The terminus post quem and lynchpin of their evidence was the following passage from the beginning of Book II chapter 9 in John of Fordun’s Chronica Gentis Scotorum, which they dated variously from the 1360s to the 1390s:1 The character of the Scots however varies according to the difference in language. For they have two languages, namely the Scottish language (lingua Scotica) and the Teutonic language (lingua Theutonica). -

The project focuses on the effects in Scotland of the development of the new media of film and wireless. It addresses question as to what changes, over the first decades of the twentieth century, these two revolutionary forms of public technology effect on the established entertainment system in Scotland and on the Scottish experience of culture. The study presents a broad view of the cultural scene in Scotland over the period: discusses contemporary politics; considers established and new theatrical activity; examines the development of a film culture; and investigates the expansion of broadcast wireless and its influence on indigenous theatre. -

Identity in Gaelic Drama 1900-1949 Susan Ross University of Glasgow Michelle Macleod and Moray Watson have described drama and prose fiction as being ‘in the shadow of the bard’ in terms of their place in the canon of Gaelic literature. (2007) Analysis and review of the extant drama materials show, however, that the Gaelic playwright Tormod Calum Dòmhnallach (Norman Malcolm MacDonald), 1 was right in saying in 1986 that ‘Gaelic theatre […] has been in existence for longer than many of us suspect’. (MacDonald 1986: 147) It is believed that the first Gaelic play (fully in Gaelic, rather than bilingual English with Gaelic) was performed by the Edinburgh University Celtic Society in 1902 although it is no longer known which play or sketch was performed. (Macleod and Watson 2007: 280) In the first decade of the twentieth century, Còisir Chiùil Lunnainn (London Musical Choir) also performed plays at their annual concert in London.2 This article looks at the first half of the twentieth century, when stage drama in Gaelic was being created, to investigate how Gaelic playwrights represented Scottish Gaels and their culture in this new art form. In terms of their artistic merit, Gaelic plays between 1900 and the Second World War are not generally held in high esteem, having previously been described as ‘outstanding neither as to quantity or quality’. (MacLeod 1969: 146) Despite this, there is value in what they reveal about identity and attitudes of the writers, many of whom were prominent figures in the Gaelic movement. An overview of some of the principal themes and tropes of the drama of this period will be presented, considering in particular how the writers negotiate what it meant to be a Gael in the early twentieth century. -

They knew in you the humanity that the sea did not tear, that a thousand years did not spoil: the quality of the Gael permanent.]1 The words of Sorley MacLean have become something of a Q-Celtic clarion call in recent years. They commemorate his brother Calum, whose work on each side of the North Channel on behalf of the Irish Folklore Commission and of the School of Scottish Studies, recording the oral tradition of those whom Calum, quoting the Irish poet F. R. Higgins, described as ‘the lowly, the humble, the passionate and knowledgeable stock of the Gael’,2 is as potent a symbol as there could be of the continuing reality of a greater Gaeldom, however attenuated, into our own times. -

I have fond memories of days spent with multiple, and rare, editions by my side, familiarising myself with the reception of James Macpherson in North America,1 and of hospitable evenings and weekends conducting research within the welcoming Scottish community. Ross and Lucie made particularly sure, as they have with all the Fellows, that I was never bored, hungry or thirsty: their legendary hospitality involved fine meals, whisky and good fellowship, enhanced by the delightful company of Wallace the dog. -

international journal of scottish literature www.ijsl.stir.ac.uk ISSN 1751-2808 ISSUE SIX, SPRING/SUMMER 2010 Editorial: Burns and the World[1] Liam McIlvanney In the spring of 1786, Robert Burns was preparing to venture into in ‘guid, black prent’ as he readied his first book of poems for the press.[2] As a local farmer in his twenties, Burns was an unknown quantity, and so the work was to be published by subscription: prospective buyers would sign up in advance to pay their three shillings. A subscription bill for the volume carried the following declaration: As the author has not the most distant Mercenary view in Publishing, as soon as so many Subscribers appear as will defray the necessary Expence, the Work will be sent to the Press. As was often the case when discussing his own work, Burns was being a little disingenuous here. Certainly when the profits rolled in, the poet had a definite ‘Mercenary view’ in mind: he needed the money to emigrate. Nine guineas of his profits from Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect would go to pay his passage to Jamaica. When Burns booked his passage to the Indies in the summer of 1786, ‘his life was falling apart’.[3] The farm he leased with his brother Gilbert was failing. His girlfriend, Jean Armour, was pregnant. Though Burns mooted marriage, Jean’s horrified parents spurned him as a ‘worthless rake’ and packed Jean off to stay with relatives in Paisley. The kirk, whose ire he had roused through a string of biting anticlerical satires, saw its chance for revenge; the fornicator Burns would have to mount the cutty stool. -
