43 MYTH BUSTING

It’s time to bust the top misconceptions surrounding vocational qualifications!

“Vocational qualifications are for people who don’t do well at school.” Broadly speaking, vocational qualifications start to prepare you for a specific career, whereas A Levels aim to give you a solid academic grounding in a given subject. However, some vocational qualifications can be quite academic too, depending upon the subject and the specific modules taught. Vocational qualifications revolve around coursework and – often – work experience, whereas A Levels are much more classroom-based and tend to be assessed largely via final exams. Choosing to study a vocational qualification or A Levels should not be dictated by your academic ability, but by your preferred style of learning and your career aspirations. “Vocational qualifications aren’t as good as A Levels.” Level 3 vocational qualifications are equivalent to A Levels. In fact, the Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A levels, and the top grade, Distinction* is treated as an equivalent to MYTH BUSTING an A* at A Level. “Vocational qualifications are easier than A Levels.” Do not choose a vocational qualification expecting an easy life. You will have to be organised and committed throughout your course due to the continuous assessment methods. Vocational qualifications certainly are not the lazy way to an equivalent grade in the same subject. “I cannot apply to university with a vocational qualification.” Many universities are happy to accept level 3 qualifications for entry onto a degree. In fact, a quarter of students starting at university will have studied a BTEC qualification at level 3 rather than studying A Levels. If you’re considering going to university, do some research into the entry requirements for individual degree courses you might want to apply for before finalising your course choice.
