Gegenwärtig werden zwei Arten anerkannt, die Schwarz- schwanz-Lesbia(L. victoriae) und die Grünschwanz-Lesbia(L. nuna). Aufgrund geografischer Variation in der Schwanzfärbung und den biometrischen Merkma len bei L. nuna erscheint aber die taxonomische Trennung von Goulds Lesbia (L. gouldii) gerechtfertigt. Die Typusexemplare vonLesbia » eucharis«, die bisher als Unterart vonL. nuna mit Verbreitungsgebiet in Huänuco, Zentralperu, angesehen wurden, stammen aus den Nordanden und repräsentieren wahrscheinlich Hyb riden von L. goiddii x L. victoriae. Die zentralperuanische Population von Goulds Lesbia sollte daher als neue Unterart,L. gouldii huallagae subsp. nov., geführt werden. Sie ist durch eine stark bronzegrüne Färbung und die weißlichen Fran sen im Bauchgefieder der Männchen gekennzeichnet. Als weiteres neues Taxon wird L. gouldii aureliae subsp. nov. von Südecuador beschrieben, charakterisiert durch eine goldbronzene Färbung des Grundgefieders. Die vorliegende Studie bestätigt zudem die taxonomische Eigenständigkeit L.von nuna boliviana und L. gouldii (früher nuna) gracilis, während die Validität vonL. victoriae aequatorialis nicht durch morphometrische Merkmale gestützt wird. Morphologische Ähn lichkeiten (Weibchengefieder, Schwanzmuster, Körpermaße) deuten eine enge Verwandtschaft vonLesbia mit den Kleinschnabelkolibris(Ramphomicron) und dem Sapphokolibri(Sappho sparganura) an. The Hummingbirds of Nariño, Colombia
The hummingbirds of Nariño, Colombia Paul G. W. Salaman and Luis A. Mazariegos H. El departamento de Nariño en el sur de Colombia expande seis Areas de Aves Endemicas y contiene una extraordinaria concentración de zonas de vida. En años recientes, el 10% de la avifauna mundial ha sido registrada en Nariño (similar al tamaño de Belgica) aunque ha recibido poca atención ornitólogica. Ninguna familia ejemplifica más la diversidad Narinense como los colibríes, con 100 especies registradas en siete sitios de fácil acceso en Nariño y zonas adyacentes del Putumayo. Cinco nuevas especies de colibríes para Colombia son presentadas (Campylopterus villaviscensio, Heliangelus strophianus, Oreotrochilus chimborazo, Patagona gigas, y Acestrura bombus), junto con notas de especies pobremente conocidas y varias extensiones de rango. Una estabilidad regional y buena infraestructura vial hacen de Nariño un “El Dorado” para observadores de aves y ornitólogos. Introduction Colombia’s southern Department of Nariño covers c.33,270 km2 (similar in size to Belgium or one quarter the size of New York state) from the Pacific coast to lowland Amazonia and spans the Nudo de los Pastos massif at 4,760 m5. Six Endemic Bird Areas (EBAs 39–44)9 and a diverse range of life zones, from arid tropical forest to the wettest forests in the world, are easily accessible. Several researchers, student expeditions and birders have visited Nariño and adjacent areas of Putumayo since 1991, making several notable ornithological discoveries including a new species—Chocó Vireo Vireo masteri6—and the rediscovery of several others, e.g. Plumbeous Forest-falcon Micrastur plumbeus, Banded Ground-cuckoo Neomorphus radiolosus and Tumaco Seedeater Sporophila insulata7. -

Tropical Birding - Trip Report Ecuador Photo Tour, February 2018 A Tropical Birding SET DEPARTURE tour Ecuador Photo Tour 11-20 February 2018 TOUR LEADER: Alex Luna Report and photos by Alex Luna Booted Racket-tail at Tandayapa Bird Lodge Ecuador is a top destination for many birders and bird photographers, which is unsurprising considering there are almost 1700 species of birds in a country that you can cross from border to border in about 12 hours by car. Our journey took us through mega-diverse areas, starting with the enchanting landscapes of the Antisana Reserve, where the Antisana Volcano (18,714 ft) towered overhead, majestic Andean Condors soared, and flocks of the rare Black-faced (Andean) Ibis strutted over the grasslands. Descending onto the eastern slope of the Andes, we travelled to Guango lodge, which was our base for two nights. During our stay, we visited the notoriously misty Papallacta antennas, and with great luck the weather cleared, so we were able to take some good photos of Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe. The hummingbird feeders in the lodge also provided us with some specialties such as the incredible Sword-billed Hummingbird, a family of Torrent Ducks along the river, and a view of the colorful Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan. To appreciate a different variety of species, we continued our trip across the Andes to the western slopes, staying at Tandayapa Bird Lodge for five days. Located in one of the richest regions in flora and fauna of the world, we set out to discover the Chocó region. Through the optics of these living jewels we were able to grasp a more holistic understanding of the intricacies that constitute the ample mosaic of ecosystems, habitats, and niches that make up this wonderland of mega-biodiversity. Our travels took us from the high Andes to the Amazonian foothills, the subtropical and temperate zones, and then back over the eastern cordillera to the interAndean valley and up again over the western cordillera to the elfin and temperate zones, the subtropics, the foothills, and Pacific coastal lowlands along the west slope of the Andes—all within a compact eight- day itinerary. We experienced a lot; we were confronted with some challenges, endured some unseasonal rain and some characteristic fog, and through it all, we reveled in a good dose of wondrous beauty and special moments. 21 April ABSTRACT Our knowledge about the pollination ecology of plants globally, and especially in the tropics, is sadly lacking at a time when both plants and pollinators are experiencing sharp declines. Quantifying the pollination ecology of generalist plants in vulnerable tropical ecosystems should be a key goal of ecology. In order to do so, we must describe the pollination ecology of more systems and study how multipartite interactions with other species, for example nectar robbing, can impact plant-pollinator mutualisms. I investigated the pollination ecology of the Andean tree Oreocallis grandiflora (family: Proteaceae) at the northern and southern ends of its geographic range in Ecuador and Peru. Specifically, I quantified floral morphology, nectar properties and secretion rates, and pollinator visitation rates and community. I found that the two populations differed significantly in terms of floral morphology and nectar properties, and propose that the variation between them may be driven by differences in nocturnal pollinator community rather than by drift or isolation by distance. At both sites I observed nectar robbing by Diglossa flowerpiercers (family: Thraupidae) in O. grandiflora. I then investigated how trait-mediated indirect effects (TMIEs) of nectar robbing by Diglossa impacted nectar secretion, pollination, and reproduction in O.grandiflora in Peru using simulated nectar robbing treatments. I found that simulated nectar robbing significantly reduced the standing crop of O. grandiflora and led to chronically high nectar sucrose concentrations. I also found that robbed flowers experienced fewer visits from pollinators over all, especially by the dominant pollinator, the territorial hummingbird species Aglaeactis cupripennis. However, robbed flowers were visited by a more diverse and even community of hummingbirds. -

This diversity of habitats harbors 16.000+ vascular plants in more than 250 native families, about 5 times more species than the British Isles (in a territory with an area which is only 10% smaller). We traveled the Eastern Andes of Ecuador, enjoying comfortable lodges, exotic food, new plants, and dramatic landscapes. During 14 nights exploring this territory, we recorded about 500+ native plant species! Out of those, 35 are endemic to Ecuador and another 90+ are shared endemics: species found in Colombia (COL) or Perú (PER). Additionally, we watched and identified 102 colorful bird species, including local and difficult to see specialties such as Rufous-bellied Seedsnipe, and White-breasted Antpitta. Also we learned how these habitats nowadays face important conservation challenges. Day 1 Tuesday 25th September Travel from the UK to Quito. Day 2 Wednesday 26th September After a short drive from our hotel we arrived at one of the traditional markets, which is managed by the city, but supplied and run by rural farmers: Santa Clara Market.
