The Statistical Office for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein performs all statistics for the two federal states required by federal and EU laws, processes the data and interprets the results.

The objective and independently compiled statistics are equally available to politics, administration, the media, companies as well as private individuals. At the same time, they are included in 's nationwide statistical reporting. In addition, the Statistical Office for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein carries out individual customer surveys and offers services in the area of data preparation and analysis.

The Statistical Office for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein has emerged from the statistical regional offices Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Since 2004 it operates as a public law institution in Hamburg and .

AREA Schleswig-Holstein is divided into eleven districts and four independent cities. In total there are 1 106 municipalities in the northernmost state. The administration is ensured by 84 offices. Schleswig-Holstein's coasts comprise about 644 km on the and 686 km on the . The largest cities are the state capital Kiel (247 943 inhabitants), Lübeck (216 318) and (88 519). The largest inhabited islands are , , Föhr, , Helgoland and . With nine inhabitants, Hallig Gröde is the smallest municipality in the country.
