  • Curated by Yuko Shiraishi
Utopia Dystopia Revisited curated by Yuko Shiraishi 19 September - 2 November 2019 Annely Juda Fine Art 23 Dering Street, 3rd floor London W1S 1AW T: +44 20 7629 7578 F: +44 20 7491 2139 E: [email protected] Utopia/Dystopia Revisited by Yuko Shiraishi In John Carey’s The Faber Book of Utopias published in 2000, he explains that Utopia means ‘nowhere’ or ‘no-place’. Utopia has tended to be taken to mean a good place, but strictly speaking imaginary good places and imaginary bad places are all Utopias or ‘nowheres’. I have always been interested in the subject of Utopia and Dystopia, but the key inspiration for this exhibition has been the work of Ivan Leonidov, which I discovered through reading Akiko Honda’s Astroarchitecture: Ivan Leonidov and Unrealized Architectural Projects in the USSR between 1920s-1950s (2014). Leonidov has been unkindly treated by history. Apart from a small number of sketches and paintings, little of his work survives. Nor does anything remain by way of notes or commen- taries he may have written. He is therefore presented here as a forgotten presence, an archi- tect who never existed, an intriguing ghost from the past. By inviting him into this exhibition, my hope has been to re-open a window onto the meaning of Utopia / Dystopia such as Leonidov experienced in Russia and the Soviet Union. During the 1920s, Leonidov argued, as a member of the Constructivist movement, that archi- tecture had to adopt alternative perspectives through which to view the world. He explored new forms of media such as film and photography in the development of a methodology that Honda has called Astroarchitecture.

  • Tsuneo Goda Wins the Inkpot Award at Comic-Con International 2011
August 4, 2011 Press Release Tsuneo Goda wins the Inkpot Award at Comic-Con International 2011 dwarf inc. TYO Inc. The Representative Director and main creator of dwarf inc. (Headquarters: Nerima-ku, Tokyo; TYO Group; http://www.dwarf.co.jp/), Tsuneo Goda picked up the Inkpot Award at Comic-Con International 2011 (official website: http://www.comic-con.org/; hereinafter referred to as "Comicon") held in San Diego, US, in late July. The Inkpot Award was established in 1974 by Comicon. Selecting from official Comicon guests who have made a large contribution to the world of pop culture such as manga, animation and science fiction, it is awarded to people who have left behind a particularly remarkable body of work. Japanese recipients of this award include Osamu Tezuka (1980); Rumiko Takahashi (1994); Naoko Takeuchi (1998); Hayao Miyazaki (2009); and Moto Hagio (2010). As well as Mr. Goda, Steven Spielberg also won an Inkpot Award this year. It could be said that Mr. Goda's award is an acknowledgment of his excellent past work on Domo-kun overseas as well as the originality of his character modeling and video works. Domo-kun started to gain success overseas after winning an award at an overseas festival in 2005, and its TV program has been broadcast in over 170 countries and regions to date including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and South Korea. It was selected as a Halloween mascot for the US major supermarket, "Target", in 2008, and was used as a limited period campaign character for the American Seven-Eleven in the following year.
