CHIN 4090-001 Classical Chinese Fiction Spring 2019 CHIN 4090: Readings in Masterworks of Classical Chinese Fiction TTR 10:30 - 11:45 pm, Main 117; Dr. Li Guo, ([email protected]); Office: Main 073, TTR 8:00-9:00 am Description: This upper-level content-based course is an introduction to traditional Chinese fiction, with a focus on masterworks from vernacular fictional traditions. The Chinese equivalent term for fiction or novel “small talks” (小說), as scholar Lin Yutang 林語堂 proposes, suggests the rise of traditional Chinese fiction from vernacular traditions including chats, conversations, folk storytelling, singsong tales and oral accounts on everyday happenings by and for ordinary civilians. Through close reading and discussions of vernacular fiction, we explore the seminal features of traditional society, including: religious and philosophical beliefs, the imperial system and dynastic change, gender relations, notions of class, ethnicity, virtue, kinship, family, and romance. Key questions: How do literati scholars, women authors, folk storytellers facilitate diverse imaginings of virtue, valor, and chivalry? How do we understand intertextuality between diverse genres? How does poetry blend into fictional narratives? How does fiction engender dramatic modes, which in return inspire new tales and textual representations? How do premodern literary masterworks inspire modern and contemporary media adaptations in film, anime, comic books, computer games, web sites, music, theater, art, and other media? Course goals: To guide students in reading excerpts from classical novels as well as from late imperial biographies, short stories, fantasy tales, folklores, travelogues, and chantefable stories. To provide students methods to analyze significant details or patterns, and develop an in-depth understanding of the text’s form, craft, meanings. To introduce students to historical backgrounds, contextual information, as well as modern and contemporary critical receptions of masterworks of classical Chinese literature To understand the canon of traditional Chinese literature, and reconsider literary canon as a "living tradition," both in contemporary societies, and in the global Chinese diaspora. Course goals as corresponding to IDEA goals: 6. Developing creative capacities (writing, inventing, designing, performing in art, music, drama, etc.) 7. Gaining a broader understanding and appreciation of intellectual/cultural activity (music, science, literature, etc.) 8. Developing skill in expressing myself orally or in writing Required Texts 1. Shi, Nai'an. Water Margin Stories. Tuttle. 9780804840958. 2. Luo, Guanzhong. The Three Kingdoms: The Sacred Oath. Tuttle. 9780804843935. 3. Pu, Songling. Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (Excerpts will be provided). No Language Prerequisites: All works are read in translation; no language background is necessary. Original Chinese texts in excerpts are provided for all selected readings for students who are interested in a comparative reading. Course Requirements: Attendance 5% Quizzes (I take 8 best out of 10) 8% Etiquette 2% Weekly Reading Posts (1% ea) 10% Active participation 8% Paired teaching demo 8% 1 Spring 2019 Oral Presentation 8% Essay 3, 15% Essay 1, 15% Final Exam 6% Essay 2, 15% Grading: Final grades are assigned based upon the following percentages of the total number of points: A = 94 - 100% A- = 90 - 93% B+ = 87 - 89% B = 83 - 86% B- = 80 - 82% C+ = 77 - 79% C = 73 - 76% C- = 70 - 72% D+ = 65 - 69% D = 60 - 64% D- = 55 - 59% F = 54% or less Attendance: Regular attendance of the class is important and highly related to a student’s performance in class. You are allowed 2 unexcused absences. Each additional absence is 1% of your total grade. In case of illness, emergency, or university activities, please notify me by email in advance, and submit an official university excused absence sheet when you return to class. Also, excessive absences will affect your in-class participation (8%) proportionately, and therefore should be consciously avoided. Plagiarism: Plagiarism includes knowingly "representing, by paraphrase or direct quotation, the published or unpublished work of another person as one's own in any academic exercise or activity without full and clear acknowledgment. It also includes the unacknowledged used of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials." The penalties for plagiarism are severe. They include warning or reprimand, grade adjustment, probation, suspension, expulsion, withholding of transcripts, denial or revocation of degrees, and referral to psychological counseling. Sexual Harassment: Sexual harassment is defined by the Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as any "unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature." Classroom etiquette: Materials developed for this class, including lesson plans, handouts, visual aids, tasks for translation are only designed and used by class members and shall not be openly circulated to anyone outside the class for protection of instructor’s copyrights for these materials. Please do not engage in any activities that may cause disruption or difficulty for instructional process, or create disrespectful impact or influence over classmates or the instructor, such as: Cell phone usage for surfing, texting, chatting during class. Surfing online irrelevant materials or engage in emails, online shopping, doing homework for other classes when in this class. Late arrival to class (except in unchangeable situations) and early leave from class. Sleeping, chatting on irrelevant contents or topics. Interrupting or creating obstruction for conversation and communication. Having loud or distracting paralleled conversations that obstruct other students from hearing those are answering questions or participating in course tasks.     Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 56. Last time, Song Jiang arrived at his exile destination, the scenic and prosperous prefecture of Jiangzhou (1,1). There, he became fast friends with the superintendent of the local jail, Dai Zong, and Dai Zong’s “oh my god I can’t take you anywhere” friend Li Kui. While they were drinking at a tavern by the river, Song Jiang made the mistake of saying he wanted some fresh fish soup. The next thing you know, Li Kui was body-slamming fishermen along the bank because they won’t give him any fish before their boss showed up. When their boss did show up, even he got pummeled by Li Kui. But he didn’t quit. Instead, he lured Li Kui onto a boat and promptly flipped the boat, sending his not-exactly-buoyant foe into the river. As Song Jiang and Dai Zong, along with a few hundred others, looked on from the bank of the river, they could see the water parting and Li Kui being lifted up and quickly pushed back down under again. The two men fought in the jade waves, one with skin so dark that it looked black, the other as pale as glistening frost. Pretty soon, Li Kui was being pulled up and dunked back down repeatedly. After a few dozen times of that, his eyes were turning pale. Seeing this, Song Jiang asked Dai Zong to beg somebody to intervene and save their friend. Dai Zong asked people in the crowd who the pale fisherman was.

    Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 61. Last time, Song Jiang and company caused not one but two ruckuses in the Jiangzhou area before setting off for Liangshan. On the way, they met up with four new heroes who, like everybody else, worshipped the ground that Song Jiang walked on, so they also decided to join the gang on Liangshan. Soon, all the chieftains old and new had arrived at the tavern run by Zhu Gui as a reconnaissance station for Liangshan. Now, when Chao Gai went off the mountain to go save Song Jiang, he left only six chieftains behind to mind the shop: Wu Yong the military strategist, Gongsun Sheng the Daoist priest, Lin Chong the Panther Head, Qin Ming the Fiery Thunderbolt, and the two craftsmen they had invited slash abducted to make the forged letter -- Xiao (1) Rang (4) and Jin (1) Dajian (4,1). These guys had gotten advance notice that the mission was successful and that the whole gang, plus a bunch of new friends, were on their way back. So that day, when they heard the group had arrived at the tavern, they sent lackeys down to Golden Sand Beach to welcome them with drums and flutes. The returning heroes went up to the stronghold on horseback and in sedan chairs. In the Hall of Honor, Wu Yong and company had laid out wine and a pot of incense to welcome them back. Chao Gai didn’t beat around the bush. He immediately asked Song Jiang to take the top command chair and serve as the new leader of Liangshan.

Last time, on his way home from the capital, Li Kui the Black Whirlwind stopped in at one old squire’s manor house and solved his family problems by killing his daughter and her secret lover when he caught them sneaking around. He then stopped in at the manor house of another old squire who was having problems with his daughter, except this guy’s problem was that apparently Song Jiang and another bandit from Liangshan had abducted his daughter. Li Kui blew his lid when he heard that, and the next thing you know, he was back on Liangshan, threatening to kill Song Jiang. After some war of words, Song Jiang said, “Don’t make a ruckus just yet. That old squire is alive, as are all his workhands. Let’s go see him and let him tell you if I was the one. If he says yes, then I’ll stick out my neck for your axe. But if he says I’m not the one, what punishment should you receive for all the trouble you’ve just caused?” “If you aren’t the one, then I’ll give you my head as well!” Li Kui said. “Fine! All the brothers here can be our witnesses,” Song Jiang replied. He then asked the chieftain Pei (2) Xuan (1) the Iron-faced Scribe, who was known for being a stickler for the rules, to write up two military pledges recording their agreement. Song Jiang and Li Kui each signed one of the pledges and gave them to each other for safekeeping.

    INTERLITTERARIA 2020, 25/2: 443–457 443 Why Was It the Ming Dynasty that Engendered the Guanxi Motif in Fiction? Why Was It the Ming Dynasty that Engendered the Guanxi Motif in Fiction? RUIHUI HAN Abstract: Compared to other informal social network mechanisms, guanxi is more common in China and is the most typical. Even in daily life, it is indispensable. Hence, in Chinese fiction, the guanxi motif is prevalent and important. Interestingly, before the Ming dynasty, guanxi was not a literary motif in fiction. This article suggests that three factors contributed to the rise of the guanxi motif in fiction in the Ming dynasty. The first was the boom in fiction writing, especially in the genre of realism, that occurred in this era, which expanded the scope of literary representation. The second was the degradation of public morals in the Ming dynasty, a momentous social transition that Ming fiction writers noted and portrayed. Guanxi, as a disruptive social mechanism that dismantled previous models of human connection, became a focus in their works. The third was the fact that the atmosphere of money worship promoted by guanxi, together with official corruption, facilitated widespread social inequality. Guanxi, as the crux of inequity, inspired writers to expose social turpitude. More importantly, the guanxi motif satisfied the need for plot conflict in literary works.
