Named ‘Percussionist of the Year’ by Modern Drummer Reader’s poll in 2009 and 2010, Conte proved himself versatile musically, and by 1973, he was playing regularly in local clubs. He quickly became a busy studio musician, and throughout the 1970s, he played in the Latin fusion band Caldera. In the 1980s, Conte toured with several different musicians, including Madonna, guitarist Al Di Meola, and Andy Narell. Conte also played percussion on the Pat Metheny Group release 'We Live Here', in 1995, as well as I Mother Earth's first two albums Dig (1994) and Scenery and Fish (1996). Recently, Conte has toured as part of James Taylor's "Band of Legends." Luis Conte was part of Phil Collins 1997 "Dance into the Light" tour and 2004 "First Farewell Tour", performing in both of them Afro-Cuban percussion and adding more depth into the concert songs. Luis has truly played with the “who’s who” of the music business, including Phil Collins, Madonna, Ray Charles, Beck, Shakira, Cline Dion, and numerous others.     International Journal of Communication 11(2017), 2250–2269 1932–8036/20170005 K-Pop in Latin America: Transcultural Fandom and Digital Mediation BENJAMIN HAN Concordia University Wisconsin, USA This article examines the transnational popularity of K-pop in Latin America. It argues K- pop as a subculture that transforms into transcultural fandom via digital mediation, further resulting in its accommodation into Latin American mass culture. The article further engages in a critical analysis of K-pop fan activism in Latin America to explore the transcultural dynamics of K-pop fandom. In doing so, the article provides a more holistic approach to the study of the Korean Wave in Latin America within the different “scapes” of globalization. Keywords: K-pop, fandom, Latin America, digital culture, Korean Wave The popularity of K-pop around the globe has garnered mass media publicity as Psy’s “Gangnam Style” reached number two on the Billboard Charts and became the most watched video on YouTube in 2012. Although newspapers, trade journals, and scholars have examined the growing transnational popularity of K-pop in East Asia, the reception and consumption of K-pop in Latin America have begun to receive serious scholarly consideration only in the last few years. Numerous reasons have been explicated for the international appeal and success of K-pop, but it also is important to understand that the transnational and transcultural fandom of K-pop cannot be confined solely to its metavisual aesthetics that creatively syncretize various genres of global popular music such as Black soul and J-pop. K-pop as hybrid music accentuated with powerful choreography is a form of visual spectacle but also promotes a particular kind of lifestyle represented by everyday modernity in which social mobility in the form of stardom becomes an important facet of the modernization process in Latin America.

    LAS MUJERES DEL OTRO LADO: A CRITIQUE OF THE REPRESENTATIONS OF MEXICAN WOMEN AT THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDER By Adriana Martinez-Fernandez A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Hispanic Cultural Studies 2011 ABSTRACT LAS MUJERES DEL OTRO LADO: A CRITIQUE OF THE REPRESENTATIONS OF MEXICAN WOMEN AT THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDER By Adriana Martinez-Fernandez This dissertation analyzes cultural representations of Mexican border women and their interactions with their political and social environment. Short stories, novels, documentaries, plays, testimonial literature and films on the Mexican women at the U.S.-Mexico border are crucial to the understanding of gendered constructions at la frontera, as they formulate a metacommentary to a variety of complex issues ‘on the ground.’ That is to say, the portrayals of border women unquestionably attest to often-clashing perspectives on culture, nation, sexuality and class. This dissertation focuses on the following texts: Chapter 1 centers on Ciudad Juárez, examining Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s novel Desert Blood: The Juárez Murders (2005) and the documentary film La Batalla de las Cruces (2005), directed by Rafael Bonilla. These texts have been chosen because their portrayals of juarense women address the discourse of victimization from different perspectives within the context of the hundreds of murders of women that have afflicted this city with impunity since 1993. These texts reflect the paradoxes that emerge either from underlining the helpless condition of the victims or from creating a public persona for the activists campaigning against the murders.
