07/05/2002 Sokongan keluarga jana sukan pemotoran negara Zairee Zahir KEJAYAAN Malaysia yang mula melahirkan beberapa pemandu muda dalam sukan bermotor di peringkat antarabangsa bukan satu kebetulan biarpun Litar F1 Sepang yang menjadi daya ilham Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, memulakan pembinaannya pada 1997. Sebaliknya, ia sudah dirancang lebih awal oleh ibu bapa masing-masing selepas melihat bakat anak mereka dan menyedari impak besar yang mampu diberikan sukan bertaraf dunia itu. Kerana minat mendalam dan impian melihat anak tempatan bersaing di pentas tertinggi, ada ibu bapa mengambil inisiatif awal untuk membimbing dan menyokong pembabitan anak-anak dengan harapan mereka mampu berdiri sama tinggi dengan pemandu Formula Satu handalan dunia. Masa, tenaga dan wang ringgit yang bukan sedikit dicurahkan untuk melihat anak mereka berjaya biarpun terpaksa bergolok gadai untuk mencari sumber kewangan sendiri bagi menampung perbelanjaan tinggi dalam sukan itu. Usaha keras kerajaan menerusi Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) juga membuka pintu kepada ramai pemandu muda negara mengembangkan bakat dalam pelbagai kejuaraan peringkat dunia. Nama Alex Yoong yang kini menjadi pemandu pasukan F1, KL Minardi Asiatech sebenarnya sudah disebut-sebut sejak 1991 ketika Malaysia belum bermimpi untuk menjadi kuasa sukan bermotor Asia. Bapanya, Hanifah Yoong Abdullah adalah individu yang sentiasa bertungkus lumus memastikan anaknya itu bersaing di peringkat tertinggi. Selepas mengukir nama dalam beberapa perlumbaan tempatan, Alex beralih ke Kejuaraan British yang menjadi sekolah ramai pemandu F1 ketika ini. Semasa berlumba di F3 British bersama pasukan Alan Docking, Alex juga bersaing dalam Kejuaraan F3000 Itali dan F3 Eropah, sebelum beralih ke Formula Nippon di Jepun selama dua musim sebelum mengukir sejarah menjadi pemandu pertama Malaysia dan bukan Jepun di Asia, menjadi pemandu F1. -

The development of promising talented drivers enjoys a long tradition at BMW Motorsport. In 2014 a new multi-level GT junior concept had been introduced: the BMW Motorsport Junior Programme. This realignment saw BMW Motorsport shift its development of young drivers back to the GT and touring car sector. In Formula racing the concept bore fruit for many years in Formula BMW and the Formula BMW Talent Cup and kick-started the racing career of many successful drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg. The focus is on GT and touring car drivers who already have some racing experience. Outings in the BMW M235i Racing are an integral part of the comprehensive training programme. As well as race starts and test drives, intensive theory courses dealing with fitness and PR are planned, as are mental and simulator training. The potential candidates for this year’s class were put to the test in a shootout in the BMW M235i Racing in Dijon on 10th/11th March. Ricky Collard and Nico Menzel proved to be the most promising talents. They are the 2016 BMW Motorsport Juniors. A decision as to which of the young drivers showed the most potential is made by a jury of experts, headed by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. BMW works driver Dirk Adorf will act as a mentor for the junior programme. At the end of the year, the most successful BMW Motorsport Junior of the season will be given the opportunity to continue his training for a second year in a higher racing category. -

Now the GT3 sports car will be battling for victory in the season’s most important sprint race in the streets of Macau. At the same time, this marks the Asian premiere of the Audi R8 LMS from November 19 to 22. The International Automobile Federation has awarded ‘FIA GT World Cup’ status to this city street race for the first time. Starting in 2016, Audi will be fielding the new race car in the Asia-wide Audi R8 LMS Cup. Three times in the past four years, Audi won the Macau GT Cup – each time with Edoardo Mortara at the wheel. The Audi driver from the DTM is returning to the city street circuit again this year. He will be supported by Audi Sport Team Phoenix that achieved its first triumph in a race in Macau in 1999, with an Audi A4 quattro super touring car. Among the fiercest rivals in the field of the 22 race cars from seven manufacturers is one of Mortara’s brand colleagues: Audi WEC driver René Rast. -

With premium quality in products and support Audi Sport’s customer racing department occupies an outstanding position in a tough competitive environment – in as many as four racing categories. In addition, Audi Sport customer racing in 2019 supports commitments in the Intercontinental GT Challenge, the FIA GT World Cup, in the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup and at stand-alone events such as the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The four rings have been firmly established also in customer sport since 2009. Following Audi’s successes in rally racing, in touring car racing and in the sports prototype category, the brand started offering products specifically designed for customers a decade ago. Everything began in GT3 racing with the Audi R8 LMS that was followed in 2015 by the second generation and is now starting to the 2019 season as an evolution. In 2011, the Audi TT RS that was particularly successful in endurance racing was the second model in the program. In 2015, the Audi TT cup car for one- make racing complemented the portfolio. For the 2017 season, a TCR race touring car – the Audi RS 3 LMS – was available for the first time.
