CHAPTERNINE THE ARTICLES AND COVENANTS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AND THE

In1959BrendaDailyandherbrotherBillattendedRavennaHigh SchoolinRavenna,Ohio.Theyhadrecentlymovedtherewiththeir familyfromtheCanalZone,wheretheirfather,WilliamD.Daily, servedinthemilitary.WhileintheCanalZone,thesetwoyoung peoplehadlearnedconversationalSpanish.Theywereanxiousto studythelanguageattheirnewschool.Unfortunatelytheschoolwas notlargeenoughforaregularSpanishclass;however,theprincipal, WayneE.Watters,hadexperienceteachingSpanish.Hewaswilling toteachaclassbefor eschoolifBrendaandBillcouldalsogetsome otherstudentstoattend.Theyfoundseveralwillingclassmates,and soontheyhadanenthusiasticclassfunctioning. Duringtheyear,Mr.WattersfoundoutthatBillandBrendawere Latter-daySaints.Onceheknewthat,hehadseveraldiscussionswith themabouttheChurch.Ononeoccasionhementionedthathis wife’sfatherhadanearlydocumentoftheLDSChur chinhispos- session.Hetoldthemthatthefamilyhadpr eserveditthroughfour generations.Hiswife’smaidennameisV irginiaRyder,andsheisa great-great-granddaughterofSymondsRyder.Hewasan1831con -

verttotheChurchfromHiram,Ohio.1 HowSymondsRyderobtained thisdocumentisaninterestingstoryitself.2 Laterintheyear,duringaseriousillness,WayneandVirginia Wattersfearedherfatherwouldsoondie.Theythoughtthathehad nomoreuseforthedocument,andsotheygaveittoBrenda.3 They feltitwouldbeofgr eatervaluetoamemberoftheChur chthanit wastothem.Brendatookittoherfather ,andheimmediatelyr eal- izedthatitwasar ecordofsomeworth.Heconveyedittothemis - sionpresidentinOhio,whosentittoChurchheadquarterswiththe nextmissionaryreturningto. 4 TheChurchhistorianplacedit inthearchivesoftheChurch,whereresearcherscanhaveaccesstoit today. ThisdocumentisinthehandwritingofOliverCowder y5 andis threepagesinlength.Itbegins,“Acommandmentfr omGodunto OliverhowheshouldbuilduphisChur ch&themannerther eof.” Itends,“WrittenintheyearofourLord&Saviour1829—Atruecopy oftheArticlesoftheChurchofChrist&c.”6 Thebodyofthedocumentiscomposedofscriptur esfromthe BookofMormonandtheDoctrineandCovenantsinterspersedwith inspiredcommentarybyOliverCowdery.7 Throughthese,establishedseveralimportantdoctrinaltruths.First,because theworldisbecomingamor ewickedplace,thereisagreatneedto repentandbebaptized.Hethenexplainedtheproceduresforproper baptism. Second,heestablishedthatmenar etobeordainedtothepriest- hood,andhedemonstratedthepropermethodofperformingthese ordinations.ThosewhoaresoordainedaretoprayfortheChur ch andteachthemembersthetruthsofthegospel. Third,heexplainedthedoctrineconcer ningthesacrament.The membersaretomeettogetheroftentopartakeofit.Herelatedfrom thescripturestheformoftheordinance,includingtheprayersthat shouldbesaid.Healsoincludedthewar ningfrom3Nephiabout partakingofthesacramentunworthily. Fourth,hetaughtthattheChurchmembersshouldmeettogether oftentotelleachotheroftheirpr ogresstowardeternallife,andhe explainedastandardofmoralconductwhicheverymembershould live.Healsoexplainedthatthosewhowillnotr epentmustbecast outoftheChurch. 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage105

Finally,heissuedacallforallpeopletocometoChristandtake Hisnameuponthem.Iftheywillwalkuprightlybefor etheLord, thenHisgraceissufficientforthem. Thereisacloseconnectionbetweenthis1829manuscriptof OliverCowderyandsection20oftheDoctrineandCovenants.The titleofsection20inthesur vivingmanuscriptsandearlypublished copiesis“TheArticlesandCovenantsoftheChurchofChrist.”The titleofsection20asitwaspublishedinTheEveningandtheMorning Star, intheJune1832issue,isthesame,anditissimilartothetitleof OliverCowdery’searlymanuscript,“TheArticlesoftheChurchof Christ.”Section20alsocontainssomeoftheBookofMormonscrip- turesquotedbyOliverCowderyinhismanuscript.OliverCowdery’s manuscriptisanearlyforerunnertothemorecomprehensivesection 20.Thefollowingisanattempttor econstructtheeventsleadingto thecompositionofboththe1829“Ar ticles”andourpr esent DoctrineandCovenants20. Insection20areshortstatementsabouttheoriginoftheChurch, thebasicdoctrines,andtheor dinances.Therearealsostatements aboutthedutiesofmembersandbear ers.Theintentof thearticlesandcovenantswastoprovidemembersandinvestigators withasummaryabouttheChurch.Inoneshortreadingtheycould gainacomprehensiveoverviewofthewholeChurch.8 TheLordmay haveinspiredtheProphetJosephSmithtoassignOliverCowderyto writetheearly“Articles.” OliverCowderyhadwantedtoknowwhatmaterialtoputintothe “ArticlesoftheChur ch”andapproachedtheProphetforhelp. JosephSmithprayedaboutthematterandr eceivedtherevelation knownasDoctrineandCovenants18.Inverse1ofsection18we learnthattheLordgavethisrevelationbecauseof“thething”that OliverCowderydesiredtoknow.OliverCowderywantedtoknow whattowrite. TheLordtoldOliverCowderyHehadmanifestedtohimmany timesthatthethingshehadwrittenweretrue(seeD&C18:2).Oliver CowderywastheprincipalscribefortheBookofMor monasthe Prophetdictatedit. TheLordtoldOliverCowder ytorelyonthethingshehadwrit - tenthathealreadyknewweretrue(seeD&C18:3).Thatis,hewas 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage106

togettheinformationheneededforthe1829“Ar ticles”ofthe ChurchfromtheBookofMormon. TheLordsaidHeplaced“allthings. . .concerningthefoundation of[His]church”intheBookofMor mon(D&C18:4).TheLor dhad alreadyinspiredprophetstoputinthatbookthebasicprinciples OliverCowderyneededfortheearliestpr oceduralstatementofthe ChurchofChrist.TheLordtoldOliverto“buildupmychurch,upon thefoundationofmygospel”(D&C18:5).Ifhedid,thegatesofhell couldnotprevailagainsthim.NotethatOliverCowder yincluded thephrase“buildupmychur ch”intheintroductionoftheRyder document.OliverCowderythencomposedhisthree-pageversionof thearticlesoftheChurchfromBookofMormonscriptures.Thisis thesamedocumentthatSymondsRyderacquired. OliverCowderymusthavesubmittedhismanuscriptto,butthe1829Articlesweresupercededinthefirsthalfof1830 bythearticlesandcovenants.Cowdery’sdocumentremainedwith theofficialpapersoftheChurchuntilRyderacquiredtheminthe summerof1831.9 TheimportanceattachedtoDoctrineandCovenants20byearly membersoftheChurchisobviousfromthemanyhistoricalaccounts ofitsuse.JosephSmithhadthearticlesandcovenantsoftheChurch readaloudatthefirstconfer enceoftheChurchinJune1830.The membersoftheChurchthenreceiveditasthewor doftheLordby the“unanimousvoiceofthewholecongregation.”10 Thus,section20 becamethefirstrevelationofthisdispensationcanonizedbythe Church.11 Sincethattime,theleadersoftheChurchhavemadesure thatthebasicpracticesoftheChur chcorrespondwiththisrevela- tion.Possiblytheearliestexampleofthisistheissuanceoftenpriest- hoodlicensesduringtheJune9,1830,confer ence.12 JosephSmith andotherleadersreadthearticlesandcovenantstothecongregation atsucceedingconferences.Presumablytheydidthatsomembersand newconvertsmightretainintheirmindsthetruthsrevealedinit.13 SuchmenasZebedeeColtrin,OrsonHyde,A.SidneyGilbert, OrsonPratt,andothershadmanuscriptcopiesofthisr evelation. Theytooktheircopieswiththemwhentheywentonshort- aryjourneysoronpreachingassignmentstobranchesoftheChurch. TheyreadthearticlesandcovenantsoftheChurchaloudinthe meetingstheyconductedforthebenefitofthosepeople.14 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage107

Amajordivisionofsection20iscor relatedtothepriesthoodof God.Manypriesthoodcertificatesofthattimerecordedthatthe bearerhadbeenordained“accordingtotheArticlesandCovenants oftheChurch.”15 SeveralotherrevelationsintheDoctrineandCovenantsr eferto thearticlesandcovenantsoftheChurch,including28:12,14;33:14; 42:13;51:4;68:24;and107:12,63.TheLor d,ineachofthesepas - sages,requestedtheSaintstor ememberthearticlesandcovenants andtoobeytheprinciplesrevealedthere. ThearticlesandcovenantsoftheChurchmayhaveservedan additionalpurpose.Someresearchersfeelthatitmaybethecer tifi- cateofincorporationthatthestateofNewYorkrequiredofchurches. Anygroupthatwantedrecognitionasalegallyor ganizedreligious societyhadtosubmitsuchacertificate.Researchershaveneverfound anydocumentsubmittedbythisChurchinthegovernmentarchives inNewYork.Thereisevenapossibilitythatnooneeversubmitted it.16 Thebeginningversesofsection20arecertainlyreminiscentofa legaldocument,andsomethinkitmaybethemissingcertificate. Theimportanceofsection20hasnotdiminishedovertheyears. Forexample,PresidentHaroldB.Leeemphasizedtheprinciples revealedinsection20duringhisadministration.17 Also,accordingto myownstatistics,theGeneralAuthoritiessince1974citeonlysec - tions84,88,and121fr omtheDoctrineandCovenantsmor eoften thantheycitesection20.18 DoctrineandCovenants20containssomepassagesofscriptur e quoteddirectlyfromtheBookofMormon.Severalotherpassagesare paraphrasedorsummarized.Thesacramentprayersareprobablythe mostwidelyknownofthesescriptures.Moronirecordedthemin Moroni4:3and5:2,andJosephSmithpublishedthemasverses77 and79ofsection20.JosephSmithalsoincludedtheinstr uctionin Moroni6:6topartakeofthesacramentfrequentlyasverse75insec- tion20. Verse73ofsection20containsthebaptismalprayerfrom3Nephi 11:25.Thephrase“havingauthoritygivenmeofJesusChrist” appearsinallsourcesofsection20before1835,includingtheextant manuscriptsofsection20andthepublishedaccountsintheBookof CommandmentsandTheEveningandtheMorningStar.JosephSmith alteredthephrasetor ead“havingbeencommissionedofJesus 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage108

Christ”inthe1835editionoftheDoctrineandCovenants.Thatis theformoftheprayerweusetoday.JosephSmithalsoincludedthe additionalinstructionsconcerningbaptismfrom3Nephi11:23–26 inverses73and74ofsection20. Moronitaught,inMoroni3:4,howmenaretobeordainedtothe priesthood.JosephSmithincludedthesesameinstr uctionsinverse 60.Healsoplacedinverse37thepr erequisitesforbaptismthatar e giveninMoroni6:1–3.19 TheeldersaretoconductChurchmeetingsastheHolyGhost directsthem.Thisteachingcomesfr omMoroni6:9.JosephSmith publishedthissamedoctrineinverse45.Moronirecordedhisteach- ingsconcerningtransgressorsinMoroni6:7,andJosephSmith includedthismaterialinverses80through83. PresidentEzraTaftBensonsaid:“Inthetwentiethsectionofthe DoctrineandCovenants,theLorddevotesseveralversestosumma- rizingthevitaltruthswhichtheBookofMormonteaches(seeD&C 20:17–36).ItspeaksofGod,thecr eationofman,theFall,the Atonement,theascensionofChristintoheaven,pr ophets,faith, repentance,baptism,theHolyGhost,endurance,prayer,justification andsanctificationthroughgrace,andlovingandservingGod. “Wemustknowtheseessentialtruths.AaronandAmmonand theirbrethrenintheBookofMor montaughtthesesamekindsof truthstotheLamanitepeople(seeAlma18:22–39),whowere‘inthe darkestabyss’(Alma26:3).Afteracceptingtheseeter naltruths,the BookofMormonstates,thoseconvertedLamanitesneverdidfall away.(SeeAlma23:6.)”20 JosephSmithincludedalargenumberofpassagesfromtheBook ofMormoninDoctrineandCovenants20.Theplacementofthese scripturesinthearticlesandcovenantsoftheChur chaffirmsthat presentChurchleadersaretoimplementthesamedoctrinesand teachingsthattheSaviorgaveancientlytothepeopleoftheBookof Mormon.Manyofthesepassagesofscripturecomefromthebookof Moroni.WecanbeeternallygratefulthatMoroniwasgrantedthe timeandhadtheinclinationtoincludethisbookinther ecord, becauseincludingitwas“contrarytothatwhich[he]hadsupposed” (Moroni1:4). BookofMormonandthemissionofMor onitoJosephSmith.The Lordstatesinverse9thattheBookofMormoncontainsthefulness ofthegospelofChrist.Mor onirevealedthistruthtoJosephSmith inhisfirstvisittotheProphetinSeptember1823(seeJosephSmith— History1:34).TheLordfurtherstateditinDoctrineandCovenants 27:5and42:12.PresidentBensonexplainedpreciselywhatthis phrasemeans: “TheLordHimselfhasstatedthattheBookofMor moncontains the‘fulnessofthegospelofJesusChrist’(D&C20:9).Thatdoesnot meanitcontainseveryteaching,everydoctrineeverrevealed.Rather, itmeansthatintheBookofMormonwewillfindthefulnessof thosedoctrinesrequiredforoursalvation.Andtheyar etaught plainlyandsimplysothatevenchildrencanlearnthewaysofsalva- tionandexaltation.TheBookofMormonofferssomuchthatbroad- ensourunderstandingsofthedoctrinesofsalvation.W ithoutit, muchofwhatistaughtinotherscriptur eswouldnotbenearlyso plainandprecious.”21 InDoctrineandCovenants20:10,theLordusesthetestimonyof theThreeWitnessesandtheEightWitnessestodeclaretomankind thattheBookofMormonistrue.22 Thosetestimoniesarepartof everycopyoftheBookofMormon,andeveryreaderofthebookhas accesstothem.Angelswhoministeredtothewitnesses“confirmed” thetestimoniestheybear.ElderSterlingW.SilloftheSeventymade aninterestingpointaboutthepowerofthetestimonyofthese witnesses: “Isaidtomyfriend,‘Ifyouwereontrialforyourlifeandyouhad thiskindoftestimonyoutagainstyou,youwouldn’thaveachance. Thiskindoftestimonywhereelevenmensaytheysawandthey heardandtheyknowwouldbeacceptedinanycour toflaw,either humanordivine.’AndIpattedhimonthelegagainandsaid,‘Now myfriend,Ithinkyouhavegreatabilities,butifyouunderstoodthis testimonythenIdon’tthinkyou[would]haveenoughcourageto disbelieveintheBookofMormon.Inthiscase,youhavethekindof couragemylittlegranddaughterhas.Ihaveagranddaughtertwo yearsoldandsheisverycourageous.Ifyouweretoputherhereon thefloorwiththreerattlesnakesaroundhershewouldnothavethe slightestfearwhereIwouldbealmostscaredtodeath.Thedifference beingthatIknowmoreaboutthesituationthanshedoes.’AndI 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage110

wouldsayaboutanyoneinthisassemblywhounderstandsthistes - timonythathewouldnotdar edisbelievetheBookofMor monor disobeyitscounsel.”23 Verse11ofDoctrineandCovenants20addstwoadditionaltruths concerningtheBookofMormon.First,theBookofMormonproves tothepeopleoftheworldthattheBibleistr ue.Presidenttaught,“Nomancansaythatthisbook(layinghishandon theBible)istrue,isthewordoftheLord,istheway,istheguide- boardinthepath,andachar terbywhichwemaylear nthewillof God;andatthesametimesay,thattheBookofMormonisuntrue;if hehashadtheprivilegeofreadingit,orofhearingitread,andlearn- ingitsdoctrines.Thereisnotthatpersononthefaceoftheear th whohashadtheprivilegeoflearningtheGospelofJesusChristfrom thesetwobooks,thatcansaythatoneistrue,andtheotherisfalse. NoLatter-daySaint,nomanorwoman,cansaytheBookofMormon istrue,andatthesametimesaythattheBibleisuntr ue.Ifonebe true,bothare;andifonebefalse,botharefalse.”24 TheBookofMormonverifiesthetruthsoftheBibleinseveral ways.TheBookofMormontestifiesthattheBibleisatruerecordof God’sdealingswithIsrael(seeMormon7:9,forexample).Italso statesthatwickedmenhaveremovedmany“plainandprecious” truthsfromtherecord.TheBookofMormontellsofthemodern Bibleandhowearlysettlersbr oughtittotheAmericas.Also, prophetsintheBookofMor monquotemanyOldandNew Testamentpassagesintheirwritings.Finally,manyhistoriceventsin theonearecorroboratedintheother. ThesecondtruthwelearninDoctrineandCovenants20:11is thattheBookofMormonestablishestheactualityofprophetsinour ownday.PresidentBensonexplainedhowtheBookofMormondoes that: “WearetousetheBookofMormoninhandlingobjectionstothe Church.GodtheFatherandhisSonJesusChristrevealedthemselves toJosephSmithinamarvelousvision.Afterthatgloriousevent, JosephSmithtoldaministeraboutit.Josephwassurprisedtohear theministersaythattherewerenosuchthingsasvisionsorr evela- tionsinthesedays,thatallsuchthingshadceased[seeJoseph Smith—History1:21]. “Thisremarksymbolizespracticallyalloftheobjectionsthathave 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage111

everbeenmadeagainsttheChur chbynonmembersanddissident membersalike.Namely,theydonotbelievethatGodrevealshiswill todaytotheChur chthroughprophetsofGod.Allobjections, whethertheybeonabortion,pluralmarriage,seventh-dayworship, etc.,basicallyhingeonwhetherJosephSmithandhissuccessorswere andareprophetsofGodreceivingdivinerevelation.Here,then,isa proceduretohandlemostobjectionsthroughtheuseoftheBookof Mormon. “First,understandtheobjection. “Second,givetheanswerfromrevelation. “Third,showhowthecorrectnessoftheanswerreallydependson whetherornotwehavemoder nr evelationthr oughmoder n prophets. “Fourth,explainthatwhetherornotwehavemoder nprophets andrevelationreallydependsonwhethertheBookofMor monis true. “Therefore,theonlyproblemtheobjectorhastoresolveforhim- selfiswhethertheBookofMor monistr ue.ForiftheBookof Mormonistrue,thenJesusistheChrist,JosephSmithwashis prophet,TheChurchofJesusChristofLatter-daySaintsistrue,and itisbeingledtodaybyaprophetreceivingrevelation.”25 InDoctrineandCovenants20:12,theLordteachesthatGodisthe sameyesterday,today,andforever.Thisconclusioncanbedrawn becausetheBookofMor monestablishesthetruthoftheBibleand becausetherearelivingprophetsontheearth.Livingprophetsand additionalscripturearefeaturesofallpastdispensations.Thisdis - pensationisnodifferentfrompastones,andsoGodisthesame today. TheLordrevealsinDoctrineandCovenants20:13thatHewill judgethosewho“cometoaknowledge”oftheBookofMor mon. ThosewhoaccepttheBookofMormonandwhoobeythecom- mandmentsinitwill“r eceiveacrownofeternallife”(D&C20:14). ThosewhorejecttheBookofMor monwillfindthatthatdecision “shallturntotheirowncondemnation”(D&C20:15).26 OneimportanttruththattheLordrevealedinsection20isthat Hewillholdallthosewho“cometoaknowledge”oftheBookof Mormonaccountableforwhattheyknow(D&C20:13).Moronisaid hewillmeeteverypersonwhohashadknowledgeoftheBookof 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage112

MormonatthejudgmentbarofGod.InEther12:38–39,Moronisays theywillthenknowthathisgar mentsarenotspottedwiththeir blood.HetaughtthemallGodcommandedhimtoteachthem,and theyarenowaccountablefortheirownactions. InMoroni10:27–29,MoronisaystheLordwillaskeveryoneof themiftheyhadthewords“writtenbythisman.”Godwillthen declarethatHerevealedHiswordtoMoroni.Hewillalsodeclarethat Moroniwrotethetruth.MoronithenurgesthosewhohavetheBook ofMormontocometoChristandforsakeallevilsotheywon’ tbe condemned. MoronimadeathirdstatementtothereadersoftheBookof MormoninMoroni10:34.Thisisthelastverseofscriptur einthe BookofMormon.Moronipromiseshewillmeetthematthe“pleas- ingbarofthegreatJehovah,theEternalJudgeofbothquickand dead.”Judgmentwillbeapleasantexperienceforthosewhohave madetheirlivesconformtothestandardstaughtintheBookof Mormon.TheywillstandwithMor oniatthejudgmentbarofGod andreceiveacrownofeternallife(seeD&C20:14). Nephialsopromisedthathewouldmeetther eadersoftheBook ofMormonatthetimeofjudgment.In2Nephi33:11–15,Nephi atteststhattheLordwillthendeclarethatNephiwrotethetruth. Nephiurgesthereaderstoabidebytheprincipleshetaught.Ifthey willnot,hebidsthemaneverlastingfar ewell.Nephiknewthathe wouldhaveeternallife.Heknewthatthosewhoreadhisrecord wouldnothavethesamer ewardunlesstheywouldalsoobeythe truth. Jacob,whowasNephi’sbrother,alsopromisedtomeetther ead- ersoftheBookofMormonatthetimeofjudgment.Inhisaccount, Jacob6:13,hespeaksofthepleasingbarofGod.Thebarispleasing tothosewhohavenotwastedtheirprobation;however,thisbar “strikeththewickedwithawfuldreadandfear.”Theyarefearful becausetheyarefacingthecondemnationtheLordpromisedin DoctrineandCovenants20:15. AlltheBookofMor monscriptur esfoundinDoctrineand Covenants20teachthattheBookofMor monisasignificantcom - ponentoftheworkoftheLordinthisdispensation. Untiltherevelationswereputinchronologicalorderinthe1876 editionoftheDoctrineandCovenants,section20wasalwaysthe 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage113

secondrevelationinthebook,immediatelyfollowingtheLord’spref- acetothisbookofscriptur e.Section20oftheDoctrineand CovenantsintegratestheteachingsoftheBookofMormonintothe Churchofthisdispensation.Itemphasizestheeternalcovenantsand commitmentsrequiredbytheLordoftheNephitesandalsoofus.It setsthesamestandardofconductforusthattheSaviorsetduring HisministrytotheBookofMormonpeople.Itis,inreality,aconsti- tutiontoguideusintheselatterdays.
