  • Cold War II: Hollywood's Renewed Obsession with Russia
H-USA Edited Collection: Cold War II: Hollywood’s Renewed Obsession with Russia Discussion published by Tatiana Konrad on Monday, August 13, 2018 Date: October 1, 2018 The Cold War, with its bald confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union, has been widely depicted in film. Starting even before the conflict actually began with Ernst Lubitsch’s portrayals of communism in Ninotschka (1939), and ranging from Stanley Kubrick’s openly “Cold War” Dr. Strangelove (1963) to Fred Schepisi’s The Russia House (1990), Hollywood’s obsession with the Cold War, the Soviets/Russians, communism, and the political and ideological differences between the U.S. and Russia were pronounced. This obsession has persisted even after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Cold War tropes continue to be (ab)used, as can be seen in multiple representations of evil Russians on screen, including Wolfgang Petersen’s Air Force One (1997), Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 (2010), Phillip Noyce’s Salt (2010), Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011), John Moore’s A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), and Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer (2014), to name just a few. All these films portray Russians in a rather similar manner: as members of the mafia or as plain criminals. Yet recently Hollywood cinema has made a striking turn regarding its portrayals of Russians, returning to the images of the Cold War. This turn and the films that resulted from it are what the collection proposes to examine. The sanctions imposed on Russia during the Ukrainian crisis in 2014 by several Western countries, including the United States, along with Trump’s admiration for Putin, Russian attempts to influence the 2016 American election, the fatal poisoning in the UK, etc., have led to a tense relationship between Russia and the Western world.

  • Bill's Guide to Week Two of the 47Th Annual Chicago International Film
Bill’s Guide to Week Two of the 47th Annual Chicago International Film Festival By Bill Stamets Special for Films for Two® My recommended films in Week Two (in “must see” order): 1.) Pina: German director Wim Wenders previously profiled Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Cuban musicians. His latest documentary introduces cinefiles to the choreography of German avant-gardist Pina Bausch. In his first use of 3-D cinematography, Wenders evokes the volume of the stage, even for performances staged in non-theatrical settings, including a tramway and an escalator. Four different works are presented. Some are revisited via archival 2-D footage. Seeing various versions adds more figurative depth to our appreciation of Bausch's work than the 3-D adds literal depth to our onscreen perception. Bausch's death during the making of the film may have lent an elegiac note to the laudatory interviews with members of her international company Tanztheater Wuppertal. They do not speak on camera during looking-into-the lens portrait sessions. The soundtrack excerpts their comments, apparently recorded off- camera, to underscore their role as voiceless dancers. Wenders channels Bausch's tactile and theoretical grasp of the body as metaphysical material for art. 2.) The Descendants: Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, Citizen Ruth) directs George Clooney as Matt King, an Hawaiian lawyer dealing with his wife hospitalized in a coma and their 10-year-old and 17- year-old daughters. Payne and his co-writers start from Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2008 novel for a truly touching male melodrama, as Clooney's character reconciles his mixed emotions about his wife.

Nouse Web Archives Review: 22 Jump Street Page 1 of 3 News Comment MUSE. Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Film & TV › Features Film Reviews TV Reviews Festivals Review: 22 Jump Street Delivering more action, more gags and more homoeroticism makes this sequel as funny as the first. Kate Barlow reviews Sunday 22 June 2014 Director: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube Running time: 112 minutes Rating: ★★★★☆ One of the most endearing features of a comedy is an ability to take the piss out of itself. 22 Jump Street certainly isn’t lacking in this quality. Its prequel didn’t hold back in mocking its own origins in TV, and now the next instalment mocks itself for being a sequel. Twists are made on the original humour: high school is now college, Korean Jesus is now Vietnamese and the drugs are now much harder to find. While these frequent throwbacks do begin to get a little tiring, the plot soon builds up and the film begins to find a voice of its own. The problem with endlessly referencing 21 Jump Street is that it makes it hard not to compare the two films, and in this scenario the second offering inevitably comes up short. 22 Jump Street returns to the college popularity stereotypes the first film so successfully and originally fought against, seeing Jonah Hill’s Schmidt return as bumbling cop and social reject, and Channing Tatum’s Jenko rise to be football jock and cop hero, emerging as a sort of hench Spider-Man.

  • A Comparison of Nick Hornby's High Fidelity and Juliet, Naked
Hugvísindasvið Modern Love: A Comparison of Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity and Juliet, Naked. Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Arnar Ásmundsson Maí 2011 Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Enska Modern Love: A Comparison of Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity and Juliet, Naked. Ritgerð til B.A.-prófs Arnar Ásmundsson Kt.: 230476-4389 Leiðbeinandi: Ingibjörg Ágústsdóttir Maí 2011 Abstract In 1995 Nick Hornby published his first novel, High Fidelity, a story about obsession, love and the complications of modern life. Hornby published Juliet, Naked in 2009, where he tackles similar topics to those in High Fidelity. A key difference between these novels is the presence of the Internet in Juliet, Naked, which is not featured in High Fidelity. A comparison of Juliet, Naked and High Fidelity offers an interesting insight into Hornby‟s vision of life before and after the spread of the Internet, and how it has affected the characters‟ obsessions, communication and their lives in general. This essay is, however, not limited to the changes the Internet has brought, as other topics are discussed in the essay‟s several chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction and is followed by a chapter containing background information on both Hornby and the novels, as well as illustrating how these novels were received by critics. The third chapter tackles a dominant theme in both books, obsession, especially male obsession with popular culture. The ensuing chapter deals with love and its complications, and how it is presented in both novels. The fifth chapter focuses on the Internet and the benefits and limitations it brings to modern life.

  • Solomon Northup and 12 Years a Slave
Solomon Northup and 12 Years a Slave How to analyze slave narratives. Who Was Solomon Northup? 1808: Born in Minerva, NewYork Son of former slave, Mintus Northup; Northup's mother is unknown. 1829: Married Anne Hampton, a free black woman. They had three children. Solomon was a farmer, a rafter on the Lake Champlain Canal, and a popular local fiddler. What Happened to Solomon Northup? Met two circus performers who said they needed a fiddler for engagements inWashington, D.C. Traveled south with the two men. Didn't tell his wife where he was going (she was out of town); he expected to be back by the time his family returned. Poisoned by the two men during an evening of social drinking inWashington, D.C. Became ill; he was taken to his room where the two men robbed him and took his free papers; he vaguely remembered the transfer from the hotel but passed out. What Happened…? • Awoke in chains in a "slave pen" in Washington, D.C., owned by infamous slave dealer, James Birch. (Note: A slave pen were where (Note:a slave pen was where slaves were warehoused before being transported to market) • Transported by sea with other slaves to the New Orleans slave market. • Sold first toWilliam Prince Ford, a cotton plantation owner. • Ford treated Northup with respect due to Northup's many skills, business acumen and initiative. • After six months Ford, needing money, sold Northup to Edwin Epps. Life on the Plantation Edwin Epps was Northup’s master for eight of his 12 years a slave.

The films will be preceded by formal introductions and followed by public discussions. You are welcome and encouraged to bring guests throughout the term! This is not a traditional class, therefore it is important for you to review the course assignments and due dates carefully to ensure that you fulfill all the requirements to earn the grade you desire. We want the Cinema Series to be both entertaining and enlightening for students and community alike. Welcome to our college film club! COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will introduce students to one of the most powerful cultural and social communications media of our time: cinema. The successful student will become more aware of the complexity of film art, more sensitive to its nuances, textures, and rhythms, and more perceptive in “reading” its multilayered blend of image, sound, and motion. The films, texts, and classroom materials will cover a broad range of domestic, independent, and international cinema, making students aware of the culture, politics, and social history of the periods in which the films were produced.
