This achievement is thanks to a record-number of competitive cyclists who call themselves USA Cycling members, generous donations from friends, strong support from industry sponsors and partners, and incredible performances from our elite athletes in major international events across the globe. For the sixth consecutive year, all measureable aspects of competitive cycling on the domestic front have grown, making bike racing one of the most popular sports in America. In 2008, we welcomed more than 63,000 licensees, representing a vast network of athletes, coaches, officials and race promoters. Also, with more than 2,500 sanctioned events across the nation, cycling continued to be one of the most accessible forms of competition for athletes of all ages and abilities. And our nearly 2,200 member clubs and teams provided the structure and social environment coveted by our many constituents. Collectively, these numbers illustrate the stability of bike racing in America and demonstrate our future potential. In the world-class arena, USA Cycling enjoyed unprecedented success, winning 5 Olympic and 14 Paralympic medals in Beijing last August. Those successes were further complemented by 11 world championship medals from our elite athletes, as well as an additional 49 medal-winning performances by USA Cycling members at UCI Masters and amateur world championship events. And while our top athletes recorded great results internationally, the athletes representing the future of American cycling performed often and admirably as part of USA Cycling’s athlete development infrastructure. With more than 2,300 individual race days in Europe and the rest of the world, our national team athletes received the exposure and guidance necessary to advance their competitive cycling careers. The accomplishments of our young athletes demonstrate that our development pipeline is working and the future of American cycling is in good hands. In revisiting our stated mission – to achieve sustained success in international cycling competition and to grow competitive cycling in America – it’s clear that 2008 was a hallmark year in carrying out those objectives. Thank you to the many people who have played an integral role in our success, and I invite you to continue your support. Sincerely, Steve Johnson CEO , USA Cycling 4 • USA Cycling USA CYCLING BOARD OF DIRECTORS Mark Abramson, President - NCCA Lisa Nye-Salladin - NORBA Wayne Stetina, Vice President - USCF Bill Peterson - USPRO Jim Patton, Secretary - USCF Anton Quist, Athlete Director - USCF John Bucksbaum - USACDF Nick Reistad, Athlete Director - USPRO Jeff Garvey - USACDF Donny Robinson, Athlete Director - BMXA Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, Athlete Director - NORBA Todd Seplavy - NORBA Clayton John - BMXA Rich Silverstein - USACDF UNITED States Cycling Federation (USCF) Board OF Trustees Dave Miller, Eastern Section Trustee & Chair Michael Blatchford, Athlete Trustee Jim Allen, Western Section Trustee & First Vice Chair Diane Fortini, Eastern Section Trustee Wayne Stetina, Western Section Trustee & Second Vice Andrew Hollinger, Central Section Trustee Chair James Karthauser, Central Section Trustee Tom Simonson, Western Section Trustee & Legislation Jim Patton, Eastern Section Chair Gordon Paulson, Central Section Trustee Anton Quist, Athlete Trustee & Secretary Kendra Wenzel, Athlete Trustee NATIONAL OFF-ROAD BICYCLE ASSOCIATION (NORBA) BOARD OF TRUSTEES Lisa Nye-Salladin, Organizer Trustee & President Kinnin Payson, Official Trustee Jamie Bogner, Land Access Trustee Todd Seplavy, Industry Trustee Don Edberg, Organizer Trustee Neven Steinmetz, Gravity Athlete Trustee Gary Fisher, Industry Trustee Chris Van Dine, At-Large Athlete Trustee Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski, Cross Country Athlete Trustee NATIONAL COLLEGIATE CYCLING ASSOCIATION (NCCA) BOARD OF TRUSTEES Mark Abramson Anne Spalding Emma Bast Sarah Uhl Nathan Drake UNITED STATES PROFESSIONAL RACING ORGANIZATION (USPRO) BOARD OF TRUSTEES Ken Mills, Trade Team Trustee & Chair Fred Mengoni, Lifetime Trustee Chris Aronhalt, Organizer Trustee & Vice Chair Bill Peterson, At-Large Trustee Ed Beamon, At-Large Trustee Nick Reistad, Athlete Trustee John Eustice, Organizer Trustee Tom Schuler, Trade Team Trustee Will Frischkorn, Athlete Trustee & Secretary BICYCLE MOTOCROSS ASSOCIATION (BMXA) BOARD OF TRUSTEES Donny Robinson, Athlete Trustee & President Clayton John, At-Large Trustee Bernard Anderson, At-Large Trustee & Secretary USA Cycling • 5 MISSION STATEMENT he mission of USA Cycling is to achieve sustained success in international T cycling competition and to grow competitive cycling in America. • Pressing Issues of Inequality That Modern-Day Female Athletes Face in Male Dominated Sports
A documentary written and directed by Pro Cyclist, Author & ESPN Columnist Kathryn Bertine 106 / Color / 2013 / Exhibition Format FIRST RUN FEATURES The Film Center Building 630 Ninth Ave. #1213 New York, NY 10036 (212) 243-0600 / Fax (212) 989-7649 Website: www.firstrunfeatures.com Email: [email protected] “Women hold up half the sky”- Chinese Proverb Synopsis: Modern society has long believed that women hold up half the sky in terms of equality and progression. So when it comes to the sport of professional cycling, why aren't women receiving half the road? Directed by pro cyclist Kathryn Bertine, HALF THE ROAD: The Passion, Pitfalls & Power of Women's Professional Cycling explores the world of women's professional cycling, focusing on both the love of sport and the pressing issues of inequality that modern-day female athletes face in male dominated sports. With footage from some of the world's best races to interviews with Olympians, World Champions, rookies, coaches, officials, doctors and family members, HALF THE ROAD offers a unique insight to the drive, dedication, and passion it takes for a female cyclist to thrive. Included as well are notable women who have achieved inroads in other endurance sports, such as Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to official register (as "K.V. Switzer") and run the all-male Boston Marathon in 1967; the iconic photo of her being attacked by a race official was listed by Time-Life as among its "100 Photographs that Changed the World." Director’s Bio: Kathryn Bertine is a professional cyclist, writer and filmmaker.

  • Tour De France
Tour de France The Tour de France is the world’s most famous, and arguably the hardest, cycling race. It takes place every year and lasts for a total of three weeks, covering almost 3,500km. History of the Race During the late 19th century, cycling became a popular hobby for many people. As time went on, organised bike races were introduced and professional cycling became very popular in France. On 6th July 1903, 60 cyclists set off on a race and covered 2,428km in a circular route over six stages. 18 days after setting off, 21 of the original 60 cyclists made it back to the finish line in Paris. The winner was Maurice Garin and the Tour de France was born. Except for war time, the race has taken place every year since then and has become more challenging with the addition of mountain climbs and longer distances. The Modern Tour de France Each year, the tour begins in a different country. The route changes annually too, though usually finishes on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. In 2019, the race starts in Brussels, Belgium on the 6th July and ends in Paris on the 28th July after 21 stages totalling a distance of 3,460km. There are 22 teams taking part in the Tour de France, each with eight riders. The reigning champion is Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas.

  • Pearl Izumi 24 Hours Cycling (Le Mans) Julien Guay Winner in the Sprint and the Third Victory of the S1neo Team Connect
Press release – for immediate release Le Mans, 30th August 2017 Pearl Izumi 24 Hours Cycling (Le Mans) Julien Guay winner in the sprint and the third victory of the S1neo Team Connect A new attendance record has been established for the 9th edition of the Pearl Izumi 24 Hours Cycling of Le Mans. The 26th and 27st August, 2155 riders accepted the challenge to ride for 24 hours. The track cyclist François Pervis gave the “Le Mans Type” start to 495 teams from around twenty different nations, after having climbed the straight line of the track, dressed in his world champion jersey (our photo), a highlight of this weekend. The suspense remained until the last lap. The victory was decided in the sprint and it was finally the S1neo Team Connect who won. The team from Angers achieved the triple after their titles in 2015 and 2016, defeated the teams Socopa 1 and L'oiseau Bleu-Shtp, and beat the record of distance travelled with 1021 km (244 laps against 240 in 2015). "This is the most beautiful of our three victories, because we had to fight until the end. To make the difference of the team Socopa 1, we made a change of riders during the last lap. Our objective: to allow François Pervis to take Julien Guay to the sprint!” commented Johanny Delmas, manager of S1neo, impressed. The race best lap record was beaten during the first hours of the race. Detained since 2011 by the Latvian Martin Trautmanis in 5min.14sec, Dany Maffeïs (Socopa 1) covered a lap in 5min.11sec with an impressive speed of 48 km / h.
