Third Sunday of Lent Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma March 15, 2020 SAINT WILLIAM CATHOLIC CHURCH / OUR LADY OF GRACE CATHOLIC CHURCH FORT LUPTON, CO

Note from Your Pastor

Week #3 - The Sabbath was made for man (Mk 2.)

During those weeks as the shelves of the stores with sanitizers & toilet papers become empty, let’s not forget to also increase our amount of Faith, Hope and Charity.

I have always found it so hard to sympathize with the people who are far away from me, no matter how much they are suffering. As entire countries become quarantined, let’s not abandon our charity. Out there behind those borders are people who look like you and they suffer as you suffer - different kinds of pain. Say a prayer for that John and for that Theresa from somewhere out there. God’s angels will bring your prayers to them, and God knows how much they need it now.

Your Brother in Christ, Fr.

Virtue: Inner Peace

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. For children it is a way to learn. Something we all need to remember, and then imitate more in this fast paced world is the grace and saving balm known as the inner peace of Our Lady. In her litany it is the final crowning title “Queen of Peace.” We tend to think of peace as something the world needs and that is certainly true, every day the world is filled with strife and pain. The best way to bring peace to the world is to practice it in our own lives. Pray, during Lent this year to be able to imitate the inner peace of Our Lady which will bring us and others to happiness and joy Taken from FMA Focus

Virtud: Paz interior

Prayer is at the heart of the Christian life. Given that we are weak and even sinful human beings, how can it be that God has anything to do with us? What does it mean to have a personal relationship with God? Why is God so silent and hidden? How do we grow in prayer? Personal Prayer: A Guide for Receiving the Father’s Love brings the depth of human experience together with the Catholic tradition of prayer to present the path to an intimate and vulnerable relationship with God. Experienced spiritual directors Fr. Thomas Acklin, OSB, and Fr. Boniface Hicks, OSB, explore the many forms of Catholic prayer and demonstrate that vulnerability is essential to growing in relationship with God. Rich with the wisdom of Scripture, Catholic teaching, and the writings of the saints, Personal Prayer is an exhaustive guide for priests, religious, and laity desiring to receive the Father‟s love in a profoundly personal way.

“In a sense, this is a „how to‟ book of the best sort: a simple, practical guide for learning how to pray. But it‟s also vastly more than that: An eloquent, intimate, and deeply persuasive invitation to seek out a personal relationship with the Father who made us, and to master the art of immersing ourselves in the love of God.” Emmeritus Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.

You can find this book and many other great spiritual guides at: stpaulcenter.com and Emmaus Road Publishing Check out all our great books in your parish Library!!

PRO-LIFE DISCUSSION

To correspond with Father‟s comments in a bulletin insert regarding the Coronavirus, this Discussion is an effort to obtain and include as many up-to-date facts as possible about the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This is not to cause alarm but to inform what is known about this rapidly changing situation. The following are the known facts as of March 9th, 2020: Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. In humans, several Coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) was first identified in December 2019 in the central Chinese City of Wuhan. On February 25th the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pre- vention (CDC) alerted Americans to begin preparing for the possible spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This alert was issued after infections surfaced in countries around the world, spreading to all continents except Antarctica. Dr. , Director of The CDC‟s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease stated, “The data over the past week about the spread in other countries has raised our level of concern and expectation that we are going to have community spread in the U.S.” Dr. Messonnier cautioned, “What is not known is how severe a U.S. outbreak might be.” Also on February 25th, Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC‟s Principal Deputy Director said, “It‟s not a question of if. It‟s a question of when and how many people will be infected.” U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams added, "Caution is appropriate. Preparedness is appropriate. Panic is not." On February 26th the first community spread of COVID-19 was detected in northern California. On February 29th the first death from COVID-19, with no known origin, was confirmed in Washington state. As of March 5th, a number of people have died from the virus, including those in a care facility in Kirkland, a suburb of Seattle, Washington. The CDC has emphasized from the beginning that this is a rapidly changing situation, both here and abroad and we, as a society, should prepare for disruptions. There should be personal, workplace and community preparedness. That includes general personal emergency-preparedness supplies of at least a 3-month supply of prescription medicines and over-the-counter medications including supplements. Dr. Messonnier advises the public to only trust scientific documentation from credible sources like the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO). On March 5th, Congress approved an $8 billion Coronavirus emergency funding bill. The bill was signed March 6th.

As of this writing, there are more than 500 presumptive cases total in the and more than 100,000 worldwide. Those numbers will assuredly go up as more people are tested. As of March 9th, there was still a shortage of test kits available for adequate testing. There is currently no vaccine to prevent Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). Both the CDC and WHO recommend practicing the following to, at the very least, help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases: Wash and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your hands. Hands can transfer the virus. Disinfect surfaces to prevent transmitting the virus. Stay home from work, school, church or a planned event if you feel sick, especially if you have a fever. If you have been asked to self-quarantine, do so. In general, follow good respiratory hygiene by covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the tissue immediately. Practice social distancing by maintaining a distance between yourself and anyone coughing or sneezing to reduce the spread of contagious infections. The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of respiratory diseases including, COVID-19. The availability and use of facemasks is crucial for first responders, health workers and caregivers who are in close settings at home or in a health care facility.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, tiredness, dry cough. Some experience aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually. Most people recover from the disease without needing special treatment. However and most notably, older people and those with underlying medical conditions are likely to have the infection develop into a serious illness. If you have a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical care. It is strongly suggested to call your health care provider in advance with your relevant health issue. This will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also help to prevent possible spread of COVID-19 and other viruses. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority, including the CDC and WHO, on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. The Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that public health officials will continue to provide evidence-based guidance to help countries and individuals assess and manage their risk in order to make informed decisions accordingly.

The American people need confident, consistent and factual information from their leadership in order to prepare for a potential risk involving this contagious disease. The American people do not need confusing conflicting political messaging. The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control understand many people in the United States are concerned about this virus and how it will affect them. Risk depends on exposure. Go to the CDC and WHO websites and your national and local public health authority to stay aware of the latest credible information of the COVID-19 outbreak. Take care of your health and others by staying informed.
