It is insufficient to understand the discipline and practices of Ottoman educational institutions only with regulations and instructions. Therefore, we have benefited from memories, school memories and autobiographies which are important in educational history studies. In addition to these, we frequently included the publications of our researchers historians who studied the last century of the Ottoman Empire, and in light of these, we tried to analyze the case of punishment and violence in education in the last century of the Ottoman Empire and in the early years of the Republic. Due to the increase in the Muslim population, the main purpose of the mosques was to prevent the worship to be done comfortably by the crowded student groups, the emergence of new branches of science (Kırpık, 2012) and the payment of wages to the teachers (Zengin, 2002). These training activities, which can be called informal and non-formal education which has a certain space, hierarchy, curricula and continuity, which are made specific to certain areas, have assumed important functions in Islamic society during the process which will continue until the establishment of madrasahs which are organized for this purpose and which are organized for this purpose (Tangulu, Karadeniz and Ateş, 2014; Zengin, 2002). Although it is accepted that a new era started in education with the establishment of madrasahs, Pedersen says that the madrasas do not differ much from the mosques, and that the same educational activities were continued (Pedersen, 1979). -

1 The Bulgarians in America and the native-born Intelligentsia in defence of the Macedonian liberating movement (1899-1903) George Genov - PhD At the end of the 19th century the Bulgarians in North America numbered less than 1000./1/ Despite this, their presence in the patchwork ethnic picture of the New World began to be felt, since the immigrants arriving from Moesia, Thrace and Macedonia were the sons of a virtuous nation, which held sacred its love towards the fatherland, freedom and hard work. The native land was far distant, but the majority of the Bulgarian emigrants were duty-bound in their efforts aimed at realizing their national ideals./2/ Their social manifestation on American soil was focused on the timely creation of mutual aid brotherhoods and parishes. The organization of political groups such as clubs, study groups, and societies was the next higher stage in the emigrant's activity. The appearance and historical mission of these sociopolitical associations are important scholarly problems, whose answers will provide us with many unknown facts important not only as a regional phenomenon but also in the context of Pan- Bulgarian recent history. This will help us to construct another "optimistic theory" concerning the Bulgarian national mentality, in that it will provide us with examples of the exceptional patriotism shown by our fellow countrymen under conditions of a not particularly hospitable reality. The issue is particularly relevant for their descendants now living in the United States and Canada and exposed to the dangere of assimilation. It is also somewhat political in tone considering the denationalizing aspirations of the Serbian, Turkish and Greek propaganda from across the sea. -

94 Homer, S., The Founding Trauma of National Identity in the Films of Milčo Mančevski Original research article Received: 13 October 2016 The Founding Trauma of National Identity in the Films of Milčo Mančevski SEAN HOMER American University in Bulgaria Summary The Macedonian filmmaker Milčo Mančevski is adamant that there is no such thing as Balkan cinema and he is not “a Balkan filmmaker”. He has re- peatedly stated that his films are about people and not place, and insists that it is a fundamental mistake to read a film that is from somewhere as necessar- ily about somewhere. In this paper I argue, to the contrary, that Mančevski’s films are deeply rooted in a specific geopolitical space. Mančevski’s films range across genre, time and place, their experimental form disrupts narrative conventions and presents the past as discontinuous and open. The films en- gage in complicated and often indirect ways with our relationship to the past and how the past can be represented. Mančevski’s films, I contend, struggle with the “founding trauma” of national identity, that is to say, with the crea- tion of the modern Macedonian state out of the ruins of the Ottoman Empire at the beginning of the twentieth century and more recently the expulsion of the Slavic population from Northern Greece after the end of the Second World War. Furthermore, his films deploy elements of a national imaginary to construct a unique “timeless” and “mythical” Macedonian national iden- tity.
