Will the Minister of HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state:

(a) the number of Deemed Universities in the country, as on date, State-wise;

(b) whether it is a fact that in the recent years there have been a spurt in the number of such universities;

(c) if so, the reasons therefor;

(d) whether the performance of these universities is being monitored; and

(e) if so, the details thereof? Answer

(a) to (e) A statement is laid on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT REFERRED IN REPLY TO PART (a) TO (e) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.309 BY SHRI V. VETRISELVAN FOR 11TH DECEMBER 2001 REGARDING DEEMED UNIVERSITIES.

(a) to (c) At present there are 52 deemed universities in the country, the State-wise number of deemed universities is annexed. Due to expeditious disposal of the pending proposals and revised guidelines issued by UGC providing for granting deemed to be university status to de-novo institutions in the emerging areas with the promise of excellence, the number of deemed universities have gone up. In the year 2000, 5 institutions were notified as deemed universities and in the year 2001, 6 institutions were so notified.

(d) & (e) The institutions granted Deemed to be University Status are governed as per the provisions of its MOA/Rules which are generally based on the model MOA/Rules framed by UGC.D eemed Universities are autonomous organisations and it is their Directors/Vice-Chancellors and their other internal mechanisms which do the monitoring. There are nominees of the Central Government/UGC in the Search Committee for the appointment of the Vice-Chancellors/Chief Executives and in their various internal bodies such as Board of Management, Finance Committee and Syndicate, etc. In the long term the performance of these universities are subject to review and inspection by the Central Government/UGC.
