Logos: A Journal of Eastern Christian Studies Vol. 50 (2009) Nos. 1–2, pp. 13–54 A Prisoner for His People’s Faith: Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky’s Detentions under Russia and Poland Athanasius D. McVay Abstract (Українське резюме на ст. 53) Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky (1865–1944) was impri- soned no fewer than three times because of his defence of the faith of his Ukrainian people. Based on correspondence found in the Vatican Archives, this article reveals hitherto unknown details of the metropolitan’s imprisonments. It also sheds light on the reasons why Sheptytsky was imprisoned so many times and chronicles the vigorous interventions of the Roman Apos- tolic See to defend the metropolitan and to secure his release and return to his archeparchy of Lviv. His personal back- ground, spiritual journey, and persecution, closely parallel aspects of the history of the Ukrainian nation. He underwent his own process of national awakening, which resulted in his return to the Byzantine-Ruthenian rite of his ancestors. Be- coming Byzantine yet remaining Catholic placed him directly at odds with the political-religious ideologies of both the Russian Empire and the newborn Polish Republic, especially since he had assumed the mantle of spiritual leadership over the Galician Ukrainians. Sheptytsky was deported to Siberia in 1914 as an obstacle to the tsarist plan to absorb the Ukrai- nian Greco-Catholics into the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1919, he was placed under house arrest, this time by Catholic Poland, and interned three years later by the same government when he attempted to return to Lviv. ®®®®®®®® 14 Athanasius D.

SONS OF DON BOSCO SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES SALESIAN BISHOPS 1884 to 2001 by Charles N. Bransom, Jr. INTRODUCTION he study of apostolic succession and episcopal lineages has long fascinated students of church history. It was not until the middle T of the twentieth century, however, that a systematic attempt was made to trace and catalogue the consecrations of bishops on a world-wide basis. A small group of researchers has catalogued the consecrations of tens of thou sands of bishops dating back many centuries. The fruits of their labors--labors that are on going-have resulted in a database, which can trace the episcopal lineage of any living bishop and the vast majority of deceased bishops. In 1984, I began a project on the episcopal ordinations of bishops of re ligious orders and congregations. One fruit of that work was a study of the ordi nations of Salesian bishops, Les Eveques Salesiens. The present work updates, corrects and expands the 1984 study. In 1984, the episcopal ordinations of 130 bishops were presented. This study contains the details of 196 bishops. The text has been expanded to include the episcopal lineages of the bishops. Of the 196 bishops in this study, 183 trace their orders to Scipione Re biba, who was appointed Auxiliary Bishop ofChieti in 1541. The Rebiban suc cession is the major episcopal line in the contemporary Catholic episcopate. More than 91 % of the more than 4,500 bishops alive today trace their orders 54 Journal of Salesian Studies back to Rebiba Why so many bishops should trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained, in great part, by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who consecrated 139 bishops during his pontificate, many of them cardinals, nuncios and bishops of important sees who in tum conse crated many other bishops.

Almatourism Special Issue N. 8, 2018: Rossi T.M., The Historical Diocesan Archive of Lucca, Unesco Heritage (Italy) Almatourism Journal of Tourism, Culture and Territorial Development ___________________________________________________________ The Historical Diocesan Archive of Lucca, Unesco Heritage (Italy) Rossi, T.M. * Historical Diocesan Archive of Lucca (Italy) ABSTRACT The ecclesiastical archives contain the millennial memory of our past. Unlike the Italian State Archives and the European National Archives, they are the only institutions that can boast a history coming back much long before the year 1000 a.D. The activity of researcher therefore must be made easier as much as possible. A heritage of enormous importance is located in Lucca. The Historical Diocesan Archive of Lucca is one of the most important ecclesiastical archives in the world, with almost 1,500 linear meters of documentation and over 13,500 parchments. Its archival items cover around 15th centuries of history and the wealth of them is known worldwide to scholars and archival institutions. In 2011, the Early Middle Ages documents present in Lucca’s Archive were included in the Memory of the World Register by UNESCO. This recognition places the Archive in front of two important challenges for the future: the correct preservation of such a precious asset and the correct management of the assets and spaces in which the scrolls are stored. The present paper presents the documentary and library collections of the Archive, briefly focusing on some peculiarities, and analyzing more concretely those aspects that affect the life of the archive itself, for instance its physical location, its historical importance and the role that it plays as a memory of society.
