  • The Waldensian Review
THE WALDENSIAN REVIEW No. 115 Winter 2009 Editor: Mrs Erica Scroppo Newbury, 85 St Andrew’s Road, Cambridge CB4 1DH. Telephone 01223-315753, email [email protected] From the Editor Dear Friends and Supporters, This is not my usual letter to our beloved and faithful readers. I am of course going to thank you once again for your generosity, for your support, for your thoughts and prayers. I will of course as usual further on let you know about old and new friends, about old and new projects, about Italy and the Walden- sian–Methodist Church. To start with, though, I would like to draw your attention to the growing costs of printing and posting the Waldensian Review. We all agree it is an excellent way to keep in touch, we have fans in at least three continents and I would feel really sad if I had to stop editing and producing this little magazine which is by now an institution, this issue being the 115th! Nevertheless since the dona- tions are dropping and I don’t need to explain why our revenue in interest and investment is at the moment virtually nonexistent, we cannot justify spending a considerable sum of our small income on producing a newsletter which at the moment is far from generating the income one would hope for. The purpose of our Mission is after all to collect money to send to Italy to help the Waldensian Church. Our choice has been to help in areas where the Church does not receive help from other sources; that is in evangelisation, church life, the maintenance and building of places of worship, in one word: Christian life.

  • The Waldensian Review
THE WALDENSIAN REVIEW No. 116 Summer 2010 Editor: Mrs Erica Scroppo Newbury, 85 St Andrew’s Road, Cambridge CB4 1DH. Telephone 01223-315753, email [email protected] From the Editor Dear Friends and Supporters, Thank you to those of you who found the time to send me your views and suggestions for the Waldensian Review and its future. Thank you also to those who spoke to me about it. Well done to those who spotted the ‘esoteric’ remark that slipped through the proof correcting. All the others, according to the old Italian saying ‘Chi tace acconsente’, ‘Who doesn’t speak agrees’, I assume like the magazine as it is and don’t think there is need to change it or improve it. If necessary many would be happy with just one issue a year provided that size and content did not change too much. What in the end was decided at the Committee Meeting in March is that we shall have one printed 16-page magazine per year (in late Spring or early Summer) and a 2–4-page newsletter before Christmas. This should keep everyone happy and up to date about what is going on in Italy and in the Waldensian Church. It should also save us some money. Indeed the financial situation is a bit worrying and not just for the Wal- densian Church Mission. All the Churches are feeling the pinch and we have just found that there are no grants available to help us with the support of ‘our’ student Luca Ghiretti who is to spend one year studying for an MA in Pastoral Theology at Wesley House in Cambridge.

  • Identity in Dialogue: Story of the Italian Baptists
Identity in Dialogue: Story of the Italian Baptists A paper presented by Anna Maffei at the Baptist World Alliance Heritage and Identity Commission in Seville on July 13, 2002 My small people “We have always to look with wonderful astonishment at the work that God is pleased to do through the nothingness of what we have and of what we are.” These words by Tullio Vinay, a Waldensian pastor who died a few years ago, may be a good start for this presentation of some aspects of Italian Baptist history and identity. I am in fact aware of the little we represent in the whole theatre of human history and of the fact that this awareness should build in us a sense of deep humility. But on the other side I contend that there is a history that is not written on paper as it does not have names of importance but nevertheless it belongs to the great memory of God. It is God who remembers all the names, the faces, the stories of thousands and thousands of simple people who worked in his vineyard for one hour or for their entire life. It is in God’s memory that, we trust, nobody is lost. With this deep conviction of faith I come to you today to speak of my little people, the Italian Baptist, the people I met when I was a young university student in love with historical linguistics, already engaged in a part time job, teaching ballet. This people is so small and so scattered on Italian soil that you may live your entire life without encountering one of its members.

Call for participation Laboratorio Umano di Rigenerazione Territoriale Riesi (CL) August 22-30, 2020 Deadline: July 15 2020. Riesi is a town in Mid-Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta. In the Sixties the architect Leonardo Ricci realized, on behalf of his friend and Waldensian pastor Tullio Vinay, the Villaggio Monte degli Ulivi, a place dedicated to the education of children. The Waldensian church - is in Sicily since the XIX Century - stands as an educational, cultural and social support for the weaker social classes in a fragile and isolated territory. Laboratorio Umano di Rigenerazione Territoriale, made by Servizio Cristiano and the not for proft plug_in, is a summer school with human centered approach and part of this context. The aim is to draw attention to the suburbs of our country and regenerate the local community through participation defined as new opportunities for young people. The summer school is curated by Emanuele Piccardo, architecture critic and president of the not for profit plug_in, with the architects Orizzontale+Flora La Sita, envisages the recovery of a building confiscated from the mafia: a three-storey house which results from speculation in the 1980s in Riesi. The management of the building has been entrusted to Servizio Cristiano, a welfare and social work centre of the Waldensian Protestant Church in Italy, which bases its action on the principles of active solidarity, the fight against illegality and mafia. The innovation of the future workshop consists in defining two operational phases, one is design and the other construction site to implement in real time the ideas that arise from the exchange of participants and tutors.
