It was of him that Shelley said: "Is it not odd that the only truly generous person I ever knew who had money enough to be generous with should be a stockbroker? He writes poetry and pastoral dramas and yet knows how to make money, and does make it, and is still generous." <b>Biography</b> Smith was born in London, the son of a London solicitor, and the fifth of eight children. He was educated at Chigwell School with his elder brother James Smith, also a writer. Horace first came to public attention in 1812 when he and his brother James (four years older than he) produced a popular literary parody connected to the rebuilding of the Drury Lane Theatre, after a fire in which it had been burnt down. The managers offered a prize of £50 for an address to be recited at the Theatre's reopening in October. The Smith brothers hit on the idea of pretending that the most popular poets of the day had entered the competition and writing a book of addresses rejected from the competition in parody of their various styles. James wrote the parodies of Wordsworth, Southey, Coleridge and Crabbe, and Horace took on Byron, Moore, Scott and Bowles.

Shelley’s Poem Ozymandias in Russian Translations Dmitry Nikolayevich Zhatkin †*and Anna Anatolyevna RyabovaÌ Abstract The article presents a comparative analysis of Russian translations of P.B.Shelley’s poem Ozymandias (1817), carried out by Ch. Vetrinsky, A.P. Barykova, K.D. Balmont, N. Minsky, V.Ya. Bryusov in 1890 – 1916. These translations fully reflect the peculiarities of the social and political, cultural and literary life in Russia of the late 19th – early 20th Centuries, namely weakening of the political system, growing of interest to the culture of Ancient Egypt, and strengthening of Neoromanticism in opposition to Naturalism in literature. In the process of the analysis, we used H. Smith’s sonnet Ozymandias, P.B. Shelley’s sonnet Ozymandias and its five Russian translations. The methods of historical poetics of A.N. Veselovsky, V.M. Zhirmunsky and provisions of the linguistic theory of translation of A.V. Fedorov were used. The article will be interesting for those studying literature, languages, philology. Keywords: P.B. William Hazlitt (who was a contributor) described the journal as “obnoxious” in its day (Complete Works 12. 379), and in the following century, it was usually regarded as a failure or, at least, a disappointment—something that never really came together before it fell apart. In 1910, Barnette Miller described it as “a vague, up-in-the-air scheme, wholly lacking in coordination and common sense” (113). Metaphors of death and still-birth pervade the twentieth-century criticism: according to C. L. Cline “The Liberal died with the fourth number” (247); Leslie P. Pickering summarises the project thus: “in as meteoric a manner as it lived, so did the journal die, bearing with it to its untimely grave the ruined hopes of its progenitors, until now its name conveys but little to the minds of the many” (7-8). The seminal study by William H. Marshall declared, “the real question does not concern the causes of the failure of The Liberal but the reason that any of the participants thought that it could succeed” (212). In Richard Holmes’s biography of Shelley, the journal “folded quietly . after only four issues, the final collapse of Shelley’s original Pisan plan” (731); in Fiona MacCarthy’s biography of Byron, the Liberal was a “critical and financial disaster” and, after Byron’s final contribution, it simply “folded” (456).

    Book Reviews ▪ 1057 EMMA PEACOCKE. Romanticism and the Museum. Palgrave Studies in the Enlightenment, Romanticism and the Cultures of Print. New York: Palgrave, 2015. Pp. 195. $90.00 (cloth). doi: 10.1017/jbr.2015.164 Emma Peacocke’s Romanticism and the Museum is a well-researched and carefully put together study of the place of the museum in romantic-era Britain. She convincingly argues for the im- portant role played by the museum in shaping the British public sphere and national commu- nity in response to the trauma of war with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. It does much to synthesize and bring to a wider audience the arguments of other critics about the ways in which the idea of the museum in this era evolved in direct competition with the dominant French paradigm of the Louvre. Its four chapters offer case histories of the museum in British romantic writing—in William Wordsworth, Walter Scott, Maria Edgeworth, and a group of journalists and poets responding to the Elgin marbles controversy, principally Lord Byron and Horace Smith. Collectively these chapters point to the significance of the lit- erary and journalistic representation of the museum as a crucial space for historicizing impulses to emerge, and with them reflections on the state of the nation. Individually, their close read- ings and careful research give to these chapters a fresh view of familiar texts and writers by jux- taposing them with what were, until recently, neglected archives of literary and journalistic writing. Since (unlike its French counterpart) the British idea of the museum and especially the museum of natural science is largely a Victorian invention, this book digs back to unearth a prehistory of the formation of the museum as a recognizably modern institution.

He possesses the magical power of transporting the reader into an alternative world with the unique use of metaphors and imagery. His personal sadness was translated into sweet songs that are echoed in the entire world defying all boundaries and straddles. One of the most renowned works of Shelley, Ozymandias is a sonnet that challenges the claims of the emperors and their empires that they are going to inspire generations to come. It glorifies the timelessness of art. The all-powerful Time ruins everything with its impersonal, indiscriminate and destructive power. Civilisations and empires are wiped out from the surface of the earth and forgotten but there is something that outlasts these things and that is art. Even though there were many provocateurs that fueled stereotypes of the East, my study hones in on the poems Dy Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Through a literary analysis of Coleridge's Kubla Khan and Sheliey’s Ozymandias, efforts are made to reach the conclusion whether Coleridge and Shelley misrepresent the Orient. 1 argue that the works of these highly celebrated poets adhere to the underlying stereotypes popular during the Romantic Era, thus raising issue with the reliability—or raiher unrenai'-liiy—of their works. In addition to analyzing representations, I examine travel literature within the cultural and historical context of their lives to better understand influences that shaped their perspectives and informed their writing.

The Curran Index includes additions and corrections to that listing, as well as a listing of poetry published between 1821 and 1854. EDITORS: Writing of Francis Foster Barham, both the DNB and the new Oxford DNB incorrectly claim that Barham and John Abraham Heraud edited NMM. In fact, neither man was at any time or in any way connected with NMM. The error apparently can be traced to A Memorial of Francis Barham, ed. Isaac Pitman, published in London in 1873, two years after Barham’s death, and it can be explained by a study of capitalization: what Barham and Heraud edited was a new series of the Monthly Magazine, not the New Monthly (the DNB has it right in its biography of Heraud). The third and final series of the Monthly, with a minimal change in its sub-title, started in 1839, with Barham and Heraud as its editors; Barham stayed only a year as editor, Heraud three years.     CHAPTER V Thackeray as a Reader and Critic of Poetry Although Thackeray was undoubtedly better qualified for criticism of fiction than for that of poetry, his qualifications for critically assessing the latter literary kind were not negligible. As the list of his reading shows, his great asset was his extensive knowledge of the works of a very great number of poets of all ages and several countries. Though very important, however, this endowment was not the only one he possessed. Besides reading poetry he also produced it: since his schooldays he had always amused himself by composing verses in his private capacity, and during his literary career he produced and published about one hundred poems, one fifth of which were on political subjects and written for Punch, the rest being poems of various kinds, ballads, love-songs, occasional verses, imitations and paraphrases of classical or French and German poets, parodistical and satirical poems, and so forth. The merits and demerits of his poetry have been evaluated by several Thackerayan scholars (especially Melville, Saintsbury, the authors of CHEL and Ray), whose conclusions may pass unchallenged. They have pointed out that he did possess a certain com­ mand of the verse form (though his rhymes "are often appalling" and his metre "not always perfect", as Melville has shown1) and a not very great, but genuine poetical talent, and that some of his poems are possessed of distinction, the best of these bearing the hall-mark of his individuality.2 As we know from his own statements, Thackeray was a severe critic of his own poems (often entirely revising them after publication, as Melville has pointed out3).

  • Ozymandias, by Percy Bysshe Shelley
    Ozymandias, by Percy Bysshe Shelley In A Nutshell Late in 1817 Percy Shelley and his friend Horace Smith decided to have a sonnet competition – that's right folks: a sonnet competition! For the subject of their sonnets, Shelley and Smith chose a partially-destroyed statue of Ramses II ("Ozymandias") that was making its way to London from Egypt, finally arriving there sometime early in the year 1818. In the 1790's Napoleon Bonaparte had tried to get his hands on the statue, but was unable to remove it from Egypt. That's partly because it weighs almost 7.5 tons. Shelley, like Napoleon, was fascinated by this giant statue. Here's a picture of it. Shelley published his poem in January of 1818 in The Examiner, a periodical run by his other friend Leigh Hunt (pronounced "Lee"). Smith published his poem less than a month later, with a title almost as long as the poem itself: "On A Stupendous Leg of Granite, Discovered Standing by Itself in the Deserts of Egypt, with the Inscription Inserted Below." You can take a look at Smith's poem here. While Shelley has a reputation for radical and experimental poetry, "Ozymandias" is a pretty "tame" poem compared to many of his other works; it is written in a well-known and widely-used form – a fourteen-line sonnet – and doesn't say anything too offensive like "We should all be atheists" (Shelley was expelled from Oxford for writing a pamphlet advocating just this).
