I’m not a scientist. I’ll never experience the thrill and analysis it took to get to the headline. At such a point, the gravitational field equations fail. As an alternative to the problem of the singularity arises the existence of Exotic Compact Objects (ECOs) that prevent the problem of the singularity through a transition phase of matter once it has crossed the horizon. ECOs are characterized by a closeness parameter or cutoff, e, which measures the degree of compactness of the object. This parameter is established as the difference between the radius of the ECO’s surface and the gravitational radius. Thus, different values of e correspond to different types of ECOs. If e is very big, the ECO behaves more like a star than a black hole. On the contrary, if e tends to a very small value, the ECO behaves like a black hole. It is considered a conceptual model of the origin of the cutoff for ECOs, when a dust shell contracts gravitationally from an initial position to near the Schwarzschild radius. This allowed us to find that the cutoff makes two types of contributions: a classical one governed by General Relativity and one of a quantum nature, if the ECO is very close to the horizon, when estimating that the maximum entropy is contained within the material that composes the shell.

    May 20, 2016 Implement the Endangered Species Act Using the Best Available Science To: Secretary Sally Jewell and Secretary Penny Prtizker We, the under-signed scientists, recommend the U.S. government place species conservation policy on firmer scientific footing by following the procedure described below for using the best available science. A recent survey finds that substantial numbers of scientists at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration believe that political influence at their agency is too high.i Further, recent species listing and delisting decisions appear misaligned with scientific understanding.ii,iii,iv,v,vi For example, in its nationwide delisting decision for gray wolves in 2013, the FWS internal review failed the best science test when reviewed by an independent peer-review panel.vii Just last year, a FWS decision not to list the wolverine ran counter to the opinions of agency and external scientists.viii We ask that the Departments of the Interior and Commerce make determinations under the Endangered Species Actix only after they make public the independent recommendations from the scientific community, based on the best available science. The best available science comes from independent scientists with relevant expertise who are able to evaluate and synthesize the available science, and adhere to standards of peer-review and full conflict-of-interest disclosure. We ask that agency scientific recommendations be developed with external review by independent scientific experts. There are several mechanisms by which this can happen; however, of greatest importance is that an independent, external, and transparent science-based process is applied consistently to both listing and delisting decisions.

    SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS & COMPUTING DIVISION senior projects spring 2021 Ultrasonic Pollution: A New Kind of Noise Pollution Cillian Ahearn Advisor: Bruce Robertson All organisms use verbal communication to gain information about their surroundings, in order to hunt, feed their chicks, and call or warn one another. This communication is increasingly masked by anthropogenic noise pollution, but that might not be the only type of noise pollution to exist. Recently, there has been a rise into the research of organisms that use ultrasound, but virtually none into anthropogenic ultrasound and whether or not it has the possibility to mask ultrasonic vocalizations. As such, my study hopes to fill in this gap of knowledge by doing an exploratory study in a city, Hartford, CT, where I identified sources of man-made ultrasound, as well as their frequency ranges. These ranges were then compared against ultrasonic vocalizations of mice, Richardson’s ground squirrels, and tomato plants. My study found that the more narrow a biological frequency range is, the more at risk it is to be fully masked. This implicates ultrasound as a potential new source of noise pollution that should be mitigated as part of conservation efforts to preserve the environment. This chapter provides an overview of many of her key findings, some of which have been outlined and described elsewhere. We also provide a new look at McClintock’s early contributions, based on our readings of her primary publications and documents found in archives. We expect the reader will gain insight and appreciation for Barbara McClintock’s unique perspective, elegant experiments and unprecedented scientific achievements. 1 Introduction This chapter is focused on the scientific contributions of Barbara McClintock, pioneering plant geneticist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of transposable genetic elements in corn. Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.
