  • UMBC Alumnae Racing to Develop Coronavirus Vaccine
Newsletter SPRING 2020 To our UMBC/Meyerhoff families: We hope you and your families are all doing well during this strange and stressful time of Covid- 19. Although the world has changed quickly with so many things shut down and many of us sheltering at home, we hope this newsletter will represent a ray of sunshine during a dark and difficult time. Please enjoy this positive representation of our student and alumni community. MPA Board UMBC Alumnae Racing to Develop Coronavirus Vaccine Kizzmekia Corbett ’08, M16, biological sciences, says it feels like she’s “living in a constant adrenaline rush.” Maybe that’s because she and her team at the Vaccine Research Center at the National Insti- tute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases have been working around the clock for weeks. They’re racing to develop a vaccine for the coronavirus faster than it can race across the globe. “To be living in this moment where I have the opportunity to work on something that has imminent global importance…it’s just a surre- al moment for me,” Corbett says. Despite it feeling surreal, the advances Corbett and her team are making are very real, and they’re setting records. “We are making better progress than I could have ever hoped for,” she says. After three months of studies in test tubes and in animals, the vaccine her team developed is about to enter a phase I clinical trial, a crucial hur- dle on the way to FDA approval. Read the complete article about Kizzmekia and her team’s efforts to develop a Covid-19 vaccine in the latest UMBC magazine at https:// Kizzmekia Corbett, NIH magazine.umbc.edu/umbc-alumnae-racing-to-develop- coronavirus-vaccine/.

  • 2018 National Theme Announcement
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wreaths Across America Announces 2018 Theme “Be their witness.” MAINE and Washington, D.C. — Feb. 27, 2018 — Each year, millions of Americans come together to REMEMBER the fallen, HONOR those that serve and their families, and TEACH the next generation about the value of freedom. This gathering of individuals and communities takes place in local and national cemeteries in all 50 states as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. Each year, a new theme is chosen to help supporters focus their messaging and outreach in their own communities. Today, the national nonprofit announces the theme for 2018 is “Be their witness.” The inspiration for this year’s theme stems from the 2009 drama “Taking Chance,” which was based on the experiences of U.S. Marine Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl, who escorted the body of a fallen Marine, PFC Chance Phelps back to his hometown in Wyoming from the Iraq War. “I was deeply impacted by this story and found it difficult at times to fathom the burden this young man carried in his task. Lt. Col. Strobl volunteered to be a witness for PFC Phelps, and as the movie so eloquently states, he is now responsible in no small part for PFC Phelps’s legacy,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America. “Through the Wreaths Across America program, we are ensuring that the lives of our men and women in uniform are remembered, not their deaths. It is our responsibility as Americans, to be their witness and to share their stories of service and sacrifice with the next generation.” The millions of volunteers who devote so much of themselves to raise awareness for the mission to Remember, Honor, Teach, in their own communities utilize the annual theme when planning local events and activities in preparation for National Wreaths Across America Day, which will take place this year on Saturday, Dec.

Phoenix City Council Phil Gordon, Mayor Thelda Williams, Council District 1 Peggy Neely, District 2 Bill Gates, District 3 Tom Simplot, District 4 Claude Mattox, District 5 Sal DiCiccio, District 6 Michael Nowakowski, District 7 Michael Johnson, District 8 Friends, It gives me great pleasure to present the Tree and Shade Master Plan, which describes the important role trees play in creating a healthier, more livable and prosperous Phoenix. This nation and this state are at an economic crossroad. We can cut and run, or we can work our way through these challenges, by letting cities make the smart investments and good choices that will make the biggest difference and have the most immediate impact. Planting trees and caring for them are two of the smartest investments we can make -- providing shade, reducing energy costs, cleaning the air, reducing greenhouse gases that cause global warming, capturing polluted urban runoff, improving water quality and adding beauty to our neighborhoods. The urban forest is a critical component of our infrastructure – one that increases in value over time. The Tree and Shade Master Plan provides a vehicle in which we can move toward achieving the Green Phoenix Initiative, and will help us become the first carbon neutral city in the country. Phoenix will become a national and global leader in living infrastructure. This will require more than just planting trees; this will require hard work and cooperation among City government, residents, and businesses in our community. It will require commitment from each of us. We all have an important role to play in this effort.
