Coming Events ...... 15 Our Neighborhood Group Leaders… Again, I can’t say enough about Advertising Rates ...... 16 the dedication they have towards making their groups “Glow.” Look at all

the pictures in our newsletter that show the members and their projects, charity work and beautiful sewing accomplishments. This re- flects from their leadership, generosity, devotion and love for sewing.

Again, Thank you so much.

As my 4-year term draws near and our new president, Faye Ariel, assumes the responsibility again, I am confident with her leadership the Fort Lauderdale Chapter will continue as an outstanding National chapter. It takes hard work to be an outstanding chapter and with the help of every member we will continue to grow. My only regret is we did not increase our membership substantially so that other ladies could enjoy our friend- ship and sewing times together.

Coming Events: Again, thank you to those who have worked hard and dedicated time to this wonderful organization to make it be the BEST!!! See page 15 for details of sewing events. Donna

North Palm Beach

At our August meeting Diane demoed a reversible girl’s dress. Some of us will be making these dresses for Harmony House. Diane and her dresses are pictured. Barbara shows a beautiful quilt she made. Our September meeting was cancelled due to the storm.

......

At the Group, Sharon showed the group various embossed embroidery designs at our August meeting. Jane Cappo ’s Ham Tip

Similar in size to a canned ham, this tailor’s tool can make the difference between home-made and hand-made. The stand- ard “ham” is made to reproduce nearly every curve on the human body. All curved seams such as darts, collars, cuffs, yokes, pockets and flaps that lie over curved areas of the body should be pressed. Once pressed the shape will retain that memory. Darts are an especially important aspect of pressing and the ham will help to follow the curve of the place- ment. Shaping collars, and cuffs not only make the job easier but adds to the professional look of the garment.

And don’t forget the tailor’s “sausage” for avoiding pressing marks along the seams.

Neighborhood Group News Port St. Lucie

For our August meeting we had our Charity Sewing for Ryan’s Cases for Smiles. We had 11 ladies sewing and ironing pillowcases. We had lots of fun and fellowship. Laura’s provided lunch for us hard-working ladies! We made a total of 52 pillowcases!!

In September, Lyn Marino demonstrated three different approaches to mitered corners. She did a fantastic presentation.

ASG Fabric Design Challenge

The winning design for the ASG Fabric Design Contest was a big hit at conference. Now we are moving into the second phase, and it’s open for all members to participate. Each member is challenged to produce sewn items fea- turing the winning fabric design. Entries may incorporate the coordinating designs or any other fabric, but the winning design must be featured. Pictures of each item will be submitted in the spring. Recognition will be given to both the individual submissions as well as chapters with the greatest participation. So get those creative juices flowing, snipping, and machines humming; and go to MyFabricDesigns.com (search for ASG) to get your fabric to get started. To get a limited 20% discount, use code: ASG20. Look for updated entry information later this fall.

Neighborhood Group Meetings Neighborhood meetings are great places to meet with new and old friends. All neighborhood groups are open to any member and guests. Guests may attend two meetings before joining the Guild. Bring and share your sewing projects. Ask for help with problems you may be having. Please call first when attending at private homes. Occasionally, it’s necessary for programs to change after the newsletter is printed. The latest information is at www.asgfl.org.

Your attendance at programs sponsored by the American Sewing Guild may be digitally recorded through photographs and/or video recordings. These images may be used on our website or in our newsletters. If you do not wish your image to be published, please notify the photographer or Group Leader. All members are welcome to attend the Chapter Board meetings. You need to contact any board member (see page 2) in advance to confirm time and location. We welcome member questions, comments and suggestions.

Broward County and Boca Raton Retailer News

Despite being without electricity, phones and internet and cancelled classes for one and a half weeks, thanks to Hur- ricane Irma, Sew Much Fun is back to normal. The “Try Our Sergers” class has been rescheduled to Saturday, Oc- tober 21, 10:00 AM to Noon, when you will make a simple kimono jacket and see how fabulous serging is! Call the store (561-999-9992) for more info and reservations – 3 spots are left.

Also based on the success with Camp Runway and the repeated request from adults who wanted their own camp they had planned our first Camp SMF during Irma. They now have re-scheduled it to Wednesday, October 11, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and Friday October 13, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Each camp will appeal to different levels of sewers and the first one is geared towards advanced beginners. They will have an information part (how to read/understand patterns) and a project to teach how to work with a specific fabric or machine foot, etc. This time they are making a cute, clear plastic bag with ribbon . Again, call the store for more info and reservations. Also stop by to see the new Brother sewing and embroidery machines and the great sale prices on the discontinued models!

Cynthia’s Fine Fabrics’ new schedule of events is available on the website. Peggy Sagers is among the guests and will be presenting an all-day event on January 19, 2018. Go to cynthiasfinefabrics.com for more information.
