“Christ is risen! Truly he is risen!” In ancient times Christians exchanged this greeting at Easter. And Fr. Michael Hull will be quick to tell you that our brothers and sisters in the Eastern Churches still offer it during the Easter season. After a while it becomes an uplifting interruption, as if to say, “Just in case you forgot—God won!” and the response, “And he won by a mile.”

The Resurrection of Christ is celebrated in many ways throughout the world, but always with the same sense of astonishment and joy. On Easter we celebrate an enormous victory that seems to have been won against all odds – that is, until we remember the power of God. It is God who gives life and who receives it back again after its course on earth is complete. It is God who declared all human life to be precious and good. And, it is God who intended that we should live in the fullness of life forever.

All too often our thoughts are fixed on the failings of humanity. We see the faults, the injustices, the tragedies that lead to suffering. We rail against heaven or one another, and shake our heads in disappointment. Often we’re tempted to say, “The odds are against us.” What we are facing is the reality that we are woefully imperfect.

When we first fell into sin, the odds were indeed stacked against us. Death was inevitable, but who ever dreamed it would lead human beings to embrace a culture of death? This is certainly not what God intended, nor is it in any way acceptable to God whose very being and whose very gift to us is life. God will always have the last word and it will be a word of love and a word of life.

In a very special way today, we celebrate victory of good over evil. Into every tragedy of human suffering, Jesus’ own Passion and Death make their own very real appearance. God enters into every moment of our lives with a love that is found in Jesus Christ. The Risen Lord stands with us and calls us to share in His victory over sin and evil and even death itself.

So, I’d like to propose an intense and intentional celebration and living of the whole season of Easter right through to Pentecost as one of the best and most fruitful ways to restore our hope for this crazy old world so that we respond as true disciples of Jesus Christ to the challenges before us. Experiencing and living the reality and power of the Resurrection and the power of the Holy Spirit as the first disciples did has always been the ultimate answer to whatever crisis the Church or society in general has faced in every generation and every historical situation.

Those who truly believe in the Resurrection have a positive world view despite the terroristic threats and political chaos of our day because they know that God’s love is always going to win out over hate. They imitate the disciples on the road to Emmaus and allow their hearts to burn with God’s love and try to live according to Gospel values. They have grateful hearts as they realize that everything is ultimately a gift from God. They follow the example of Pope Francis and try to share God’s love with all people; especially those most in need.

And as Adults they hunger for a deeper spiritual growth and maturity. To help satisfy that hunger the parish has recently acquired a great resource for Spiritual Renewal which can be found at FORMED.org. This is a revolutionary online platform featuring some of the best Catholic videos, audio talks, eBooks and movies from trusted partners like the Augustine Institute, St. Paul Center, Marian Fathers, Lighthouse Catholic Media, Ignatius Press and Word on Fire. This could be a life changing resource for personal Faith Formation and it is at the fingertips of every parishioner who has a computer or smart phone. The parish has partnered with Augustine Institute to offer it to you for free. The parish code for Formed.org is JMGAH4.

The love of God raised Jesus from the dead so that we could see with our own eyes as well as with the eyes of faith the real nobility of life to which we are called. The victory is within reach. We have but to follow Him and come to rejoice in his very personal love for each of us until earth becomes heaven. “Christ is risen! Truly he is risen!”

On behalf of my brother priests and deacons and the entire parish staff I wish you a blessed Easter, echoing Pope Francis: “Let the risen Jesus enter your life, welcome Him as a friend, with trust: He is life!” Alleluia!

On the Way Home: Today we renewed our baptismal promises, ask your Mom or Dad, if they remember the Church that you were baptized in and who baptized you. Why did they have you baptized?
