THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD Febuary 2, 2020

Notes on the Gospel

God wants for our best. And today, we have an example of Mary and Joseph offering their most precious gift to God, to show us that as God gives, we should give.

After was born, Joseph and Mary took Him to to be presented to God at the Temple because God's Law said, "The first child whom a mother bears will be called special for God." They also worshiped God with an offering of two birds, just like God's Law commands.

A man named Simeon lived in Jerusalem. Simeon loved the Lord and waited for God to visit his people. God's Spirit filled Simeon, and told him he would see the Messiah before he died. The Spirit led Simeon into the Temple, where Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to worship. Simeon took Jesus into his arms and praised God.

The presentation of the Lord foreshadowed the ministry of the young Messiah. Many contemporaries of Jesus had particular images of the Messiah. For them, the Messiah would be both king and high priest, leading the people in true worship at the Temple. The Temple was the focal point for Jewish worship, for the people believed God truly dwelt there, but, Jesus (and the evangelists) had different ideas. The Messiah would worship God as one of the people, not above or beyond the people. He would teach the people in the Temple as a populist. After all, the Messiah came to show all God was with his people, even in their worship.

Luke presented only the laity in the scene: Simeon, the Spirit-filled worshiper, and Anna, the elderly prophetess. Simeon and Zechariah were faithful Jews. Both, according to their station, worshiped in the Temple. But, while Zechariah had the privilege of position, Simeon was full of the Spirit. Zechariah the priest did not understand the power and message of God. Simeon the lay man did.

After the sacrifice (but still within the Temple), Simeon encountered the couple and the young Jesus. In his Canticle, Simeon proclaimed the fulfillment of God's promise to himself. Now he could die in Shalom, the peace only God could give. Why? Because Simeon witnessed firsthand the universal Messiah ("the light to the nations") born from God's people (for "the glory of Israel"). Notice that Simeon made these statements in the Temple, a place of pilgrimage for faithful Jews from the Diaspora and for the Gentiles who worshiped YHWH on the courtyard outside the Temple. So, he proclaimed what God had done "in the sight of the nations. " In other words, a Spirit-filled lay man saw what God had revealed in his Temple to the faithful from all over the known world. The Messiah was here!

An estimated 10,000 pilgrims traveled from both near and far to attend Mass at the opening of the National Prayer Vigil for Life celebrated on Thursday, Jan. 23 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

The pilgrims joined 46 deacons, 303 priests, 39 bishops, and three cardinals participating in the Mass, held the evening before the annual March for Life. The principal celebrant and homilist was Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City in Kansas, chairman of the US bishops’ pro-life committee, together with Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.

In his homily, Archbishop Naumann said he was cheered at the sight of so many pilgrims for life, a powerful witness against an abortion culture which he compared to an episode of ‘The Twilight Zone,’ in which “beautiful is ugly and hideous is gorgeous.”

The archbishop also spoke of his ad limina visit with Pope Francis. During his recent trip to , said Naumann, he mentioned the controversy that erupted at the USCCB Fall General Assembly over whether or not abortion was the “preeminent” social issue of our time. Naumann said that the pope appeared confused at why this would be controversial, and re- affirmed that abortion is the most important social issue.

“The Pope is with you. He is praying for you. He supports you,” said Naumann. “My friends, the successor of Peter has our backs.” ______Bishop Conlon

Bishop Conlon is doing well. He will be visiting Marietta on Thursday and Friday. Marietta has always had a special place in his heart, and we welcome him to the Basilica.

THE BASILICA OF SAINT MARY OF THE ASSUMPTION 506 4th STREET • MARIETTA OH 45750 (740) 373-3643 February 2, 2020

Dear Parishioners,

The Holy Penitential Season of Lent will begin on February 26. This season of Lent recalls the forty years spent by the Israelites in the desert while on their way to the Promised Land. During that time, the Israelite people experienced what it meant to live in tents without a fixed home to live in. They totally lacked security. They were often tempted to return to Egypt, where at least there was a supply of bread even though it was the food of slaves. In the wilderness of the Sinai desert, God Himself provided water and food for His people. He protected them from every danger. For the Hebrews, the experience of being totally dependent on God became their path to freedom from slavery.

The Lenten season will be both an invitation for each one of us to grow and a challenge to change through prayer, fasting and good works. Lent will be a time of grace; not something to dread, but rather, it is something to celebrate. It is a wonderful opportunity for each of us to do some "spiritual housekeeping and growth."

There are things about each of us that need to change; we know it deep down in our hearts and yet we resist God’s grace which quietly invites each of us to growth. Even though we know we are often in a spiritual rut, we become comfortable in our lifestyles. The Lord tells us: “You did not call upon Me, you grew weary of Me. You burdened Me with your sins”. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that He has the power to forgive sins, and He has given that power to His Church.

We live in a society which doesn’t have a high regard for matters of Faith and morality. The weakening of the family unit, the killing of the unborn, and many other injustices continue to grow daily. There truly is an urgent need for the mercy and healing power of God.

This Lent will provide a long retreat for each one of us, and we need it! The Church is offering us a very special time to renew our relationship to the Lord and to His Church; knowing that in the words of Isaiah, “God will remember our sins no longer”. Live this Lent as though it was your first Lent – as though it was your only Lent – as though it will be your last Lent, (and for some of us, it will be)! May each one of us be renewed through the discipline of Lent. Let us prepare to go joyfully into the desert of Lent, and climb the hill of Calvary that we might rise with Jesus at Easter.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. Msgr. John M. Campbell (Rector)

Pope Francis Receives US Vice President Mike Pence

Vice President of the United States of America, Michael Richard Pence, visited Pope Francis on Jan. 24, 2020, in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace at noon.

Their meeting lasted an hour. The Vice President was accompanied by his wife, Karen, and his daughter in law, .

According to press pool reports, the VP was smiling ecstatically and Pope was in good spirits and cordial and warm.

When Pence first sat down in the papal library, he said: I wanted to extend the warmest greeting on behalf of President Donald Trump who so enjoyed his visit here.” There was an exchange of gifts. The Pope gave Pence his five papal documents, and his Message for Peace, as well as a medallion. Pence, on the other hand, gave Francis a cross made of wood from a tree in the residence of the vice president.

The Vice President is visiting Rome as he returns from Jerusalem for Holocaust Remembrance events.

On Aug. 10, 2018, according to the White House, Pence spoke with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, to discuss their mutual concern about the on-going political crisis in Nicaragua. The Vice President recognized the personal sacrifice of the church’s clergy in Nicaragua, for striving to protect human rights, defend religious freedom, and promote good-faith negotiations.” The two leaders condemned the violence which has claimed hundreds of lives and increasingly targeted the Church, and reaffirmed their support for the Nicaraguan Episcopal Conference and the entire faith community who has stood firm in support of human rights, democracy, and freedom. ______THE CATHOLIC CHURCH The Church is not simply a human institution. The Church is a sacrament of Jesus. It shares in the very being, life, and energy of Christ. The Church is the Body of Jesus. Not an institution, not an organization, not a collectivity of like- minded people. The Church is an organism made up of interdependent cells and molecules and organs. — Bishop Robert Barron

Pope Francis Blesses Two Lambs on Feast of Saint Agnes

As is traditional on the feast of the Roman martyr Saint Agnes, Pope Francis blessed two lambs on January 21, 2020, in the Vatican’s Urban VIII Chapel.

The two lambs, raised by the monks of the Trappist Abbey of Tre Fontane, were taken to the Holy Father in baskets, their head crowned with white and red roses.

Earlier in the morning, they were taken to the Basilica of Saint Agnes Outside-the-Walls, on via Nomentana, where Saint Agnes rests, killed in the 4th century at 12, for her faithful love of Christ.

The lambs’ wool will be used by the Benedictines of Saint Cecilia in Trastevere to make the palliums, which the Pope will deliver to the Metropolitan Archbishops appointed during the year, during the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29 in Saint Peter’s Basilica.

The pallium is a five-centimeters strip of fabric, which is worn on the chasuble. It is made of white wool and ornamented with six small crosses of black silk. The pallium is fixed with gem gold pins. This liturgical ornament is worn by the Pope and by the Metropolitan Archbishops in their Churches and in the Churches of their Provinces, as a sign of special communion with the Successor of Peter.

It was Paul VI who limited the attribution of the pallium to the Pope and to the Metropolitan Archbishops in 1978. Six years later, in 1984, Pope John Paul II decided that its delivery would be fixed at June 29. Henceforth they were delivered, not “imposed.” They are imposed in their local Churches by the Apostolic Nuncios, to foster the participation of the People of God in this highly symbolic ceremony. ______Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re Elected as New Dean of the College of Cardinals

Cardinal Re’s election follows the resignation of Cardinal Angelo Sodano, 92, who was elected dean of the College of Cardinals in 2005. Cardinal Re, 85, will serve a five-year term under the new term limits created by Pope Francis.

The dean of the College of Cardinals presides at the conclave for the election of the pope and represents the Holy See during the sede vacante. Because Cardinal Re is over the age of 80, he is ineligible to take part in a conclave. The responsibility of presiding over the conclave will therefore fall to 76-year-old vice-dean, Cardinal Sandri. The dean is elected by and from among the highest of these ranks, the cardinal bishops. He has the responsibility to communicate the pope’s death to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See and to the heads of nations, and he is the one who asks the pope-elect if he accepts the election, and what name he will take.

TODAY’S FEAST

The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple emphasizes, for one thing, the fact that he was like us in all things but sin. This child shared the journey each human being makes through his/her mother’s womb. Jesus was an embryo, a fetus, an unborn child. By assuming all the stages of our human journey, he also redeemed them.

This is closely related to a second key theme: we belong to God. The Presentation is also a declaration: this child is God’s. In Jesus’ case this is true in an even deeper way, because he is God’s only-begotten Son. If he belongs to the Father, so do all of us, and so do the poor, the sick, the marginalized, the oppressed, and the unborn. Human life cannot be owned by other human beings nor by the power of the state. It belongs only to God.

Celebrating the Presentation, therefore, gives each of us the privilege and obligation of proclaiming, celebrating, and serving that gift of life as it is entrusted to the care (not the ownership) of all of us.

The glory of God, which Christ shines forth to the Gentiles, is a glory reflected in every human life, no matter what its condition.

OUR LADY OF FATIMA & THE FIRST SATURDAY DEVOTION

When Lucia Santos and her cousins Francisco and Juanita Marto experienced the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima, she was told of special graces, especially at the hour of death, for those who celebrate Five First Saturdays of the month. That means one receives the Holy Eucharist, the Sacrament of Confession, and prays five decades of the Rosary. These requirements are available every Saturday morning at the Basilica. You might consider this devotion.

______Why Pope Francis’ Appointment of Cardinal Tagle Is Significant

Did Pope Francis just name his successor? Much of the commentary about the appointment of Cardinal Luis Tagle, until now archbishop of Manila, to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples put that question in first or second place. That’s speculation — about which, more later — but the appointment on its own merits is most significant; some have said that Cardinal Tagle is for Pope Francis what Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was for St. John Paul II.

The most remarkable thing about Cardinal Tagle’s appointment is that the position was not vacant. Given that Cardinal Tagle is only 62, the Holy Father must have felt a great urgency to get Cardinal Tagle into the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. The prefect has the nickname the “Red Pope”.
