.jacobreesmogg.com

Santa Dash On the 26th February Saltford Santa Dash Team 2014 were delighted to welcome their supporters to a presentation evening at Saltford Golf Club. The guests included business and private spon- sors, companies and individuals donating ser- vices, funds and expertise together with many of the dedicated volunteers! On behalf of the Santa Dash Team, Roger Spooner thanked everyone for their generosity and commitment without which this hugely successful community event could not take place! The Santa Dash raised just short of £10,000 which was divided between CLIC Sargent and The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust supporting Corey Clifton [pictured], a local teen- ager who has benefited from the support of these two charities. As with the first Dash in 2013, once again there was an amazing response to this local event and yes there will be a 2015 Saltford Santa Dash so book Sunday 6th December in your diary! If you would like to offer assistance in any way please email saltfordsantadash@gmail. com you will receive a very warm welcome!

30 Oil buying scheme

“More free memberships available for Community Oil Buying Scheme” “The West of England Rural Network are once again giving away free memberships (normally £20/year) to anyone over 70 living in the West of England who uses domestic heating oil. This is thanks to a second grant awarded by Quartet Community Founda- tion from their ‘Surviving Winter’ fund. The scheme is open to all residents of Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bristol. Local com- munity buildings such as village halls, schools and churches can also benefit from the scheme, as well as businesses such as farms, shops and offices. The scheme works by placing a single collective order once a month, and using the buying power of a large order to negotiate with all the suppliers who serve our area. The negotiated price is typically 4.5p less than the average price quoted and most members save around £120 per year. If you are interested in joining the community oil buying scheme, call Jill Baker on 01275 333701 or visit www.wern.org.uk/oil.”

Saltford Brass Mill

Council leaders see £50K renovation at Saltford Brass Mill Cllr Paul Crossley, leader of B&NES Council, and Cllr David Bellotti, B&NES Cabinet member for resources, were giv- en a special tour of Saltford Brass Mill by Brian Cooper and the Saltford Brass Mill volunteers. The tour was to show them the completion of the £50K renovation project carried out by B&NES Council. Saltford Brass Mill in The Shallows, Salt- ford, is a listed building and a scheduled ancient monument and is held on a long lease by B&NES Council. Council Leader, Cllr Paul Crossley, had previously visited in 2012. This led to important surveys being undertaken on the structure and the electrical system. The £50K renova- tion project that followed included additional structural support and a comprehensive re-wiring of all the electrics to ensure safety in a building that is so close to the river. Cllr Bellotti thanked the volunteers who put up interpretation displays, open the build- ing for visitors, do routine husbandry, and provide educational talks on the history of the Brass Mill. Local Parish Councillor, Duncan Hounsell, who had campaigned for the renovation added his thanks to all involved. “£50K is the biggest investment in the Brass Mill for almost 20 years. This means that the Brass Mill can open again to visitors and it is ex- plaining the history of the Mill to visitors which motivates the volunteer team.”

32 SCA Appoints Local Firm as New Cleaning Contractors

Each year the SCA reviews its cleaning contractor to ensure that we get the best quality cleaning for our hirers and users and the best value for money.

This year we went out to tender to a number of companies and based primarily on the quality of service we believe they can provide, we are delighted to announce that we have appointed local Saltford firm Greenfingers. Many of you will be aware that they are a family run business living in Saltford, just a stone’s throw away from the Hall. What is particularly nice is that many members of the firm are regular users of the Hall and if they don’t want their friends moaning to them about the cleaning, I’m sure will keep it spotless!

Since they took over the contract at 1 February, they have already undertaken a deep clean of all areas and many hirers have already commented on the improved state of the cleaning and the nice smell around the place. We look forward to working with Greenfingers for many years to come.

"Green fingers in Bristol Ltd are a gardening, landscaping and cleaning business providing high quality commercial and domestic services. Established in 1996 we offer a friendly service from a family run business with over 25 years’ experience. We are fully insured in every area of our business with no job is too big or too small. 34 SCA MUSICAL – I LOVE YOU YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE

When Corinne-Anne Richards approached the SCA about putting on a fundraising musical last year, we were familiar with her directorial talents from previous Saltford Drama Club and KLOGs productions. She gathered around her a great bunch of people to help, not least Keith Warhurst as Musical Director.

The whole team, front and back of stage, the band and those running the bar put on 3 nights of wonderful entertainment attended by nearly 300 people over the 3 performances. Its hard to single people out for mention, but we would just like to name the cast of Jenny Abson, Grant McCotter, Corinne, James and Mark Sellick and Sally Warhurst.

From the very first performance the rave reviews started coming in and these are just some of them :-

“The musical was fantastic. Would not have expected better in the West End....they could make a fortune taking the show on tour. Hope they do another”.

“Last night my husband and I went to see "I love you I your perfect now change!" put on by Saltford Community Association. It was brilliant, great acting and singing by a very talented cast... so if you are at a loose end tonight or tomorrow it is well worth going to see....”

“West End standard with a brilliant cast, musicians, sound and lights. Last chance tonight to catch something Saltford and Keynsham will probably only see once in a very long while. Brilliant, sensational are only two words to describe the experience. “

“The most professional show I have seen there. Congratulations to Corinne Anne Richards, who directed and performed in the show, and also to the other cast members. I look forward to seeing many more shows like this. “

“Great show, haven't laughed, smiled and giggled like that for quite a while. “

As well as a huge success musically it was also a great success in raising money for the SCA with £1650 raised after expenses.

The success of this show has spurred the group into calling themselves SCA Musical Productions or SCAMP and they are already planning another production within the next year. 35 Advertise your business here from £15.75 Contact Chris Essex 01225 874081 [email protected]

36 RECENT FUNDRAISING EVENTS

You will have read elsewhere in this edition that the first panto put on by Saltford Panto Club was a huge success and we look forward to welcoming them back next year with Peter Pan.

In the week following the panto we had our first ever wrestling bouts to be held in the Hall, where we will provide a bar and food for the event. For a first event of its type this was hugely enjoyed by those present and you can see a lot more photos on our Facebook page. We look forward to welcoming them back on 1 May, when kids go free – see advert on page 2.

In the middle of February we had an amazing weekend, with the Beau Street Hoard roadshow on the Saturday and the ever popular Flea Market on the Sunday, when nearly 50 stalls had been eagerly bought up. Alongside both events a great team ran a hugely success café and all together we raised over £1100.

Then at the end of February Corinne-Anne Richards directed and Keith Warhurst was the musical director of the first SCA Musical which ran over 3 nights to rave reviews like “The musical was fantastic. Would not have expected better in the West End....they could make a fortune taking the show on tour. Hope they do another”. The Musical raised £1650 and you can read Corinne’s full report on page xx

Other than supporting some private bookings with food and bars, we have a quiet period leading up to the Festival in June, when it will be all hands on deck! A huge thank you as always to all those volunteers who work at these events for our enjoyment and if you would like to get involved please e-mail [email protected]

Claverton Road playing field - Goal mouth repairs The grass in the two goal areas on the playing field next to Saltford Primary School is to be re-turfed. B&NES Council maintains the playing field but the Parish Council put in the goalposts, and the goal areas have again become worn and need re-turfing. This work is to be done, at the Parish Council’s expense, in the week beginning 13 April 2015. The goal areas will be cordoned off and out of use for a short time for the ground to recover. Saltford Community Awards The Parish Council is giving an Exemplary Achievement Award to Tina Curtis for her contribution to Saltford life, including 1st Saltford Scouts, the Parish Council, Saltford Business Network, and various fundraising charity events. It does not cost anything to stand for election and candidates do not need to belong to a political party. You need to be aged 18 or over, live or work in Saltford, and have two other local people to nominate you. Nomination papers are available from the Parish Clerk or B&NES Electoral Services, and must be returned to B&NES Returning Officer, Electoral Services, Guildhall, Bath, BA1 5AW by 4pm on Thursday 9 April 2015. Travelling by train in July or August 2015?
