Looking back over the issues of the magazine, two of the central patterns were there from the word go. They’re plain as day in the title: the fluid yet directing edge poetry shares with the visual arts, and, somewhere so far in the other direction it’s almost the same thing, the porous edge poetry shares with sound or performance, so porous you can hear it in its hollows. Although the magazine grew out of serial offences in little magazineship, the first impulse was to be quite different formally from Gairfish, Verse, and Southfields, each of which had placed a premium on explanation, on prose engagement, and on the analysis of the cultural traditions from which the poems they published either appeared to emerge or through which, whatever their actual origins, they could be understood. Painted, spoken would be much more tight-lipped, a gallery without the instant contextualisation demanded by an educational agenda (perhaps rightly in a public situation, but a mixed model is surely better than a constant ‘tell-us-what-to-think’ approach and the public isn’t always best served by conventional teaching). Instead, poems in Painted, spoken would take their bearings from what individual readers brought to the texts ‘themselves’ - because readers are never really alone - and also from the association of texts with each other, in a particular issue and across issues. The magazine went on its laconic way for several years until a different perspective began to open up, a crystal started to solidify, whatever metaphor you’d care to use for time-lapse comprehension (oh there’s another one): in management-speak, significant change impressed on the strategy and the strategy needed to change. -

1. Canongate 1.1. Background Canongate's Close Proximity to The
Edinburgh Graveyards Project: Documentary Survey For Canongate Kirkyard --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Canongate 1.1. Background Canongate’s close proximity to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is situated at the eastern end of Canongate Burgh, has been influential on both the fortunes of the Burgh and the establishment of Canongate Kirk. In 1687, King James VII declared that the Abbey Church of Holyroodhouse was to be used as the chapel for the re-established Order of the Thistle and for the performance of Catholic rites when the Royal Court was in residence at Holyrood. The nave of this chapel had been used by the Burgh of Canongate as a place of Protestant worship since the Reformation in the mid sixteenth century, but with the removal of access to the Abbey Church to practise their faith, the parishioners of Canongate were forced to find an alternative venue in which to worship. Fortunately, some 40 years before this edict by James VII, funds had been bequeathed to the inhabitants of Canongate to erect a church in the Burgh - and these funds had never been spent. This money was therefore used to build Canongate Kirk and a Kirkyard was laid out within its grounds shortly after building work commenced in 1688. 1 Development It has been ruminated whether interments may have occurred on this site before the construction of the Kirk or the landscaping of the Kirkyard2 as all burial rights within the church had been removed from the parishioners of the Canongate in the 1670s, when the Abbey Church had became the chapel of the King.3 The earliest known plan of the Kirkyard dates to 1765 (Figure 1), and depicts a rectilinear area on the northern side of Canongate burgh with arboreal planting 1 John Gifford et al., Edinburgh, The Buildings of Scotland: Pevsner Architectural Guides (London : Penguin, 1991). -

The route Building Stones of Edinburgh’s South Side This tour takes the form of a circular walk from George Square northwards along George IV Bridge to the High Street of the Old Town, returning by South Bridge and Building Stones Chambers Street and Nicolson Street. ROSSLYN'S SCENIC LORE THE NORTH ESK RIVER OF ROMANCE "It is telling a tale that has been repeated a thousand times, to say, that a morning of leisure can scarcely be anywhere more delight- fully spent than hi the woods of Rosslyn, and on the banks of the Esk. Rosslyn and its adjacent scenery have associations, dear to the antiquary and historian, which may fairly entitle it to precedence over every other Scottish scene of the same kind." SIR WALTER SCOTT (" Provincial Antiquities of Scotland.") OF ROMANCE abound in Scotland, and RIVERSthe North Esk is one of them. From its source high up among the Pentland Heights near the Boarstane and the boundary line between Midlothian and Tweeddale, it is early gathered into a reservoir, whose engineer was Thomas Stevenson, father of Robert Louis Stevenson, constructed in 1850 to supply water and power used in the paper mills on the river's banks. Passing through Carlops, once a village of weavers, it flows on through the wooded gorge of Habbie's Howe and the woods surrounding Penicuik House, on to " Rosslyn's rocky glen," and Hawthornden, Melville Castle and Dalkeith Palace, entering the Firth of Forth at Musselburgh. Alas that the clear sparkling waters of the moorland stream should be so spoiled by the industries of the Wordsworth's valley." It is associated with some of the most famous men in Scottish literature who have lived on its banks, and has inspired the muse of some of Scotland's best poets. -
The National Borders of Scotland
The National Borders of Scotland Updated and extended October 2013 By Dr James Wilkie & Edward Means of Dr James Wilkie & Associates Scotland’s national borders comprise one terrestrial border with England and several sea borders, two with England and several with other countries (the Isle of Man, Ireland, Faeroes, Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands). The government of the United Kingdom has attempted to make unwarranted and illegal changes to both the terrestrial and the North Sea borders between Scotland and England. All these purported changes have been unfavourable to Scotland. The purposes of this paper are: To provide the Scottish people with complete information on Scotland’s true national borders, including information on historic and more modern illegal attempts to change them; To expose the UK Government's recent and current bad-faith manoeuvres to change the true national borders; To expose the Scottish Government’s dereliction of its duty to the people of Scotland by not taking constant and unceasing official action against those illegal UK Government actions; To expose the European Union’s undemocratic, bureaucratic, imperialistic and often recklessly incompetent intrusions into Scotland’s territorial waters. This paper is an update and extension of ‘The National Borders of Scotland’, originally published in November 2011, 2009. It also incorporates some material from ‘Scotland’s Hijacked Oil Revenue’, published in September 2010. This paper adds significant relevant material which has recently come to light, and examines some of the ramifications of the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty and alternatives to Scotland’s remaining in the European Union. 1 of 23 Terrestrial Border Scotland’s terrestrial border with England was fixed on 25 September 1237 by the Treaty of York, signed by Alexander II of Scotland and Henry III of England. -
GWL East End Women's Heritage Walk Map (PDF)
The women of Glasgow’s East End have always had to be industrious and resourceful simply to survive. This walk focuses on some of their achievements and struggles, and the radical nature of the area which gave birth to them. But fi rst let us acknowledge the unrecorded ranks whose destinies were unfairly determined by their gender. Women are invisible in early sources about Glasgow, but the laws passed after the Reformation of 1560 paint a grim picture of female subordination to a misogynist theocracy. Glasgow Cross (1) was a marketplace from medieval times, but also a site of punishment. Iron head-cages with spiked mouthpieces were excavated nearby; ‘scolds’ were amongst the punished women. A pulley was built over the Clyde to duck adulterers. Witches were likely held, interrogated and tried at the old Tolbooth here, and prostitutes were carted WOMEN’S across town, ducked, put in stocks and then banished to drums and chants. Walk down Saltmarket, then left to EAST END approach St Andrews in the Square (2).
