  • Quantitative Portrait of Open Access Mega-Journals
Malaysian Journal of Library & Information Science, Vol. 24, no.2, August 2019: 115-131 Quantitative portrait of open access mega-journals Mohammadamin Erfanmanesh Department of Library and Information Science Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT Nowadays, Open Access Mega-Journals (OAMJs) represent a substantial part of the scholarly communication system. The current research is conducted with the aim of providing better insights into the increasingly important OAMJ phenomenon through investigation of eight reputable titles using established bibliometric methods. Results of the study showed that eight studied OAMJs were responsible for 1.87% of the total number of publication indexed in Web of Science during 2012-2016. Despite the decline in publication count of PLOS ONE over the past couple of years, it was the biggest journal in the world till 2017, when Scientific Reports overtook PLOS ONE as the most productive journal. Over 88% of the papers published in eight selected OAMJs were cited at-least once at the point in time of analysis. The highest proportions of cited and un-cited documents were seen in Scientific Reports and SpringerPlus, respectively. With regard to the three indicators, namely share of highly- cited papers, the category normalized citation impact as well as the JIF percentile, IEEE Access had by far the best performance among eight examined OAMJs. Results of the study revealed that Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Multidisciplinary Sciences, Neurosciences, Oncology and Immunology were the most commonly assigned subject categories to OAMJs’ content.

  • A Presentation of the Self-Publishing Model (SPM) As the Advent of a New Era of Scientific Communication
Self Publishing Model (SPM) A Presentation of the Self-Publishing Model (SPM) as the Advent of a New Era of Scientific Communication Author: Nour Ouda, Claus Jacob Endorsed by: Claus Jacob Edited by: Ahmad Yaman Abdin and Muhammad Jawad Nasim This manuscript is being published under the auspices of the Self Publishing Movement (SPM) to promote the free and unbiased exchange of scientific knowledge for all. The manuscript has not been refereed in order to protect the originality and to preserve the creativity of the author(s) and her/his/their ideas. Instead, it has been edited and endorsed by peers to ensure that format and content both adhere to acceptable international standards. Endorsements, criticism, comments and debate are always welcome. The intellectual property rights and copyright of this piece of original work reside with the author(s) and due credit should be given if this work is being cited. 0 Self Publishing Model (SPM) Abstract Traditional scientific dissemination via journals is problematic. It restricts the free exchange of knowledge due to financial restraints and, because of a subjective reviewing process, often impinges on authors’ originality. Eventually, important pieces of research are lost, whilst others are skewed in order to please anonymous referees. The Self-Publishing Movement (SPM) considers the free and open access to scientific knowledge as a right for all. Under the auspices of the SPM disseminating and acquiring knowledge is free of charge. The originality and creativity of authors’ work and ideas are preserved by avoiding the influence of referees. The standard linguistic and scientific quality of the work can be maintained by peer editors and endorsers before the dissemination.

  • Ranking Forestry Journals Using the H-Index
Ranking forestry journals using the h-index Journal of Informetrics, in press Jerome K Vanclay Southern Cross University PO Box 157, Lismore NSW 2480, Australia [email protected] Abstract An expert ranking of forestry journals was compared with journal impact factors and h -indices computed from the ISI Web of Science and internet-based data. Citations reported by Google Scholar offer an efficient way to rank all journals objectively, in a manner consistent with other indicators. This h-index exhibited a high correlation with the journal impact factor (r=0.92), but is not confined to journals selected by any particular commercial provider. A ranking of 180 forestry journals is presented, on the basis of this index. Keywords : Hirsch index, Research quality framework, Journal impact factor, journal ranking, forestry Introduction The Thomson Scientific (TS) Journal Impact Factor (JIF; Garfield, 1955) has been the dominant measure of journal impact, and is often used to rank journals and gauge relative importance, despite several recognised limitations (Hecht et al., 1998; Moed et al., 1999; van Leeuwen et al., 1999; Saha et al., 2003; Dong et al., 2005; Moed, 2005; Dellavalle et al., 2007). Other providers offer alternative journal rankings (e.g., Lim et al., 2007), but most deal with a small subset of the literature in any discipline. Hirsch’s h-index (Hirsch, 2005; van Raan, 2006; Bornmann & Daniel, 2007a) has been suggested as an alternative that is reliable, robust and easily computed (Braun et al., 2006; Chapron and Husté, 2006; Olden, 2007; Rousseau, 2007; Schubert and Glänzel, 2007; Vanclay, 2007; 2008).

Simulating the Effects of Irrigation over the U.S. in a Land Surface Model Based on Satellite Derived Agricultural Data 2 2,3 2 Mutlu Ozdogan ' *, Matthew Rodell , Hiroko Kato Beaudoing , and David L. Toll *corresponding author 'Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE) University of Wisconsin Madison, WI, 53706 [email protected] 2Hydrological Sciences Branch NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, MD 20771 ³Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 submitted to Journal of Hydrometeorology April 2009 Abstract A novel method is introduced for integrating satellite derived irrigation data and high-resolution crop type information into a land surface model (LSM). The objective is to improve the simulation of land surface states and fluxes through better representation of agricultural land use. Ultimately, this scheme could enable numerical weather prediction (NWP) models to capture land-atmosphere feedbacks in managed lands more accurately and thus improve forecast skill. Here we show that application of the new irrigation scheme over the continental US significantly influences the surface water and energy balances by modulating the partitioning of water between the surface and the atmosphere. In our experiment, irrigation caused a 12 % increase in evapotranspiration (QLE) and an equivalent reduction in the sensible heat flux (QH) averaged over all irrigated areas in the continental US during the 2003 growing season. Local effects were more extreme: irrigation shifted more than 100 W/m² from QH to QLE in many locations in California, eastern Idaho, southern Washington, and southern Colorado during peak crop growth. In these cases, the changes in ground heat flux (QG), net radiation (RNET), evapotranspiration (ET), runoff (R), and soil moisture (SM) were more than 3 W/m ², 20 W/m², 5 mm/day, 0.3 mm/day, and 100 mm, respectively.

  • List of Predatory Journals and Publishers
List of predatory journals and publishers Jiban Shrestha Nepal Agricultural Research Council, National Plant Breeding and Genetics Research Centre, Khumaltar, Lalitpur, Nepal Email: [email protected] The predatory publications are a big challenge, especially in developing countries including Nepal. Predatory publishing not only harms or degrades academic reputations but also wastes time, money, resources, and efforts (Shrestha et al., 2020). Predatory publications pose a danger that could undermine the quality, integrity, and reliability of published scientific research works. Predatory publications also harm the reputation of the universities and research organizations which are connected with these publications. Universities and research organizations should educate researchers, especially juniors, about the existence of predatory journals, the dangers they pose, and ways to avoid them (Shrestha, 2020). The problem of potential open access predatory or fake publications is an important issue that must be actively discussed at national, regional and world level within academic communities (Shrestha et al., 2018b). Predatory publications must be avoided or excluded while evaluating CV or biodata of researchers for job promotion and releasing the research grants. The authors should be careful about predatory or fake journals/publishers for communicating their scientific works (Shrestha et al., 2018a). The researchers should be aware of the quality of journals while publishing their research results (Shrestha et al., 2020). There is

AN EXHIBITION ON NEGLIGENCE, FRAUD, AND MEASURING INTEGRITY Edited by Dr. Thorsten Stephan Beck, Melanie Rügenhagen and Prof. Dr. Michael Seadle HEADT Centre Publications goal of the exhibition The goal of this exhibition is to increase awareness about research integrity. The exhibition highlights areas where both human errors and intentional manipulation have resulted in the loss of positions and damage to careers. Students, doctoral students, and early career scholars especially need to recognize the risks, but senior scholars can also be caught and sometimes are caught for actions decades earlier. There is no statute of limitations for breaches of good scholarly practice. This exhibition serves as a learning tool. It was designed in part by students in a project seminar offered in the joint master’s programme on Digital Curation between Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and King’s College London. The exhibition has four parts. One has to do with image manipulation and falsification, ranging from art works to tests used in medical studies. Another focuses on research data, including human errors, bad choices, and complete fabrication. A third is concerned with text-based information, and discusses plagiarism as well as fake journals and censorship.
