  • 1 Orang Asli and Melayu Relations
1 Orang Asli and Melayu Relations: A Cross-Border Perspective (paper presented to the Second International Symposium of Jurnal Antropologi Indonesia, Padang, July 18-21, 2001) By Leonard Y. Andaya In present-day Malaysia the dominant ethnicity is the Melayu (Malay), followed numerically by the Chinese and the Indians. A very small percentage comprises a group of separate ethnicities that have been clustered together by a Malaysian government statute of 1960 under the generalized name of Orang Asli (the Original People). Among the “Orang Asli” themselves, however, they apply names usually associated with their specific area or by the generalized name meaning “human being”. In the literature the Orang Asli are divided into three groups: The Semang or Negrito, the Senoi, and the Orang Asli Melayu.1 Among the “Orang Asli”, however, the major distinction is between themselves and the outside world, and they would very likely second the sentiments of the Orang Asli and Orang Laut (Sea People) in Johor who regard themselves as “leaves of the same tree”.2 Today the Semang live in the coastal foothills and inland river valleys of Perak, interior Pahang, and Ulu (upriver) Kelantan, and rarely occupy lands above 1000 meters in elevation. But in the early twentieth century, Schebesta commented that the areas regarded as Negrito country included lands from Chaiya and Ulu Patani (Singora and Patthalung) to Kedah and to mid-Perak and northern Pahang.3 Most now live on the fringes rather than in the deep jungle itself, and maintain links with Malay farmers and Chinese shopkeepers. In the past they appear to have also frequented the coasts.

  • The Malay World in Textbooks: the Transmission of Colonial Knowledge in British Malaya
Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 39, No.2, September 2001 The Malay World in Textbooks: The Transmission of Colonial Knowledge in British Malaya SODA Naoki* Abstract This paper examines the transmission of colonial knowledge about the Malay world from the British to the Malays in pre-war colonial Malaya. For this purpose, I make a textual analysis of school textbooks on Malay history and geography that were used in Malay schools and teacher training colleges in British Malaya. British and Malay writers of these textbooks not only shared a "scientific" or positivist approach, but also constituted similar views of the Malay world. First, their conceptions of community understood Malay as a bangsa or race and acknowledged the hybridity of the Malays. Second, their conceptions of space embraced the idea of territorial boundaries, understanding Malay territoriality to exist at three levels-the Malay states, Malaya and the Malay world, with Malaya as the focal point. Third, in conceptualizing time, the authors divided Malay history into distinctive periods using a scale of progress and ci vilization. This transmission of colonial knowledge about the Malay world began the localization of the British concept of Malayness, paving the way for the identification of Malay as a potential nation. I Introduction It is now widely acknowledged that social categories in Malaysia such as race and nation are products of the period of British colonialism. For instance, Charles Hirschman argues that "modern 'race relations' in Peninsular Malaysia, in the sense of impenetrable group boundaries, were a byproduct of British colonialism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries" [Hirschman 1986: 330].

Fiction Or Facts: Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa (The Kedah Annals) In The View Of Current Civilization Value Dr. Arba’iyah Ab. Aziz, Fadilah Abdullah, Wan Noor Faizah Wan Omar, Azyyati Anuar, Firdaus Abdul Rahman & Hasnira Hassan Faculty of Art & Design, UiTM Shah Alam Abstract Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa is a historical document about the writing of ancient Malay folklore, which mirrors the fine Malay traditional culture through the practice of high cultural moral values and customs. The essence of its contents explains that ancient/old Malay culture is rich with values which can be learned and taken as an example. The genealogy of Malay rulers have been previously analysed and discussed by scholars from different era. The translation of this account tells about its very own and unique metaphors, myths and legends. It is known that almost all ancient Malay kingdoms are connected to a particular history about their origins and ruling chronicles. Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa is the truth as well as a literary document to prove that the Malay history cannot be denied and its significance need to be understood. Thus, among the objectives of this paper work is to see whether Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa is a fictional or a factual account. Apart from that, this paper is meant to investigate whether the work is still relevant with the values of Malay modern society. Keywords: Value, fiction, facts, metaphor, civilization and thought. 81 Introduction Ancient Malay kingdoms have their own historical literary collections. There are varieties of narrations about the founding of a particular state, its progress, the golden age and the downfall.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.0 Introduction In this chapter, I review the historic perspective of the Bujang valley. I started with the historical perspective of Bujang valley and move onto Geographic Location, demographic profile and the statement of the research problem. This chapter also focuses on demography of the study area, research objectives, statement problem, and research questions, significant of the study, scope and limitation of the study respectively. 1 1.1 The historical perspective of Bujang Valley The history of the old Malay kingdom of the Bujang Valley came back to the sixth century A.D. It established and succeeded into a significant trade and commercial centre which survived up to the thirteenth century. Since of its physical location along the trade route between the Mediterranean and China, it is very important and way connection between the east countries to the west. During this period, the Valley had contact with people of different cultural, travellers and writers from India, Sri Vijaya and Khmer visited Bujang. For example Indian writers called the kingdom the State of Kataha which in Sanskrit is translated into Katahnagara, which is recalled in the Sanskrit drama Kaumudinahotsava, written in the seventh century A.D. The old Kedah State (Katah or Chieh-Cha) may have been one of the original states governed by a local political body. But some historians are of the view that during the seventh century it developed part of the Sri Vijayan Empire. Later, in 1025 A.D.

  • The Memory of the World Register: the Correspondences of Sultan Abdul Hamid and Kedah History
Kajian Malaysia, Vol. 33, Supp. 2, 2015, 53–74 THE MEMORY OF THE WORLD REGISTER: THE SULTAN ABDUL HAMID CORRESPONDENCE AND KEDAH HISTORY Mahani Musa School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, MALAYSIA Email: [email protected] From the historiographical point of view, the collection relating to the Sultan Abdul Hamid Correspondence has opened a new chapter in the written history of Kedah, particularly between 1882 and 1920. Filled with a variety of information be it politics, economy and social, this collection allows the researcher to revisit Kedah history from another angle. More importantly, the collection indicates how the palace and the elites combined their efforts and ideas to ensure the smooth operation of the state administration and at the same time to secure the sustained loyalty of the people, even when it was later placed under a British Financial Adviser appointed by Bangkok in 1905 or under Britain from 1909 onwards. The correspondence, reports, minutes and agreements compiled in this collection show the earnestness of the palace and Kedah elites in developing the economic, political, and social aspects of the state, besides keeping the good relations with the Siamese and the British in Penang. This collection reveals the wisdom of the local ruler in managing a state despite having to face many challenges. To the ruler and the elites it was paramount that Kedah's Malay identity should be upheld despite the challenge posed by western (and Thai) imperialism and colonialism. Keywords: the correspondence of Sultan Abdul Hamid, Kedah history, historiography INTRODUCTION The discovery of 14 books consisting of copies of letters written in Jawi during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah (1881–1943) in 1982 (henceforth referred as the Sultan Abdul Hamid Correspondence Collection or SAHCC) was a significant breakthrough for historians and scholars in the field of Malay studies.

Among the oldest are believed to be Hikayat Raja-raja Pasai and the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annal) by Tun Sri Lanang. There are also Hikayat Hang Tuah, Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa, Hikayat Patani and Misa Melayu. Scholars in the past have dismissed the contents of the books as myths and legends. But scholars such as O.W. Wolters and a few others who studied some of those texts such as the Sejarah Melayu and Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa believe that they contain verifiable happenings. Stories such as Raja Suran (Malay Annal), Sri Tri Buana, Demang Lebar Daun and Merong Maha Wangsa are not myths or legends but representative of personalities that really existed during certain periods of the Malay history. Hikayat Hang Tuah especially, stresses the importance of the relationships between Melaka and China and India. Those foreign policies practiced by Malay rulers in the past as told in the Raja Suran adventure was the Cola king who left the dated 1025AD Tanjore Inscription and who had belligerent relationship with the king of Srivijaya.
