CHAPTER 9 Herodotus’ Reputation in Latin Literature from Cicero to the 12th Century Félix Racine Introduction Herodotean scholarship has paid little attention to the reception of the Histories in the Latin West before the Renaissance. Arnaldo Momigliano’s sem- inal article “The Place of Herodotus in the History of Historiography”, to take a celebrated example, considers in turn ancient Greek views on Herodotus and those of Renaissance scholars, but has little to say on Latin opinions save those of Cicero.1 And why should it not be so? Few Western readers of Herodotus are known from the Imperial era, and virtually none from the Middle Ages. A closer look at the evidence reveals a more nuanced picture of the vicis- situdes of Herodotus’ name in the West, and of stories originally found in his Histories. Let us consider the 12th-century French scholar Peter Comestor (“The Voracious”, so named from the many books he avidly read), who wrote an exegetical and historical commentary on the Scriptures, the Historia Scholastica. Comestor’s source material was broad indeed—it included classi- cal and Christian authors (in Latin; he knew very little Greek) and his historical horizon embraced not only Sacred history but also classical Rome, Greece and Persia. Inserted between a discussion of the Book of Habakkuk and the end of the Babylonian Captivity is an account of Cyrus’ life focusing on his birth and childhood, much altered since its first telling by Herodotus. The Zodiac: Comparison of the Ancient Greek Mythology and the Popular Romanian Beliefs
THE ZODIAC: COMPARISON OF THE ANCIENT GREEK MYTHOLOGY AND THE POPULAR ROMANIAN BELIEFS DOINA IONESCU *, FLORA ROVITHIS ** , ELENI ROVITHIS-LIVANIOU *** Abstract : This paper intends to draw a comparison between the ancient Greek Mythology and the Romanian folk beliefs for the Zodiac. So, after giving general information for the Zodiac, each one of the 12 zodiac signs is described. Besides, information is given for a few astronomical subjects of special interest, together with Romanian people believe and the description of Greek myths concerning them. Thus, after a thorough examination it is realized that: a) The Greek mythology offers an explanation for the consecration of each Zodiac sign, and even if this seems hyperbolic in almost most of the cases it was a solution for things not easily understood at that time; b) All these passed to the Romanians and influenced them a lot firstly by the ancient Greeks who had built colonies in the present Romania coasts as well as via commerce, and later via the Romans, and c) The Romanian beliefs for the Zodiac is also connected to their deep Orthodox religious character, with some references also to their history. Finally, a general discussion is made and some agricultural and navigator suggestions connected to Pleiades and Hyades are referred, too. Keywords : Zodiac, Greek, mythology, tradition, religion. PROLOGUE One of their first thoughts, or questions asked, by the primitive people had possibly to do with sky and stars because, when during the night it was very dark, all these lights above had certainly arose their interest. So, many ancient civilizations observed the stars as well as their movements in the sky. -

Mihi blanditias dixit: the Puella as Poet in Amores 3.7 In Amores 3.7, Ovid describes the lover-poet in a difficult position: he has been unable to achieve an erection while trying sleep with a beautiful puella. The poem describes her repeated attempts to excite him and their mutual frustration at her lack of success, until she finally scolds him and walks away. I argue that Ovid describes the unnamed puella as a failed elegist in this poem, and that her failure is part of a broader pattern of disengagement from elegy in the third book of the Amores. Amores 3.7 has received relatively little scholarly attention, as only four articles focus on this poem. Baeza Angulo compares Amores 3.7 with other ancient literature on impotence (1989), Mauger-Plichon examines the poem alongside parts of the Satyrica and Maximianus 5 (1999), and Holzberg argues that Ovid almost breaches the propriety of elegiac diction in Amores 3.7 (2009). I build on Sharrock’s 1995 article, which presents a metapoetic reading of the poem: that Ovid blurs the line between sex and poetry in Amores 3.7, allowing the reader to interpret the lover-poet’s impotence not just as literal, but also as poetic. I focus on the puella’s role as a poet, rather than on the amator, and therefore also engage with Wyke’s (e.g. 1987) and James’ (2003) discussions of the elegiac mistress as a poetic fiction, as well as Keith’s examination of elegiac language used to describe Corinna in Amores 1.5 (1994). -

Social Memory in the Eclogues of Virgil and Calpurnius Siculus
“Now I have forgotten all my verses”: Social Memory in the Eclogues of Virgil and Calpurnius Siculus Paul Hulsenboom Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen Abstract This paper examines the use of social memory in the pastoral poetry of Virgil and Cal- purnius Siculus. A comparison of the references to Rome’s social memory in both these works points to a development of this phenomenon in Latin bucolic poetry. Whereas Vir- gil’s Eclogues express a genuine anxiety with the preservation of Rome’s ancient customs and traditions in times of political turbulence, Calpurnius Siculus’s poems address issues of a different kind with the use of references to social memory. Virgil’s shepherds see their pastoral community disseminating: they start forgetting their lays or misremem- bering verses, indicating the author’s concern with Rome’s social memory and, thereby, with the prosperity and stability of the Res Publica. Calpurnius Siculus, on the other hand, has his herdsmen strive for the emperor’s patronage and a literary career in the big city, bored as they are by the countryside. They desire a larger, more cohesive and active urban community in which they and their songs will receive the acclaim they deserve and consequently live on in Rome’s social memory. Calpurnius Siculus’s poems are, however, in contrast to Virgil’s, no longer concerned with social memory in itself. Abstract: The fifteen Ptolemies that sat on the throne of Egypt between 305 B.C. (the date of assumption of basileia by Ptolemy I) and 30 B.C. (death of Cleopatra VII) are in most cases little known and, even in its most recognised bibliography, their work has been somewhat overlooked, unappreciated. Although boisterous and sometimes unloved, with the tumultuous and dissolute lives, their unbridled and unrepressed ambitions, the intrigues, the betrayals, the fratricides and the crimes that the members of this dynasty encouraged and practiced, the Ptolemies changed the Egyptian life in some aspects and were responsible for the last Pharaonic monuments which were left us, some of them still considered true masterpieces of Egyptian greatness. The Ptolemaic Period was indeed a paradoxical moment in the History of ancient Egypt, as it was with a genetically foreign dynasty (traditions, language, religion and culture) that the country, with its capital in Alexandria, met a considerable economic prosperity, a significant political and military power and an intense intellectual activity, and finally became part of the world and Mediterranean culture. The fifteen Ptolemies that succeeded to the throne of Egypt between 305 B.C. (date of assumption of basileia by Ptolemy I) and 30 B.C. (death of Cleopatra VII), after Alexander’s death and the division of his empire, are, in most cases, very poorly understood by the public and even in the literature on the topic.
