ANNUAL REPORT

Your generosity can impact the present and sustain the future. Mission

As our parents planted for us, so we plant for those who come after us. This teaching has been, and continues to be, an important part of our heritage and tradition. Accordingly, we make a promise that a strong and vibrant Jewish community will be here for our children, for their children and their children’s children as it was for us. We will make this possible through Endowment Funds that ensure the continuity and vitality of Jewish life in Central New York.

The mission of The Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York, Inc. is to endowment funds to ensure the continuity of Jewish life and meet the changing opportunities and needs of both the local and worldwide Jewish community.

Goals of the Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York g Provide donors the ability to fulfill their philanthropic Jewish interests with opportunities for giving that are simple and meaningful. g Serve as the local depository of Endowment Funds for the entire Central New York Jewish community. g Assist donors in identifying programs and organizations that can benefit from endowment funding. g Create a philanthropic environment to make giving relevant and meaningful to people of all ages. g Function in a manner consistent with the best principles, traditions, and teachings of our people. g Operate with support from and support for the Jewish Federation of Central New York. To Our Community

We are pleased to report that the Jewish Community Foundation administered approximately $18,868,000 in assets in its 2019-2020 fiscal year. This is an increase of almost $1,816,000. In addition, we have received promises of over $2,900,000 through planned giving.

We distributed $2,000,000 to a multitude of charities—almost $260,000 more than last year. The donor advised fund is a valuable vehicle for people to use to distribute funds to their favorite charities.

Our investment portfolio is managed by The Vanguard Group and American Funds, under the supervision of our investment committee, a dedicated group of volunteers who watch and research trends to maximize returns.

This year we contributed $250,000 to the Federation’s annual campaign. Those funds helped improve the lives of so many people and institutions in our community-- teen funders, synagogues, educational groups, agencies and organizations that promote our traditions and values.

Our Board thanks the donors and volunteers who have contributed so much to making this Foundation the success it has become. There is much hard work yet to be done, and we welcome your contributions and cooperation.

All data as of June 30, 2020. All numbers are approximate.

3 From the Foundation Board of Trustees Neil Bronstein, Chair

Times of crisis are also times when supporters emerge who want to make a difference in their community. Right now, when people are feeling out of control, supporting a nonprofit provides a source of inspiration and empowerment. That is why the Foundation is working hard to invite in new supporters to be part of changing the world for the better. We are proud of the fact that the Foundation has been able to contribute almost $250,000 to the Federation both last year and this year. That is a direct result of our prudent investing and the continued generosity of our fund-holders. We are proud of the fact that our stewardship of our community’s resources has been successful. We are proud of the fact that so many Neil Bronstein BOARD CHAIR members of our community have come to value the Foundation and see it as an integral part of our community’s future. As the country deals with ever-greater personal loss and stress, charitable organizations can no longer do business as usual. The line between supporters and the supported has grown hazier. All of us will need help, and all of us will need to do our best to provide help to others. In the weeks and months ahead, nonprofits will need a major infusion of cash to keep staff on the payroll, to pay rent and utilities, to provide a semblance of services during this period of social isolation, and, simply, to survive. No one knows what will happen in the longer term, or which organizations will survive. But the one thing we do know is that the Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York is in it for the long haul, that we will continue to do our best to wisely invest the funds with which we are entrusted, and we will provide a way for those who care about our community to have the greatest impact on the wide range of issues that they care about. On behalf of the Board of the Foundation, I want to express our sincerest thanks to our fundholders and donors for your trust and your belief in our mission. With your faithful financial contributions over the years, you’ve demonstrated your deep commitment to our work of ensuring the continuity and vitality of Jewish life in Central New York.

7 State of the Foundation Michael Balanoff, Executive Director

To work for and to lead a Jewish organization is fundamentally an act of hope. It represents a belief in core values, a commitment to enhancing Jewish life in America and desire to make a more meaningful and better world for our children and grandchildren. To work for the Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York is to stand on the shoulders of giants. Thanks to the foresight of Alex Holstein and Linda Alexander and the visionary women and men who are our Foundation’s trustees past and present, as well as our donors, the Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York will allow our community to remain stable in the current unprecedented maelstrom of COVID-19 and continue to provide vital services to the Jewish Michael Balanoff EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR community, locally, nationally and internationally. Building a strong, sustainable Jewish community is part of our vision. At the Foundation, we never lose sight of what’s really important – and it’s not always measured in dollars. It’s about helping people. Let me share a true but anonymized story with you. The coronavirus has stood the world on its head. There is a very generous woman in our community. For she took on leadership positions with the Federation and other institutions in the community. She created an endowment fund at the Foundation to provide meals for seniors through the JCC lunch program. Then the pandemic hit. Suddenly, this very same woman, who had done so much for others, found herself alone, with no family living locally, and facing a “stay at home” order. The very program she endowed was shuttered. Our community, however, offers a kosher meals on wheels program through the Jewish Family Service, supported by Federation, which in turn is sustained by the Foundation. Thanks to this program, not only did this fine lady receive meals during the quarantine, but also had someone checking on her and showing her a friendly face three times a week when the meals were delivered. If there is one thing we have learned from the pandemic, it is the vital importance of having the vision and wisdom to build endowments to create solid financial foundations for the Jewish future. More and more, Central New Yorkers are turning to us to find tax-wise solutions, which enable them to make even bigger contributions to the causes they care about. Thanks to the careful stewardship of our Investment Committee, the Foundation continues to grow, expand, and thrive, and our progress shows no signs of stopping in the years to come. The numbers reported tonight give you a sense of the difference we have made this year. The Foundation contributed almost a quarter of a million dollars to the Federation campaign this year and last, allowing us to continue to support vital services in the areas of Jewish life and Jewish education. We look forward to achieving more in the years to come, as we work to help individuals and institutions in our community integrate legacy giving into their philanthropic culture to assure their sustainability well into the future. Our successes in fiscal year 2020 are stepping stones to an even brighter future.

8 Unrestricted Endowment Funds

Endowment funds can be restricted to benefit a single synagogue, agency or organization or can be part of the Foundation’s Unrestricted Endowment Fund for disbursement to meet the greatest future needs of our Jewish community. Endowment funds may be established with a minimum gift of $10,000. These funds are invested for growth through the careful financial management of professionals and the oversight of the Board at the JCFCNY.

18 B’nai Mitzvah Funds

We Can Be Very Proud of Our Teen Philanthropists Under the direction of Teen Funder coordinator, Jeffrey Scheer, the Teen Philanthropists met in November 2019 to consider grant requests to charities from a Pooled Fund. Over the past twelve years, the Teen Funders have made grants of over $55,000. This year, they made grants to the following four programs: American Friends of Orr Shalom – to provide startup kits of new seasonally appropriate clothes and personal items for at-risk Israeli children and youth at Orr Shalom, which works to help them to realize their potential and their right to grow up loved, protected and respected, individual and special, in small therapeutic frameworks. Make-A-Wish Central New York– to provide postcards as touch points for Wish Kids during the time they have to wait for their wish to be granted. Noah’s Care Bags – Established by Noah Satterlee in 2019 to give travel-sized toiletries to children’s hospitals for the parents of children who are sick. Syracuse City Ballet – to provide an ASL interpreter for the Syracuse City Ballet’s judgement-free theater experience for people with sensory, social or learning disabilities and fidgets to allow the sensitive audience members to focus their body on a physical activity, allowing their brain to follow the ballet on stage.

21 Directors’ Centennial Fund

The Directors’ Centennial Fund was established by members of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees to provide long-term financial support to the Jewish community of Central New York through the end of the 21st century. Current and past board members made commitments to fund the community, over and above PACE funding, on both an immediate and testamentary basis. The initial goal of $2.5 million was successfully achieved and subsequent goals were also met, so that the fund now has $4-5 million in assets.
