This achievement is thanks to a record-number of competitive cyclists who call themselves USA Cycling members, generous donations from friends, strong support from industry sponsors and partners, and incredible performances from our elite athletes in major international events across the globe. For the sixth consecutive year, all measureable aspects of competitive cycling on the domestic front have grown, making bike racing one of the most popular sports in America. In 2008, we welcomed more than 63,000 licensees, representing a vast network of athletes, coaches, officials and race promoters. Also, with more than 2,500 sanctioned events across the nation, cycling continued to be one of the most accessible forms of competition for athletes of all ages and abilities. And our nearly 2,200 member clubs and teams provided the structure and social environment coveted by our many constituents. Collectively, these numbers illustrate the stability of bike racing in America and demonstrate our future potential. In the world-class arena, USA Cycling enjoyed unprecedented success, winning 5 Olympic and 14 Paralympic medals in Beijing last August. Those successes were further complemented by 11 world championship medals from our elite athletes, as well as an additional 49 medal-winning performances by USA Cycling members at UCI Masters and amateur world championship events. And while our top athletes recorded great results internationally, the athletes representing the future of American cycling performed often and admirably as part of USA Cycling’s athlete development infrastructure. With more than 2,300 individual race days in Europe and the rest of the world, our national team athletes received the exposure and guidance necessary to advance their competitive cycling careers. The accomplishments of our young athletes demonstrate that our development pipeline is working and the future of American cycling is in good hands. In revisiting our stated mission – to achieve sustained success in international cycling competition and to grow competitive cycling in America – it’s clear that 2008 was a hallmark year in carrying out those objectives.
