More specifically, these refereed articles consider research and analysis pertaining to the imbrications of neoliberal/globalization (the globalization of capitalism), development (or the post-war interventionist project initiated by the colonial/imperial powers and “Third World elite” who inherited the colonial mantel) and education (in it’s dominant form, predominantly an uncritical-reproductive exercise in the importation of Eurocentric non/formal schooling/knowledge, albeit with localized variations) in these regions. Given the post-independence foundational project of inter/national development and the most recent wave of neoliberal/globalization, all contributors have tried to give due consideration to examining education/learning in relation to social, political, religio-cultural and/or economic trajectories unleashed by these international/global projects and their neo/colonial, internal colonial and/or anti/imperialist implications for the peoples of these regions and related resistances/reformulations for renewal and possibility, i.e., the collection foregrounds such critical perspectives on the intersections between education/learning, neoliberal/globalization and development with the view to illuminate colonial/imperial ambitions and the related and on-going politics of educational, socio-cultural and political-economic resistances, alternatives and re-formulations. The articles include a mix of critical-analytical reflections utilizing pertinent educational and inter- disciplinary social science literatures, primary/critical- interpretive research-based reports/analyses and/or analyses that are informed by direct experience. The range of actors/spaces of education/learning considered include: schools, institutions of higher education, NGOs, social movements/struggles and local communities, subsequently embracing education/learning in all it’s garbs/compartments—formal, nonformal, informal/incidental, popular and indigenous/local. The contributions address and have implications for interdisciplinary and education/learning specific action/practice, policy, theorization and political praxis. In keeping with these emphases, the collection considers “formal contexts” of education in Part I and “social movement/action, NGO and community contexts” in Part II. The collection is consistent with the JAPSS emphasis on amplifying critical and/or interpretive research traditions, scholarship by diasporic and Asian/African

They are the first real mass movement that Thailand has ever produced due to their approach of directly involving the grassroots population while campaigning for a larger political space for the underclass at a national level, thus being projected as a potential danger to the old power structure. The prolonged protests of the red shirt movement has exceeded all expectations and defied all the expressions of contempt against them by the Thai urban elite. This paper argues that the modern Thai political system is best viewed as a place dominated by the elite who were never radically threatened ‘from below’ and that the red shirt movement has been a challenge from bottom-up. Following this argument, it seeks to codify the transforming dynamism of a complicated set of political processes and actors in Thailand, while investigating the rise of the red shirt movement as a catalyst in such transformation. Once capitalism becomes a dominant mode of production in a state, the argument goes, monarchy is either abolished by the bourgeoisie or transformed into a constitutional monarchy, a symbolic institution that plays no role in the economic and political realms, which are exclusively reserved for the bourgeoisie. The monarchy of Thailand, however, fits neither of those two narratives. Under Thai capitalism, the Crown not only survives but also thrives politically and economically. What explains the political hegemony and economic success of the Thai monarchy? Examining the relationship between the transformation of the Thai monarchy’s public images in the mass media and the history of Thai capitalism, this study argues that the Crown has become a “bourgeois monarchy.” Embodying both royal glamour and middle-class ethics, the “bourgeois monarchy” in Thailand has been able to play an active role in the national economy and politics while secretly accumulating wealth because it provides a dualistic ideology that complements the historical development of Thai capitalism, an ideology that not only motivates the Thai bourgeoisie to work during times of economic growth but also tames bourgeois anxiety when economic crisis hits the country.

It is proposed, that this new phase indicates the breakdown of the hegemonic rule of the old elite networks – the army, the bureaucracy, the palace, and the old Thai business elites. These networks, it is argued, have held both material and ideological control over the masses since Thailand became a modern capitalist state in the late 19th century during the historic hegemonic bloc of the Pax Britannica. The starting point for analysis in this study is to interpret Thailand’s current political crisis, which has been undergoing since the military ousted the Prime Minister elect, Taksin Shinawat, and his Thai Rak Thai government in September 2006, as a class conflict, the roots of which are embedded in the historical development processes of capitalism in Thailand. The new transformational phase, it is argued, indicates the emergence of the rural and the urban poor as a counter-hegemonic politically active social force in the realm of Thai politics.

Proponents of cultural relativism argue that since democracy is based on Anglo-Saxon cultural experience, it is inherently alien to other cultural contexts thereby creating a need for adjusting democracy or for inventing culturally informed alternatives. This approach, however, is criticised for providing a convenient justification for abusing political power to suppress popular will in the name of culture. The focus of this dissertation is to provide a better understanding of the culture-democracy relationship in the context of Thai politics. The aim of this dissertation is to examine the role culture plays in concepts of democracy in Thailand in relation to how cultural rhetoric may influence popular ideas, perceptions and even expectations of democracy. The research methods adopted in this dissertation include an extensive analysis of the recurring rhetoric related to democracy discourse in Thailand with a special emphasis on the use of language and prescriptive discourses constructed with the aim to influence popular ideas and perceptions on democracy. For this purpose, this dissertation will analyse a number of original source texts in Thai language along with major academic works that are related to different events in Thai politics and comprise this paper’s case studies.

    Jo urnal of Asia Pacific Studies ( 2009 ) V ol 1, No 1 , 76 -100 Class Struggle between the Coloured T-Shirts in Thailand Giles Ji Ungpakorn,1 Associate Professor and Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Guild of Independent Scholars Opinion Paper Abstract: The political crisis and unrest which we have seen in Thailand over the last four and a half years, represents a serious class war between the rich conservative elites (Royalist Yellow Shirts) and the urban and rural poor (Red Shirts). It is not a pure class war. Due to a vacuum on the Left in the past, millionaire and populist politician, Taksin Shinawat, has managed to provide leadership to the Red Shirts. The labour movement, as an organised force, has remained on the fringes of this crisis, despite the fact that individual workers have been politicised and are active. This class war has turned Thailand upside down and raised important political questions about the roles of many institutions which we have to try to answer. The actions by the conservative elites have forced millions of ordinary people to reject the mainstream ideas about loyalty to the Monarchy. The taboo about criticising the Palace and the King’s advisors has been broken. The courts have been exposed as merely puppets of those in power and the mainstream media has openly taken the side of the elites. Even traditional Civil Society groups, such as NGOs networks and academics have failed to defend freedom of speech and democracy, joining with the conservative elites and the military in their attempts to totally undermine the democratic process and all forms of social justice.
