In this operation nineteen Americans gave their lives in the defense of our nation. The battle was fought from 3–4 October 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, between forces of the United States (supported by UN forces) and Somali militiamen loyal to the war lord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. The initial U.S. Joint Special Operations force, Task Force Ranger, was a collaboration of various U.S. elite special forces units whose mission was to seize two of Aidid's high-echelon lieutenants. The goal of the operation was achieved, however conditions spiraled into the deadly Battle of Mogadishu. The initial operation of 3 October 1993, intended to last an hour, became an overnight standoff and rescue operation extending into daylight hours of 4 October. Colonel Danny R. McKnight, U.S. Army, Retired, played an integral part in The Battle of Mogadishu and his actions, along with so many heroes from our military is depicted in the movie Black Hawk Down. Colonel McKnight’s military career included combat duty on two occasions, Panama 1989 and Somalia 1993. Colonel McKnight‘s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2 awards), the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman‘s Badge, the Ranger Tab, the Master Parachutist Badge with Combat Star, and the Pathfinder Badge. In addition, he also served in command positions with 3rd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, 4th Battalion 27th Infantry, First U.S. Army After completing 28 and one-half years of service to our country in the Army, Colonel McKnight then served in two Homeland Security related positions, Homeland Security Coordinator for the Brevard County Emergency Management Office, and Homeland Security Training Coordinator in the Criminal Justice Center. He and his wife, Linda, reside in Rockledge, Florida. All proceeds from this event will support Operation Patriot Support, the Florida Chapter of Operation Second Chance, Black Dagger Military Hunt Club, and Support the Troops. All of these organizations provide assistance to wounded veterans and their families, especially here in West Central Florida. He knew their faces so well they were like brothers. The older guys on this crew, like Eversmann, a staff sergeant with five years in at age twenty-six, had lived and trained together for years. They‘d been drunk together, gotten into fights, slept on forest floors, jumped out of airplanes, climbed mountains, shot down foaming rivers with their hearts in their throats, baked and frozen and starved together, passed countless bored hours, teased one another endlessly about girlfriends or lack of same, driven out in the middle of the night from Fort Benning to retrieve each other from some diner or strip club out on Victory Drive after getting drunk and falling asleep or pissing off some barkeep.

    CHAPTER 1: HAIL MARY, THEN DOOM STAFF SGT. Matt Eversmann's lanky frame was fully extended on the rope for what seemed too long on the way down. Hanging from a hovering Blackhawk helicopter, Eversmann was a full 70 feet above the streets of Mogadishu . His goggles had broken, so his eyes chafed in the thick cloud of dust stirred up by the bird's rotors. It was such a long descent that the thick nylon rope burned right through the palms of his leather gloves. The rest of his Chalk, his squad, had already roped in. Nearing the street, through the swirling dust below his feet, Eversmann saw one of his men stretched out on his back at the bottom of the rope. He felt a stab of despair. Somebody's been shot already! He gripped the rope hard to keep from landing on top of the guy. It was Pvt. Todd Blackburn, at 18 the youngest Ranger in his Chalk, a kid just months out of a Florida high school. He was unconscious and bleeding from the nose and ears. The raid was barely under way, and already something had gone wrong. It was just the first in a series of worsening mishaps that would endanger this daring mission. For Eversmann, a five-year veteran from Natural Bridge, Va. , leading men into combat for the first time, it was the beginning of the longest day of his life. Just 13 minutes before, three miles away at the Ranger's base on the Mogadishu beach, Eversmann had said a Hail Mary at liftoff.
