Empower your giving and ensure your legacy. ANNUAL REPORT Your generosity can impact the present and sustain the future. Mission As our parents planted for us, so we plant for those who come after us. This teaching has been, and continues to be, an important part of our heritage and tradition. Accordingly, we make a promise that a strong and vibrant Jewish community will be here for our children, for their children and their children’s children as it was for us. We will make this possible through Endowment Funds that ensure the continuity and vitality of Jewish life in Central New York. The mission of The Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York, Inc. is to create endowment funds to ensure the continuity of Jewish life and meet the changing opportunities and needs of both the local and worldwide Jewish community. Goals of the Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York g Provide donors the ability to fulfill their philanthropic Jewish interests with opportunities for giving that are simple and meaningful. g Serve as the local depository of Endowment Funds for the entire Central New York Jewish community. g Assist donors in identifying programs and organizations that can benefit from endowment funding. g Create a philanthropic environment to make giving relevant and meaningful to people of all ages. g Function in a manner consistent with the best principles, traditions, and teachings of our people. g Operate with support from and support for the Jewish Federation of Central New York. To Our Community We are pleased to report that the Jewish Community Foundation administered approximately $18,868,000 in assets in its 2019-2020 fiscal year. This is an increase of almost $1,816,000. In addition, we have received promises of over $2,900,000 through planned giving. We distributed $2,000,000 to a multitude of charities—almost $260,000 more than last year. The donor advised fund is a valuable vehicle for people to use to distribute funds to their favorite charities. Our investment portfolio is managed by The Vanguard Group and American Funds, under the supervision of our investment committee, a dedicated group of volunteers who watch and research trends to maximize returns. This year we contributed $250,000 to the Federation’s annual campaign. Those funds helped improve the lives of so many people and institutions in our community-- teen funders, synagogues, educational groups, agencies and organizations that promote our traditions and values. Our Board thanks the donors and volunteers who have contributed so much to making this Foundation the success it has become. There is much hard work yet to be done, and we welcome your contributions and cooperation. All data as of June 30, 2020. All numbers are approximate. 3 From the Foundation Board of Trustees Neil Bronstein, Chair Times of crisis are also times when supporters emerge who want to make a difference in their community. Right now, when people are feeling out of control, supporting a nonprofit provides a source of inspiration and empowerment. That is why the Foundation is working hard to invite in new supporters to be part of changing the world for the better. We are proud of the fact that the Foundation has been able to contribute almost $250,000 to the Federation both last year and this year. That is a direct result of our prudent investing and the continued generosity of our fund-holders. We are proud of the fact that our stewardship of our community’s resources has been successful. We are proud of the fact that so many Neil Bronstein BOARD CHAIR members of our community have come to value the Foundation and see it as an integral part of our community’s future. As the country deals with ever-greater personal loss and stress, charitable organizations can no longer do business as usual. The line between supporters and the supported has grown hazier. All of us will need help, and all of us will need to do our best to provide help to others. In the weeks and months ahead, nonprofits will need a major infusion of cash to keep staff on the payroll, to pay rent and utilities, to provide a semblance of services during this period of social isolation, and, simply, to survive. No one knows what will happen in the longer term, or which organizations will survive. But the one thing we do know is that the Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York is in it for the long haul, that we will continue to do our best to wisely invest the funds with which we are entrusted, and we will provide a way for those who care about our community to have the greatest impact on the wide range of issues that they care about. On behalf of the Board of the Foundation, I want to express our sincerest thanks to our fundholders and donors for your trust and your belief in our mission. With your faithful financial contributions over the years, you’ve demonstrated your deep commitment to our work of ensuring the continuity and vitality of Jewish life in Central New York. 4 Who has a Donor Advised Fund?
