Dentro de este género, las diversas adaptaciones y reelabo- raciones de mitos y cuentos tradicionales suponen recursos fértiles con los que cubrir las demandas de una industria extremadamente prolífica. Sin embargo, pese a su po- pularidad como objeto de estudio, las exploraciones textuales sobre anime fantástico rara vez se aventuran más allá de las coordenadas temáticas o históricas de sus argu- mentos. It is hard to ignore the menace in the name, the morbid delight one gets in pronouncing a name that is riddled with such meaning. At some level, human society is fascinated with the notion of a vampire: a revenant that ret urns from beyond the grave to extract the blood of the living in order to extend its unholy life. It plays on our basic fears as humans, the fear of the dead, the fear of dying, the fear of the unknown, and a fascination with this substance consisting of p lasma, platelets, and cells that runs through our veins. Bram Stoker took all of these fears to new heights when he wrote Dracula , one of the most enduring horror stories to ever be composed. The novel has generated enormous criticism that has chiefly been divided into the camps of Irishness, colonialism/imperialism, and sexuality. Whether it was intentional or not, Stoker’s novel is a breeding ground for almost every sexual fetish, deviance, and perversion that is known to mankind. Characters in the novel engage in mutilation, blood-drinking, perverted fellation, sexual acts in front of their spouse, female domination, male domination, group rape, homosexuality, male penetration, and sadomasochism. -

If you haven't seen this horror classic with George C. Scott, you should. This film was released in 1979 and has the same elements about the ghost of a young child murdered and thrown into a well. Very similar, only I like The Changeling more because it didn't contain cheap CGI effects like with the black-haired girl and flies buzzing out of a TV screen. The author of Ringu obviously liked The Changeling too.” „The author of Ringu, Koji Suzuki, based his story on a Japanese folk tale. If you would've actually read the book, then you would know, that it's very different from the films. Also, if The Ring sup- posedly ripped off The Changeling, then so did Stir of Echoes, What Lies Beneath, and many other similar films, so quit being so daft.” The above comments come from the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com) message board, and they concern Gore Verbinski’s 2002 film The Ring. Although remakes as such are not the main subject of this paper, the comments quoted above point to a larger, more important matter. The remakes are, however, a good starting point. Remaking a film means, to some extent, translating or remaking the idea or concept into our own cultural background. To work and perform as a successful production, a remake has to describe culturally strange premises by means of cultur- ally familiar elements. Books cannot be remade in the same way that popular films can. -

Andrei Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2016 © 2016 Talia J.Andrei All rights reserved Abstract Mapping Sacred Spaces: Representations of Pleasure and Worship in Sankei Mandara Talia J. Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -

Revampings of Dracula in Contemporary Fiction Margaret L Carter [Margaret L Carter, author of The Vampire in Literature: A Critical Bibliography and editor of Dracula: The Vampire and the Critics, has recently published Different Blood: The Vampire as Alien (www.xlibris.com/DifferentBlood.html).] Although Count Dracula is slain in the final pages of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, throughout the subsequent century he has enjoyed innumerable resurrections in film and literature. Many of these incarnations might be unrecognizable to Stoker as the character he created. Fictional treatments of Dracula, especially those that have appeared within the past thirty years, reflect changes in attitudes toward vampires in general. In contrast to the characterization of vampires in Stoker’s own fiction and that of his contemporaries, in recent decades various authors have rendered these “monsters” sympathetically. Earlier nineteenth-century works do contain a few hints of sympathy for their vampire characters. They inspire sympathy or attraction, however, despite their inhuman nature rather than because of it. They still must be destroyed. The eponymous monster in Varney the Vampyre (1847) displays remorse for his bloodthirsty past and finally commits suicide by leaping into a volcano. Carmilla, in J Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella (1872), presents herself initially as victim rather than predator, and the narrator, Laura, finds her attractive, yet Carmilla’s existence nevertheless ends in violent destruction. Nina Auerbach characterizes pre-Stoker vampires as “not demon lovers or snarling aliens ... but singular friends” in a literary period when “it was a privilege to walk with a vampire” (13). This “sinister, superior sharer” enjoys an “intimate intercourse with mortals,” even though a “dangerously close” one (13). -

Primary Source Document with Questions (DBQs) EXCERPTS FROM SELECTED WRITINGS BY SAICHŌ: “PRAYER ON MOUNT HIEI” “ON THE POSSIBILITY OF ENLIGHTENMENT FOR ALL MEN” “VOW OF THE UNINTERRUPTED STUDY OF THE LOTUS SŪTRA” “THE MAHAYANA PRECEPTS IN ADMONITIONS OF THE FANWANG SŪTRA” Introduction Saichō (767‐822), posthumously titled Dengyō Daishi, was the founder of the Tendai School in Japan, which became the most prominent branch of Buddhism throughout the Heian period. Saichō learned of the Chinese Tiantai teachings during his trip to China in 804. After returning to Japan, he founded the Enryakuji temple on Mt. Hiei near Kyoto. At that point, the main Buddhist rituals were shifted from being performed at Todaiji in Nara, which followed the Vinaya (Hīnayāna) precepts, to Enryakuji, which adhered strictly to the Bodhisattva (Mahāyāna) precepts.
